July 2012

This winter weather this year is really cold. Hope everyone is keeping warm.

Classes have been well attended, the training rooms are heated and there has been so many new things to learn. LOTS TO DO THIS MONTH!

Blacktown Community Services Conference was held on the 5 th of this month. This was a free event held at the Mount Druitt Hub, 9 Ayes Rock ,Mount Druitt. The day was about

Community Organisations and the services delivered to the community. There were a number of speakers, the Hon. Ed Husic, Federal MP for Chiefly, Dr Loucas Nicolaou from

FECCA and Catherine White from the WASH House.

The Treehouse Theatre gave a preview of their play “Tree of life”. It was written and performed by young refugees from western Sydney. The theme of the play was to share their joys, sorrows, terrors, relief and humour of the refugee experience with the broader community. It was a wonderful heart wrenching performance.

We visited the Kingswood Archives recently where we learnt historical information about the families of early settlers.

Kingswood Archives holds seminar presentations, information stalls and talks on various topics, such as convicts, colonial settlers, family histories, land records, law and disorder, local history, probate and deceased estate records.

Kingswood archives is located at 143 O'Connell Street,

Kingwood, open Mon-Fri 9am-5pm & Sat 10am-4pm (Closed

Sun & Public Holidays)

Mid July we attended a seminar on aged care reforms. The Hon. Mark Butler, Federal Minister for

Aging hosted the event.

The talks focused on the importance of elderly citizens residing in their own homes rather than nursing homes. Elderly people are often unwilling to be put into an aged care facility. The Hon. Ms

Rowland, Federal member for Greenway stated, “No one puts their hand up to go into a nursing home”.

I think we all believe that everyone deserves to stay at home if they are able to, provided they get the support to make it possible. The reforms will impact on individuals in different ways. Everyone was able to learn something from the detailed information given on the day. People were given lots of opportunities to ask questions and the answers were given in great detail.

Everyone found that at the end of the day they understood how the reforms might affect them and their families.
