Congratulations to Kathy Sansavera who was awarded a $500 grant from the Nordonia Hills Foundation for Accelerated Reader books. Ledgeview students and staff will celebrate Veteran’s Day on November 11. Students are creating art to welcome Veterans who will eat lunch in the cafeteria with students. This will be a red, white and blue day for students and staff. ATTITUDE Encourage a healthy attitude with Fuel Up To Play 60. Your children and our school can earn prizes by logging on to www.FuelUpToPlay60.com. Students engage in activities, pop quizzes and challenges to earn points and compete against other schools. This is a fun home activity for K-12 students. Eat healthy! Get active! Win big! COMMUNITY To protect our children against germs, our custodians are cleaning and disinfecting the building every day and we encourage students to wash hands or sanitize hands frequently. We receive flu updates from Summit County Health Department almost daily and follow their guidelines. Check out the district web page for more information on H1N1 @ www.nordoniaschools.org. We welcome River Valley Paper Recycling to our school. This new company accepts cardboard and phone books along with all the paper we have collected over the years. Please drop your recyclables in either of the two bins at LV. All proceeds support the LV Library. The library also needs 1 gallon zipper bags for students to carry library books to and from school. These bags protect student library books. Please consider donating a box to the library. Please save Project A+ labels from bags and boxes of Tyson products. We have received over $100.00 for library books during the last 3 years from these labels. We are collecting Campbell’s barcodes from labels that are marked with either 1 point or 5 points. On bottle items, the points are on the caps. These points help us purchase technology. For a complete list of items to save check out www.labelsforeducation.com. Cuyahoga Valley Career Center… Making Career Connections Cuyahoga Valley Career Center’s K-12 Career Development Program, in cooperation with our school district, is looking for people to share their career experiences with students. Students are more motivated when they understand why learning is necessary—when it is relevant to their lives and their futures. With your help, CVCC helps students make real world connections between classroom learning and future career choices. You can volunteer to be a guest speaker in the classroom. Many jobs incorporate skills that your child is learning in school. Math, writing and reading skills are important in all careers. Science is used not only in medical fields, but in factories, veterinarian offices, hair salons, police/detective work and other work environments. Your experience is valuable! To volunteer to be a speaker at Ledgeview or in another school in Nordonia, send an email to Tish O’Dell, Elementary Career Specialist, at todell@cvccworks. For more information, contact CVCC at www.cvccworks.com . LV School Newsletter September 2009 Page 3 of 4 Ledgeview is committed to EXCELLENCE! Meet Our Co-Curricular Teachers Elementary music is an active, music-making experience for all children based on Ohio’s Content Standards for Music. In Miss Piekarski’s classes, kindergarten students have been learning about beat with poetry, songs and recorded music. The beat is the steady pulse in music and students express it by patting hands, marching, movements, and playing percussion instruments. Kindergarten students also learned to echo sing with children’s songs. Mrs. Thompson’s first grade students have been practicing beat and singing skills and will begin learning the concept of rhythm. First grade students sing songs to develop their skills, including Cookie Jar, Charlie Over the Ocean, Snail, Here Comes a Blue Bird, Miss White, and There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly. Second grade students reviewed beat, rhythm, ta (quarter note), ti-ti (eighth notes), tarest, the pitches so and mi, echo singing, and playing xylophones and other percussion instruments. They are learning about the pitch la. Some of their favorite songs include Bill Grogan’s Goat, Bow Wow Wow, Come Back Home My Little Chicks, We Are Dancing in the Forest, Snail, Hot Cross Buns, Naughty Kitty Cat, Skin & Bones and The Ghost of John. They also learned about The Sorcerer’s Apprentice by Paul Dukas. Third grade students are very anxious to begin playing recorders and will need their recorders every music day in third and fourth grades! Students developed singing and rhythmic movement skills with folk songs John Kanaka, The Bear Song, Scotland’s Burning, and The Ghost of John. Students discussed pioneer life in Ohio while learning Great Big House. (Hale Farm is a great place to learn about early life in Ohio!) Students learned about time signature including bar lines, measures, and a double bar line. Fourth grade students reviewed eight rhythm symbols and the pitches in the pentatonic scale (do-re-mi-so-la-high do). They learned two new rhythm symbols, one single eighth note (ti) and the whole note. Students practiced ti while learning Shaker folk song, Simple Gifts and learned a new song that included whole notes, Sioux Indian Lullaby. Students learned about the life and music of American composer, Aaron Copland. Please save Thursday evening, December 17 to attend the Fourth Grade Winter Music Concert at Nordonia High School at 7:00 p.m. If you have questions about music, please contact Mrs. Thompson @ Toby.Thompson@nordoniaschools Elementary Art teacher, Mrs. Angie Stone, reports that students in first grade have been studying color by identifying the primary and secondary colors as well as the warm and cool colors. They combined knowledge of color with a study of texture and space by creating painted rubbings of leaves. Next is a stud of germs and how to avoid getting them by taking good care of our bodies and washing our hands regularly. Students will use colored paper and shape scissors to create their own version of Jimmy Germ. Second grade students have also been studying color and texture combined with overlapping spaces and positive/negative shapes. The next project will be to create symmetrically torn paper shapes that will become funny faces embellished with black printed textures. Third grade has been using their knowledge of color and texture to create warm and cool patterned papers which are cut into leaf shapes and combined with additional textures to create a vivid fall foliage collage. The next project will be the study of French artist, Henri Rousseau and his wonderfully colored jungle paintings. Fourth grade has been looking at the archipelago of Indonesia and the local art of Batik. Students are applying crayon resist to fabric before dying it. Next, they will be using oil pastel to create portraits of cool cats and hot dogs. Please remember to provide an old shirt to serve as a cover-up for your child’s clothing in art class. Students have fun exploring a variety of materials! Miss Piekarski Mrs. Thompson Individual student learning and achievement is our core business. Mrs. Stone Grade 1 Grade 2 Grade 3 Grade 4 In Miss Blask’s Physical Education classes, students are practicing movement concepts and applying them to the motor skill activities. They have also been learning about healthy life styles, cooperative learning, and working with peers of all abilities. First and second graders have been working on various ways of throwing including: underhand roll, underhand toss, and overhand throw. They are practicing throwing the ball to various targets while stepping with the opposite foot. Students are learning how force impacts speed and distance. In addition, the children are practicing ball handling skills such as dribbling, passing, bouncing and catching. Third and fourth graders will be reviewing throwing and catching. While using a football they will practice throwing a lead pass to a receiver. Throwing a lead pass requires the correct amount of force in the throw and timing the arrival. Students will then be involved in a short basketball unit to practice correct shooting form, boxing out and the triple threat. Students practice with varying hoop heights. Students apply all their skills during one-on-one basketball games with their small group. In November, all students in grades 1-4 will start the tumbling unit. After reviewing tumbling skills, each child will design a routine with starting and ending poses as well as balances and rotational moves. Website Recommendations .
