SAMPLE LETTER TO PRESENT TO YOUR CONGRESSMAN Dear Congressman, I was in complete shock when the recent mandate came down from Kathleen Sebelius, the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, and which was advocated for by President Barack Obama. The more I have learned about this mandate, the angrier I become. The mandate goes against basic American values: freedom of religion and freedom to act on one’s conscience. The mandate is an extreme overreach by the federal government and infringes on my liberty to practice my religion and act according to my conscience. With this in mind, I respectfully ask that you vote for, advocate for and even endorse a very important bill, HR 1179 the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act. This bill will insure my freedoms as an American, and my right to not be coerced into paying for something that I deem immoral. This mandate is not about women’s rights. It’s not even about abortion or contraception. It’s about forcing Americans to violate their faith and conscience in order to obey the state. This mandate represents one of the largest intrusions on individual and religious freedom in American history, and it sets a dangerous precedent. Never before has the federal government attempted to force the American people to buy products that blatantly violate their own personal beliefs or religious views. If the president has the authority to violate our constitutional rights in this way, what else can he and his administration do? This time President Obama is targeting Catholics and pro-lifers, but next time he could target a group that you or I belong to. If this mandate stands, the limit on government power in our lives will be infinite. Thank you for taking the time to hear my voice. This topic is one of the most important issues facing our nation and my generation right now. I hope I can count on you to vote yes when the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act comes to the floor. I eagerly await your reply. Respectfully,
