Bulldogs from the University of Redlands Will Unite in Service
Alumni and friends of the Southern California university will participate in community service
projects in the Orange County area April 9
REDLANDS, CA (April 1, 2011)—For University of Redlands Bulldogs, the spirit of service
doesn’t end after graduation. For the fourth year, University alumni, parents, students and friends
will join across the globe to give back to their communities, whether by cleaning up the beach,
planting gardens or building a home for those in need, during the annual Bulldogs in Service Day
on Saturday, April 9.
This year, Bulldogs will participate in 30 different projects across the country, from Washington
State to Washington D.C., in Texas, New York, Arizona, Oregon, Georgia, Rhode Island,
Hawai’i and in Salzburg, Austria. In California, alumni will be working at projects throughout
the Inland Empire, Los Angeles and San Diego counties and in the Bay Area.
University of Redlands alumni, parents and students are encouraged to sign up for the projects
and events in their area or, in the spirit of the day, engage in independent service in their own
community.
Service projects in the Orange County area this year include:

At the Fullerton Arboretum, a 26-acre plant collection and farm-to-fork teaching
garden, volunteers will assist in clearing an area for expansion of the farm system.
The Arboretum produces fresh vegetables for the Hart Community Homes, a local
non-profit organization founded by Redlands alumnus Bill Hart ’64 that houses
orphaned teen boys.

In Upper Newport Bay, volunteers will assist California Coastal Commission’s
Community-Based Restoration and Education program in restoring a viable
habitat for local wildlife. This project will give volunteers an opportunity to learn
about the rare and beautiful coastal wetlands.
The idea for an annual service day began in 2007 after a group of University alumni journeyed to
New Orleans to help with clean-up efforts after Hurricane Katrina.
A co-chair of this year's Bulldogs in Service day, Marcia Mehl ’65, says “It was such a valuable
experience, and one that acquainted alums across the generations. We began to think this would
be a great way for alums to get together in their local areas, help in their communities, and share
the spirit of community service that is part of the U of R experience. "
Last year, the event spurred some 500 Redlands alumni, students and friends to volunteer in their
communities at projects across the U.S.
The University of Redlands has repeatedly garnered national attention for its commitment to
community service, receiving the highest honor on the President’s Higher Education Community
Service Honor Roll in 2007, and being named to the honor roll, with distinction, each year since
the Honor Roll’s inception.
