Remembrance Day Poster, Literature and Video Contest Last year Gordon Graydon Sr PS had several students participate in the annual Royal Canadian Legion Remembrance Day poster and literature contest. This was a great opportunity for students to participate in the act of remembrance, showcase their talent and earn house points. Several students from GGSPS placed in the top 3 for Legion Zone and earned prize money. This year GGSPS will be participating in the contest again. This time a video category has also been included fpr Grade 7 and 8 students. Students must submit their entries to the office by November 1st, 2013. Details are below: Contest in General Each entry will earn 10 house points. The school will judge who they feel is 1st, 2nd and 3rd place to award 50, 100 and 150 house points respectively. All submissions will be sent to the Legion for their contest. Contestants are challenged to exercise their creativity and create a poster, video or write an essay and/or poem on Remembrance. This is a contest to select the most suitable posters, essays and poems submitted by students in the Canadian school system. The posters, essays and poems will be judged at the local Branch and then at the Provincial level. The Provincial winners in the Junior, Intermediate and Senior categories will then be submitted to Ottawa for judging at the National level. The videos will be judged at the provincial level. A plaque will be awarded to the 1st place winner in each category, and to the 1st place winners’ schools. Prizes will be awarded on the recommendation of the judges, whose decision will be final. Prizes exist at different levels of Royal Canadian Legion Organization. Literacy (Essay and Poetry) Contest Regulations 1. All entries to be submitted to the local Legion branch. 2. This contest is open to all students in the Canadian school system. 3. Entries may be submitted in either English or French. 4. Entries will be marked on the basis of originality of thought, expression, presentation, grammar, spelling and Canadian content. 5. Candidates must complete an official Registration Form, available from the local Legion branch or on line at www.Legion.ca, and attach it to their entry (no staples please). 6. Candidates will use only one side of the page. 7. Entries must not exceed the word or line limit. 8. Contestants may enter both the essay Contest and the Poetry Contest, but may submit only one entry for each category. 9. Students who have been out of the educational system for more than two consecutive years are ineligible to compete in the Literary Contest at any level. Literacy (Essay and Poetry) Grand Prizes for Grades 7 and 8 (National Level) Candidates will submit a composition in prose of not more than 500 words or a poem of not more than 32 lines. 1ST Prize $ 500.00 2ND Prize $ 250.00 Literacy (Essay and Poetry) Prizes for Grades 6 (National Level) Candidates will submit a composition in prose of not more than 350 words or a poem of not more than 32 lines. 1ST Prize $ 250.00 2ND Prize $ 200.00 Poster Contest Regulations 1. All entries to be submitted to the local Legion branch. 2. Entries will be no larger than 56 cm x 71 cm. 3. Please use only the following for the contest entered: Colour poster: Full colour Black and White: Pencil, charcoal and/or India Ink 4. Entries will be judged on originality, expression of designated subject, drawing and illustration. Computer generated entries will not be accepted. 5. The poster shall reflect REMEMBRANCE with a Canadian theme. If symbols are used, Canadian symbols such as Canadian and provincial flags, coats of arms, and representative flowers, birds or animals, as well as all forms of Canadian historical and current military dress shall be pre-eminent. 6. Contestants may enter both the Colour and the Black and White, but may submit only one entry for each. 7. Candidates must complete an official Registration Form, available from the local Legion branch or on line at Legion.ca, and attach it to their entry (no staples please). 8. National 1st place posters will be displayed at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa for one year. 2nd and 3rd place national winners will be displayed at Parliament Hill during Remembrance week. All artwork will be returned to the artists through Provincial Commands. 9. Video contests include Video 1 - Individual Entry & Video 2 - Group Entry 2. Entries will be between 3-4 minutes in length (including credits). 3. Video 1 (V1) submissions will only be accepted as an individual entry. No joint or group efforts from students within Grades 7 to 12. 4. All video submissions will be judged on originality, research, emotion, inter-generational message, quality, etc. The top 5 video scores may also be based on the number of “Likes” on your YouTube video during the final judging process. 5. All videos will be judged at Ontario Command level only. The first, second and runner up videos in each video category will be awarded prizes and posted on the Ontario Command website for a period of one year. 6. Students may enter both the Video 1 (V1) and Video 2 (V2) categories but may only submit one entry per contest. The Group Entry must have every participating student’s information, signature and parental consent. 7. Students who have been out of the educational system for more than two consecutive years are ineligible to compete in either Video Contest.
