College of Fine Arts Convocation: May 21, 2011, 11:00 am PROCEDURE FOR GRADUATE DEGREE RECIPIENTS All degree recipients must arrive at the Track and Tennis Center no later than 10:15 am. Please note: there is no secure storage so you should leave valuables with your guests. 1. When you arrive, proceed directly to the graduate check-in area for your school/degree program where you will be checked in as present and receive a numbered card. You must be checked in and have your name card with you on stage in order to have your name announced. You will keep this card throughout the ceremony. 2. Do not wear your hood, as you will be “hooded” as part of the ceremony. Carry your hood on your left arm. Your tassel should be on the left side of your cap and will remain there. 3. At 10:45 am, the faculty marshals will line you up within your School. You will be in alphabetical order within degree program in the procession and will line up by the number on your card. 4. You will be marching single file under the guidance of faculty marshals. The order of the march is Music (DMA, MM, OI, PD), Visual Arts (MFA) and (MA), and Theatre (MFA) and Artisan Certificate 5. Graduate degree recipients will process and when seated, will be sitting on the right, facing the stage 6. Everyone will sit when the procession music stops. Caps are not removed. 7. The program will begin with remarks by Dean Juárez and our guest speaker, noted artist Frank Stella. After the student speaker and some additional announcements, we will proceed to the awarding of graduate degrees. PROCEDURE FOR AWARDING GRADUATE DEGREES AND HOODING PLEASE READ CAREFULLY! (Opera Institute certificates, Performance Diplomas and Artisan Certificates will be awarded in same manner, but without hooding.) a. A faculty marshal will announce the awarding of the graduate degrees in music. All graduate music degree candidates should stand when your degree program is announced. b. You will be directed to the stage by a faculty marshal. Before your name is called, you will be hooded by a member of the faculty. c. Give the CFA staff member (Alyssa Baker) on stage your name card. A faculty marshal will announce your name and degree program to the audience. d. After your name and degree is announced, walk towards Dean Juárez, who will hand you your diploma and shake your hand. Take the diploma folder with your left hand so your right hand is free to shake hands with the Dean; a professional photographer will take your picture. You will shake hands with your school’s director. e. After you receive your diploma folder, continue across the stage and down the stairs to return to your seat, guided by faculty marshals. You may not be sitting in the same seat. f. The same procedure is followed for all graduate degree recipients. g. The order of the degrees is School of Music (Doctor of Musical Arts, Master of Music, Diplomas and Certificates), School of Visual Arts (MFA) and (MA), School of Theatre (MFA) and Artisan Certificate. Bachelors’ degrees will be awarded after the completion of the graduate degrees. 8. Following awarding of bachelor degrees and closing remarks, the music will begin and everyone will stand. 9. Under the guidance of marshals, the graduate recipients will exit, starting with the front row. 10. Please note: Master of Music (MM), Master of Fine Arts (MFA) and Master of Arts (MA) degree recipients must proceed out with their class and then directly to the check-in area (same area that you received your card in) of the Track and Tennis Center. CFA staff will hand you your actual diploma which you can put in your diploma folder. (DMA degree recipients will have received their diploma on the stage). This will be a very quick process which you should do before meeting your family to make sure you have your diploma. Diplomas will be distributed for the first 30 minutes after the ceremony. 11. There is a reception for graduates and guests immediately following the ceremony at the Track and Tennis Center. CONGRATULATIONS!
