Organizing and founding
AMATERAS FOUNDATION
AMATERAS Foundation presents for the fifth time Sofia Paper Art Fest in the period
7 May -6 June 2015. AMATERAS is the name of the Japanese goddess of the sun
and in this respect the Foundation symbolically connects the opening of the annual
editions of the festival with the rising of light and hope and with the belief that they
will just be able to save us from the machine to the daily grind.
The first panel of the Festival was in March in Japan - Fukuoka city, in the heart of
Japan. The festival was invited to present the project NEXUS, organized by a group
of artists from Japan and Korea, with the aim of intercultural dialogue - Europe-Asia.
The festival presented works, which have participated in previous editions, in the City
Museum Fukuoka from various sections. The two presentations made by the director
Todor Todorov and the curator Daniela Todorova of Sofia Paper Art Fest, presented
the overall trend for innovation from previous years as well as international policy and
aims of the Foundation. Exchanging exhibitions are foreseen for the period 2016 2018 in both countries.
Choosing this year's festival to start with a debut in Japan is not random and the
festival traditionally will have exhibitions for Japanese paper in art gallery Mazda. In
the programme of the the Gallery, we will be able to see events related to ancient
Japanese paper arts as Kiri-e, origami, calligraphy, ikebana art, and on 27 May there
will be a presentation on different paper techniques of the Far East.
This year's edition will present 152 visual artists from 32 countries in both sections for
professional authors. The largest of them - the Biennial of art paper mainly aims to
show this year, works on topical themes to the urban environment, new technologies,
the spiritual processes in modern society, the missing link of man and the universe,
inspired by civilization and its problems. The Biennial is for high achievements in
large format works and this year will be mainly presented in two main locations Vivacom Art Hall and the Museum of History in Sofia.
This year the motto is SHARE innovation, which draws the audience's attention on
the most important element of the festival - INNOVATION.SPACE.CITY discussion
that draws attention to the new global processes that have their own way. Guest of
the discussion will be the General Secretary of the European Festivals Association
Kathrin Deventer and Lorenzo Paolo - a lecturer specialized in global innovation.
The annual international exhibition contest AMATERAS small format is the precursor
of SPAF and traditionally will be presented in Gallery Art Alley, where on May 7 will
be announced at the awards by the international jury. Each year the contest presents
young artists and famous international artists in the neat city gallery in the heart of
Sofia.
Section Paper Art Academy will introduce students from all disciplines of the
academy and some of the disciplines of the National Academy. The two main
locations are SERDIKA Gallery and the Gallery of the Faculty of Applied Art
Academy. In the Night of Museums and Galleries will be presented interesting works
of specialty Textiles.
In the section on theater we will see again selected performances in the context of
the idea PAPER - from the Central Puppet Theatre, Theatre Academy and Theatre
199. In the accompanying event the central place will be occupied by the discussion
for INNOVATION. SPACE.CITY and the PAPER STREET in the NIGHT OF
MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES.

GRAND OPENING
BIENNIAL - exhibition "WORLD PAPER ART" Vivacom Art Hall - 7 May to 23 May - 18.00 hours
"PAPER WORLD ART I" is the first exhibition of the largest and elite section of Sofia
Paper Art Fest - Biennial art paper.
In 2011 and 2013 was held the first and the second edition of the Biennial for art
paper, within which were represented mainly visual arts. The Biennial aims at
reviewing the various developments in the paper art and presents artists from around
the world with works in various techniques, themes, styles and concepts. The
previous editions made a strong impression on the audience and the expectation this
year are reasonably large again.
The organizers will present an intriguing and comprehensive collection of nearly 100
artists from 30 countries, with which this year’s edition shows a selection of young
and established artists, mostly members of IAPMA / The International Association of
Hand Papermakers and Paper Artists /. For many years AMATERAS foundation is in
partnership with IAPMA and annually presents the achievements of Sofia Paper Art
Fest, which is the only multidisciplinary festival for art paper and attracts more
prominent world authors. In this year's Biennial will be presented new countries that
have not participated in 2011 and 2013. There will be representatives of countries
such as Colombia, Peru, Namibia and Laos, which were first presented by authors
born or working in these countries.
The exposure in Vivacom Art Hall will present artists from Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin
and North America, which are selected according to the space of the hall and the
necessary requirements for presenting some of the exhibits - environment, lighting
and space. The exhibition will bring the spirit of the exquisite sense of simplicity,
symbolism, high technology related to industrial papers, but there are works of fine
hand papers that stand out brilliantly in modern plants bordering the design and
elegant works of abstract character, which in turn will contrast some works executed
in the traditions of ancient Eastern technology handmade paper, but emphasized
created in contemporary sensibility.
Some authors in an elegant way are distinguished by their fine, verging on design,
aesthetics, unusual in their culture, while others represent objects loaded with deep
emotional context of their culture. In the exhibition will be presented video project of
two artists, which is a rare trend in the world of art paper.
It is not by chance the place AMATERAS foundation committed to this exposure Vivacom Art Hall is a place to create special artistic events with unusual character
and with a particular focus on the accompanying events, discussions and
presentations. In the programme of Vivacom Art Hall, the festival has prepared
several presentations. On May 8 there will be a special presentation by Viviane
Fontaine of IAPMA techniques and design solutions associated with modern urban
life INNOVATION. SPACE. CITY discussion on 15 May will be an important forum for
discussion of various audiences of contemporary society and professional circles in
Sofia in partnership with the Association for Development of Sofia, EFA - Brussels,
BFA, Innovation - Italy, transformers and other. The discussion will focus on the
festivals as a mediator of Innovation and there will be an emphasis on theory
ELEMENTAL SCULPTURE as an important factor in creating a sculptureenvironment and sculpture-object, giving a meaning of new spaces in urban and
suburban environments.
The programme includes film screenings and theatrical trailers, documentary footage
of previous editions and selected movies in sections cinema and theater, which will
be shown in the projection in (Saturday) 9 May at 20.00
An interesting and unique genre in paper art is ART BOOK / or the art of book / which
is rare and shows unique creative solutions through unusual books. The curator of
the Biennial for Art BOOK Doroteya Face will present trends and styles in this art.
In the whole period you will be able to see presentations of calligraphy, which will be
part of the events of the Paper Street in the Night of Museums and Galleries.
The list of authors includes names like Roxana Ramos, Helene Tschacherq Joachim
Tschacher, Irene Rammenzee, Rika Nel, Bill Pangburn, Renee Magnanti, Jeannine
De Raeymaecker, Snezhana Simeonova, Aris Stoidis and many others. It is they who
make exposure especially impressive and intriguing.

ART ALLEY
May 7 to June 6 - 20.00 hours
AMATERAS - The annual exhibition and competition for small format paper art.
The annual exhibition-contest for paper art small format is the original cause for
creating Sofia Paper Art Fest in 2011. It is the largest project of AMATERAS
foundation in the country, and throughout Europe, connected with art paper. This
makes it an important part of the cultural strategy of Sofia 2013 - 2023. Many of the
authors, who will be presented are favorites of Art Alley and will participate in the
Biennial for Paper Art.
From May 7 to June 6, 2013 for the seventh consecutive time AMATERAS
Foundation organizes annual exhibition-contest for paper art small format. For seven
years, the Foundation together with the ART ALLEY have presented to the Bulgarian
audience more than 600 authors from 37 countries with the unique by nature works
of art created from paper.
In the fifth, anniversary year of the establishment of Sofia Paper Art Fest, traditionally
the participants' exposure of their work will happen in the cozy and full of artistic spirit
Capital gallery ART ALLEY - constant partner of the project. In this day festival will
begin with the opening of the Biennial in Vivacom Art Hall, but the most intriguing
news - the announcement of the awards falls on Art Alley Gallery.
Competiting for the prizes are artists from Germany, Scotland, Japan, Switzerland,
Norway and for the first time in the nominations there is so great Bulgarian
presentation. With each passing year the interest is growing among young artists
from Bulgaria and foreign authors who are admirers of non-standard solutions and
are inclined to experiment. Normally, the international jury is of renowned authors
from the World Association of artists working with paper and this fact contributes to
the fair decision of the jury. Often the chosen works are with high quality hand paper
with clear and pure concept, but sometimes works that border with designs solutions
and fine minimalist vision are selected.
This year the competition for the grand prize is between three authors who have
proven in many international forums their achievements and the final decision will
show which of the works most closely fits in this year concept - Share Innovation.
Art Alley Gallery is an emblematic place for Sofia and it is a real oasis for art in the
heart of Sofia. The beautiful old house, gathering in history and present, will surround
you with the spirit of the magnetic power of art and the unique spirit of spirituality and
culture supported over the years by its creators - the gallerist Svetlana Ganeva and
the curator Stefan Popov. Thanks to the cooperation of the Gallery and Amateras
Foundation, this exhibition for the seventh time will excite citizens of the capital, and
this tradition is rare in the cultural life of Sofia.
All who want to know the secrets of the small paper forms with big ideas and
unlimited possibilities, we expect you on Gladstone Str. 51-A from 7 May to 6 June
2015, ART ALLEY Gallery.
THE ART OF THE BOOK
ART BOOK
Museum of History of Sofia / the bathroom / - 8 May to 24 May - 18.30
An exhibition which has a special place in the Biennial of Paper Art. ART BOOK or
the art of book is a collector’s section inspiring a number of authors for special
projects. This exhibition shows a selection of unique rare works, which are often
created by world works or poems, but there are those that have no words - they are
images, gently fluttering pages bringing the memory of the plants from which the
paper was created or scrolls with secret messages created by their authors sharing
their innermost thoughts.
In the past the books have been an invaluable and very expensive gift for every ruler.
Creating a book was expensive and complicated exercise, kept in special libraries
and personal archives of castles, palaces and monasteries. There are brilliant
examples in all the world's libraries and this gives the base of the current course,
which has developed over the last 50 years as an elite art, designed for collectors.
The exhibition at the Museum of History of Sofia will be situated in an unusual and
very impressive space that will remind with its domed space of many of the ancient
temple libraries and repositories of priceless manuscripts. The curator of Sofia Paper
Art Fest not by chance has selected exactly this space, laden with history and fine
sense of space, whose dome symbolizes the sky and the exposure of over 80 objects
is like descended heavenly messages presenting the viewer secret messages. For
the modern human is hard to imagine how difficult it is to create a book and how
much art is incorporated in it. In the modern art this section is preferred by visual
artists who are admirers of abstract, reaching the design decision in expression in the
pictures, but there are authors with passion for ancient scrolls
Around the world there are many prestigious forums, specializing in ART BOOK,
where collectors and connoisseurs of avant-garde works find wonderful exhibits
adorning their personal collections. The program of Sofia Paper Art Fest there will be
a special presentation by the German curator Dorothea Face, who organizes World
Biennial of this art.
In the exhibition ART BOOK the presented works are a small sample of the variety of
ideas and creative solutions. Much of the authors are members of the World
Association of authors working paper (IAPMA). Here it is appropriate to mention the
world famous names like Laura Behar, Jan Fairbairn Edwards, Gerlinde Hofmann,
Alejandra Koreck, Laura Dimitrova, Viviane Fontaine, Kristina Yakimova, Tzveta
Petrova, Krasimira Drenska, Aris Stoidis, Maria Diduch, France Baake, Ravikumar
Kashi, Asa Bostrom, Baj Strobel and many others.
Very often, these books come out the standard notions of the book as such, because
they inherently are more close to the sculpture, and even we can classify them to a
different manifestation of the new spatial forms, woven from images. Many of them
are combined in a collage of photography, drawing, poetry or just thrown thoughts.
Some are silent, filled with the silence of the beautiful delicate images vividly telling
the story.
The exhibition ART BOOK can be seen at the Museum of History of Sofia within
Sofia Paper Art Fest 2015 from 8 May to 22 May.
"WORLD PAPER ART II"
Museum of the History of Sofia / the bathroom / 8may - 24may-opening 18.30
In 2015 SOFIA PAPER ART FEST presents the largest section Biennial for large size
works in two main locations. Especially interesting is the space of the Museum of
History in Sofia / the bathroom /, which has historical value in the heart of Sofia and
wonderful space uniting the memory of the city and its cultural layers with the new
face of the city.
This years’ motto SHARE INNOVATION provoked mainly authors working on
experimental works, the challenge of civilization and its achievements in industrial
papers and many of the works are surprising with their messages, size, techniques
and overall concept. In the previous editions there were dominating works from hand
papers and now the audience will see a new approach to this art, placing the
problems of the individuality in society in historical and contemporary plan. Many of
the works bring element of its own culture and its heritage, but refracted through the
personal credo of the authors.
We are pleased by the fact that there are representatives of interesting new countries
who haven’t been introduced in Bulgaria such as Peru, Bogota, Laos, Namibia and
others. The most important aspect of the event Sofia Paper Art Fest is the
intercultural dialogue, which is produced by art, inviolable territory of humanism and
spirituality.
Historically the paper has been associated with the Far East, but in recent decades
the European culture, art and printing were major consumers of west and north
European paper. It has developed design and book printing, industries related to
interior and decoration technology. The contemporary paper art is like litmus for
processes in societies in different parts of the world. Innovations often appear in
places where there is no tradition of paper and then the free creative spirit creates
unexpected works. The third in a row Biennial in Sofia Paper Art Fest has different
goals and intentions of the previous editions and that can be read in a number of
works that local residents will be able to see.
The programme has set events to show traditional arts and techniques, which are not
shown in the works of the Biennial, but some of them, are based on new techniques
and abstract installations or sculptures. The spaces that the Biennial will occupy are
also non-standard coming out of the halls, permeating through the lobbies and the
galleries and reaching the hall with the domes. The overall project will be able to
show the possibilities and imagination of artists from around the world. In the
museum there will be not by chance a concentration of Bulgarian authors who
present themselves with impressive and very unusual works. Over the years, many
artists were attracted by the magnetic paper art and in it they found the warmth and
magic of this very easygoing and soft material.
Among authors we
Grotmol, Josephine
Stoeva, Tzvetislava
Josephine Tabbert,
others.
can mention Winsome Jobling, Hanne Frey Husoe, Kirsty
Temine, Laura Behar, Archie Granot, Anna Boyadjieva, Mila
Koleva, Galina Dokova , Michaela Padeva, Vladimirr Palev,
Monica Mazurkiewicz, Viktor Petkov, Priscilla Robinson, and
Opening on 8 May 2015. Museum of History of Sofia at 18.30.
JAPANESE INNOVATION
Gallery MAZDA - May 11 to June 6 - 19.30ch
Demonstration by Kihachiro Nishiura
Naturally MAZDA Gallery will present an exhibition JAPANESE INNOVATION during
Sofia Paper Art Fest 2015. This is happening for the fifth time together with Amateras
Foundation and we can easily say that it has become a tradition. This year, the fans
of the Japanese art and culture will be able to enjoy the works of the typical black
and white aesthetics of Japanese calligraphy tradition, supported by interesting and
unfamiliar techniques inspired by other Eastern techniques on paper, but served in
an innovative way. Minimalism, clear vision and symbolism, so characteristic for
Japan, this time will perform space gallery Mazda, which is prettily situated at the foot
of Lozenets and surrounded by the park space to the City Center. The partnership
between Gallery Mazda and Sofia Paper Art Fest will again show a new trend in
business development as a partner of culture.
In Japan, this is a very important element of the culture in the areas to which people
can easily reach without going to a museum specially. Annual exhibitions always
present interesting solutions and works by contemporary artists who transcend
tradition and create innovative works without fear of infringing traditions.
The installation of Kihachiro Nishiura is a real gem in the Japanese paper art
exhibition where calligraphy is presented in unusual approach and some of the works
associated with Buddhist symbolism. The particular impression of her works is
achieved by perfect perfection so characteristic for Japan, which Naoyo Yamamoto
presented in elegant, very poetic works, flowing in deep muted blue, characteristic for
the culture of Japan. Along with them, the avant-garde works of Fukiko Nakabayashi,
who with the unusual decision as a sculptor creates reliefs of paper with
extraordinary graphite technique, typical of Japanese tradition, but assimilating the
sense of mask brush sparkling whiteness in contrast with black, graphite gray and
dark blue muted, which create a sense of strength and softness at the same time.
And along with them, fine delicate works of Atsumi Murata, who always shines with
her fine taste and softness of hand paper, complements the collection of Japanese
works. Unique in their splendor are both unique panels of handmade paper of Atsumi
Murata. They carry the energy of the moment, concentration printed on white paper
"UASHI". Such an exposure, of course, can not show at least a few works of Yoshio
Hasegawa, who is a brilliant innovator shocking the audiences every time with his
unique works as if created by a magician.
It is no coincidence that precisely gallery Mazda is patron of elegance, beauty, art
and refinement, and that there will be presented unique exhibition Japanese Paper
Art - a real jewel in the crown of Sofia Paper Art Fest 2015.
In the programme of the festival there are evening events presenting Japanese
traditional arts, which today have undergone great development and the school for
ikebana “SOGA” is specially selected to show innovation in Ikebana.
You can see several evening events in Mazda Gallery. On May 22 / Friday / at 20.00
you will see TEA - PHILOSOPHY AND TRADITION, on 26 May / Tuesday / at 20.00
PAPER techniques from Japan - presentation and demonstration, and on 28 May /
Thursday / from 19.00 MODERN Ikebana - School “SOGA” - presentation and
demonstration.
Traditionally the exhibition will be officially opened by His Excellency Takashi
Koizumi, the Japanese Ambassador in Bulgaria.
You can visit it from Monday to Saturday during the period from May 11 to June 6,
2015.
The opening is on May 11, 2015 (Monday) at 19.30.

Love, Creativity, Inspiration, Beauty...
This is the motto under which the National Academy of Art will present two

a tradition in the program of the festival, which has a special ambition to present
young artists along with prominent artists in its editions and to support the debuting
talents in the intercultural dialogue.
In the building of the Faculty of Applied Academy, there are often brilliant exhibitions
which are not always visible for the citizens of the capital and therefore Sofia Paper
Art Fest specially invites its fans to see this exhibition, bringing the freedom in the big
sized works which can be proudly presented in a number of world forums. The
lecturers together with their students carefully prepare these projects and that which
is most inspiring in Sofia Paper Art Fest is the freedom to work with light, lightness,
grace, love and refinement. The gallery space allows interesting spatial installation
solutions to be unleashed, woven from different paper structures.

"THE OTHER FACES OF THE PAPER II"
Gallery SERDIKA
May 12 to May 30 - 19.00
The diverse forms of life, which the paper has in the everyday life are known to
everyone, but we can be surprised when we see the real works of art made by paper.
The paper is a material combining a numerous functions of application, but it is also a
material loaded with deep symbolism. This gives the opportunity for the paper to be
treated polyvalent - as a material and as a spiritual message. The challenge is great
in the different formats, techniques and the wide range of realizations shown by NAA
within the SOFIA PAPER ART FEST. For the second time students from all
disciplines of the National Academy (NAA) will participate, and lecturers together with
their students, within the overall exposure.
This year we will see in two exposure points works of young and talented artists.
Serdica Gallery is a new space in the cultural life of Sofia, situated in the old part of
the city, the famous Central Market and is very cozy and inspiring place for daytime
and evening events. The new Gallery welcomes Sofia Paper Art Fest with its section
Paper Art Academy and stimulates young artists welcoming them in its space. The
young artists will be presented at the Night of Museums and Galleries with interesting
program in SERDIKA Gallery.
The audience’s expectations are high after previous participation of students and
lecturer in the editions of Sofia Paper Art Fest. They have always wore the spirit of
experiment, innovation, pursuit of advanced solutions in the space and the desire of
the team of the Academy is to present interesting costumes made of paper by the
majors Fashion and Scenography.
This will surely excite the local residents and fans of avant-garde and innovative
solutions, bold sweep in forms and ideas.
In the exhibition can be seen works in which paper is turned into exquisite designer
items, jewelry, small sculptures and abstract panels. Fine jewelry editions will fit
perfectly into the filled with light space of Serdica Gallery, with which the presentation

"NATURE GIFTS"
Artamontsev Gallery - May 14 to May 30 - 19.00
Solo Exhibition of Desislava Deneva
For those who know well the story of Sofia Paper Art Fest, the name of Desislava
Deneva is associated with the award for Bulgarian author in 2014 in
Annual exhibition-competition for small format art paper. Artamontsev Gallery
presented Daniel Kondikov in 2013 during the Festival and now again in its space will
be shown the work of another acknowledged Bulgarian talent - Desislava Deneva.
The author is emblematic name in Bulgarian contemporary art with a number of
prizes in the drawing, printmaking, painting and art paper now. She is a remarkable
author seeking with every project a new field and ideas, changing the means of
expression and always surprises with a new concept, a fine sense of balance and a
lovely color. This exhibition is a peculiar balance for the eternal theme of femininity
together with the monumental sounding of the works woven by structures with muted
colors climate creating a special feeling for eternity.
And still, what does she say about her exhibition in Sofia Paper Art Fest and
the revelation that she shares?
“According to the biblical understanding, the word "flesh" is opposed to "spirit" and
according to Job flesh sometimes means something alive and sensual. Interpreted as
the substance which constitutes the living creatures and man, and the phrase "flesh
and blood" is equivalent to a tangible reality.
The flesh is gentle and fierce at the same time. Brimming over life, the flesh invites
and attracts. It stiffens and is "posing" or on the contrary its curves dictate its rhythm.
The primordial femininity as a gift of nature is eternal artistic provocation. Nature –
the invariable teacher for beauty. This harmony is strong and real. It does not depend
on time, which floods us with its aesthetic advertising, fake "beauty", current fashion,
and indeed transient in its variability.
The eternal Eve’s vitality and fertility real as life. Without excessive shyness she
shares her gifts, but the truth is a risk that I accepted as an author.”
Desi Deneva
You are welcome in Artamontsev Gallery between May 14 to 30 and in the Night of
Museums and Galleries expect workshop and rendezvous with the talent of
Desislava Deneva.
