Supports emerging as well as established scholars, writers and professionals wishing to engage in
independent study in Berlin. Around 24 Berlin Prizes are conferred annually. Prizes have been awarded
to scholars working in various disciplines, including history, political science, literature, economics, art
history, musicology, anthropology, law and linguistics. A stipend up to $5,000 per month. Is available.
Only U.S. candidates are eligible to apply. Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent by the time of
application.

Offers two types of grants in architecture and its role in the arts, culture, and society: Production and
Presentation Grants, and Research and Development Grants. These fund individuals in support of
production-related expenses necessary to take a project from conceptualization to realization and public

assist with production and presentation of significant programs about architecture and the designed

9. Program: Fellowships to Assist Research and Artistic Creation
Agency: John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation

Provides individual fellowships averaging $40,000 each to further the development of exceptional
scholars and professionals in all fields (natural and social sciences, humanities, and creative arts) but not
to performing artists. The foundation will provide fellowships to composers but not conductors, singers,
or instrumentalists; choreographers but not dancers; filmmakers, playwrights, and performance artists
who create their own work but not actors or theater directors. Scholars from the U.S. and Canada
should apply by 9/19 annually.

Supports institutional partnerships that contribute to developing and implementing digital
infrastructures and services for humanities research. Provides up to three years in the following areas:
innovative methods; digital research resources; ensuring sustainability of existing digital resources;
creating new digital modes of scholarly communication; and publishing and developing models and case
studies. Each application must be sponsored by at least one eligible German individual or institution,

13. Program: Digital Humanities Start-Up Grants

Supports planning or initial stages of digital initiatives in all areas of the humanities. Start-Up Grants may
involve: research that brings new digital approaches to the humanities; new digital modes of
publication; exploration of digital approaches to preserve, archive, and make accessible traditional and
"new media" resources in the humanities; planning new digital tools; and programs addressing emerging
digital technologies in education settings. Can choose between Level I awards of up to $30,000 and
Level II awards of up to $60,000.

NEH and NSF support projects to develop and advance knowledge concerning endangered human
languages. Project grants (up to three years) and fellowships (six-12 months) exploit advances in
information technology to address the imminent death of an estimated half of the 6,000 to 7,000
currently used human languages. Supports fieldwork and other activities relevant to recording,
documenting and archiving endangered languages.

15. Program: Enduring Questions
Agency: National Endowment for the Humanities

Provides support for new humanities courses at the undergraduate level. May be taught by faculty from
any field in the humanities or outside the humanities, provided that humanities sources are central to
course content. Courses must reflect intellectual pluralism; draw on readings from different periods.
Award of up to $38,000 depending on number of project directors. The new course must be taught at
least twice (requires administrator sign-off).

Provides $6,000 for two consecutive months (normally, but not always, in the summer) of full-time,
advanced research and writing that contributes to scholarly knowledge or to the public's understanding
of the humanities. Awards usually result in publications. All scholars, including university faculty and
staff, are eligible. Limited submission: campuses may nominate a maximum of two faculty members at
any level per competition. Recipients of fellowships of over $15,000 in the past three academic years are
not eligible.

Senior Fellowships (9/6/13) are awarded to professionals in the broad areas of international peace and
conflict management. Program is open to individuals with national or international stature in conflict
resolution and mid-career professionals. Senior Fellows work in residence at USIP in Washington, D.C.
