3rd Quarter Biome Project Due: Tuesday, February 19th Using the following pages as resources, each student will create a biome project chosen from the list below. You will be working as individuals, no groups will be allowed. Choose the biome and project that interests you most. Once you have chosen your project you will receive a packet of information and resources to help you. Have fun! Be creative! This is just a starting point. You may also access online encyclopedias or the local library. Be sure to reference ALL sources you use! A template will be given to help you stay organized. http://mbgnet.mobot.org/sets/rforest/index.htm http://www.cotf.edu/ete/modules/msese/earthsysflr/rforest.html http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Laboratory/Biome/biorainforest.html http://www.blueplanetbiomes.org/world_biomes.htm http://www.teachersfirst.com/lessons/biomes/biomes.cfm http://www.worldbiomes.com/ http://kids.nceas.ucsb.edu/biomes/index.html http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/glossary/gloss5/biome/aquatic.html http://www.thewildclassroom.com/biomes/ http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Experiments/Biome/graphs.php#coniferous Biome Diorama Construct a 3-dimensional model of a biome in a large shoe box. Include on the inside: Plants that live in your biome (4) Animals that live in your biome (4) Terrain of your biome (Is it mountainous, flat, shoreline, etc.?) Abiotic and biotic factors unique to your biome Place on the back and sides: A world map showing the location of the biome (Be sure to color or outline the location of your biome on the map.) A graph or table with the temperature and precipitation A list of adaptations plants and animals must have to live in your biome. Relationships: 2 predator-prey and 2 competition All written information must be typed and attached to the diorama. Biome Brochure Congratulations! You have just landed your dream job: Travel Agent!!! The manager at the travel agency you work at has just given you your first assignment. All of their travel brochures are old and out-of-date. Your job is to redesign a brochure of your choice. Choose a biome and get to work! You may type up your brochure using Microsoft Publisher, Word, or any other word processing program of your choosing. Below is a sample of how to set up your brochure in Publisher. Good luck! Launch Microsoft Publisher Choose an Informational Brochure o Select 3 Panel page design o Select None for form Page 1 o Left Hand Column Place a map of your biome Shade in the areas of the world where travelers could go experience all your biome has to offer! o Middle Column Insert a Text Box for your WORKS CITED Include ALL sources of information, including graphics Use the bibliography worksheet as a guide Include your names Include your class period A graphic is optional o Right Hand Column Include a descriptive title (Ex. - The Rainforest - The Diverse Biome ) Describe your biome Location General characteristics A graphic is required Page 2 o Left Hand Column Describe the Physical / Abiotic features of the biome Temperature Precipitation Landforms Bodies of water o o A graphic is optional in this column, but there must be at least one graphic in one of the columns on page 2 Middle Column Describe the Living / Biotic factors of the biome Plants minimum of 4 Animals minimum of 4 Describe two examples of competition Describe two examples of a predator-prey relationship A graphic is optional in this column, but there must be at least one graphic in one of the columns on page 2 Right Hand Column Describe the adaptations of plants and animals that are needed to survive in the biome Give at least two examples of animal adaptations Give at least two examples of a plant adaptation A graphic is optional in this column, but there must be at least one graphic in one of the columns on page 2 Biome Scrapbook Create a scrapbook about your chosen biome. Decorate the cover based on your biome. Use pictures, examples, captions, and drawings to fill your pages. Your scrapbook should include at least 1 page of each of the following: Map with biome shaded Weather & Climate o Temperature o Precipitation Landforms o Mountains o Bodies of water o Canyons o Islands Animal species (4) o 2-3 adaptations animals need to survive in the biome Plant species (4) 2-3 adaptations plants need to survive in the biome Relationships o Predator-Prey (2) o Competition (2) Limiting Factors (see Chapter 1) o Biotic o Abiotic o Get creative and have fun!!!!!! Biome Paper Choose 2 biomes to write a compare/contrast essay. Your paper must have at least 5 paragraphs and include the following information: Attach a map with each biome shaded in different colors Weather & Climate o Temperature o Precipitation Landforms o Mountains o Bodies of water o Canyons o Islands Animal species (4) o 2-3 adaptations animals need to survive in the biome Plant species (4) o 2-3 adaptations plants need to survive in the biome Relationships o Predator-Prey (2) o Competition (2) Limiting Factors (see Chapter 1) o Biotic o Abiotic Papers must be typed, 12 pt. font, and double spaced. *HINT: To help you stay organized, create a Venn diagram for the 2 biomes you have chosen. Biome Poster Create a poster to inform people about your biome. Make sure to include the following information: Map with the biome shaded Weather & Climate o Temperature o Precipitation Landforms o Mountains o Bodies of water o Canyons o Islands Animal species (4) o 2-3 adaptations animals need to survive in the biome Plant species (4) o 2-3 adaptations plants need to survive in the biome Relationships o Predator-Prey (2) o Competition (2) Limiting Factors (see Chapter 1) o Biotic o Abiotic Make sure all the writing is clear and legible. Pictures and illustrations must be visible and colorful. Don’t make them too small! There is a lot of information you need to include, so think about how you will arrange everything before you glue it down. You can use a poster board or a tri-fold board to fit all the requirements. Biome Big Book Using the example we read in class as a guide, create a Big Book about your chosen biome. Your book should have at least 7 pages. Make your print large and your pictures big and colorful! Remember, this type of book is usually read to beginning readers. Your Big Book should have at least 1 page of each of the following: Map with biome shaded Weather & Climate o Temperature o Precipitation Landforms o Mountains o Bodies of water o Canyons o Islands Animal species (4) o 2-3 adaptations animals need to survive in the biome Plant species (4) o 2-3 adaptations plants need to survive in the biome Relationships o Predator-Prey (2) o Competition (2) Limiting Factors (see Chapter 1) o Biotic o Abiotic Get creative and have fun!!!!!!
