FIRST DAY CHECKLIST FOR PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE SUPERVISORS Getting to Know the Student(s) ☐ Welcome Introduce yourself and explain the plan for the placement (some students may be doing different units) ☐ Icebreaker activity Introduce yourself to the students and the students to each other. For example, background of work experience and previous placements, when they had their last placement ☐ Gather information Ask the students about their previous experience, expectations, goals and objectives for the placement ☐ Learning styles Enquire as to the students preferred learning styles. For example, are your students visual, auditory or kinaesthetic learners? Professional Expectations ☐ Roles and Responsibilities Explore the student’s expectations of you and clarify your expectations of them as students ☐ Discipline competencies Review and relate the discipline specific competencies to the placement and performance expectations, discuss examples ☐ Objectives Discuss the objectives for the placement: provide examples and encourage the students to have their own objectives ☐ University requirements Highlight the minimal performance requirements for the placement – assessment and evaluations ☐ Feedback Explore the student preferences for feedback. Explain that you will give regular feedback both formal and informal. Explain what you expect in terms of preparation, participation and follow up. Remind students that you will ask the staff for feedback on their performance ☐ Sick leave Remind students about the policy around making up sick leave (only on the final placement) share contact numbers, what is the process for notifying you? Clarify assessment and minimum rating required to pass and number of attempts allowed. ☐ Professional issues Professional Body requirements (Eg.
