Rachel Brown Working Annotated Bibliography for Ethnographic Essay Annotated Bibliography Carmichael, E. (2014, March 24). The swing shift. Sports Illustrated, 120(12), 56-61. Carmichael tells the incredible story of a woman named Breanna Stewart who has become a legend in women’s basketball. One main point of the article is that many people involved in this sport see tall people as playing one position and short players playing another, but Breanna Stewart, being 6’ 4’’, is able to play all positions on the court. Her goal was to get better and better every day, and it is evident that all of that hard work has paid off. Another point in the article explains how successful this particular team is thanks to Stewart and that Stewart is looking forward to winning many more championships. This article emphasizes the fact that basketball is its own discourse community. In this sport, all the players are working towards two common goals: to get better at certain skills and make it to a championship. This particular article was found in the database SPORTDiscuss, originally from the magazine Sports Illustrated. Cousy, B., & Power, Jr., F. (1970). Basketball Concepts and Techniques. (pp. 17-20). Boston, MA: Allyn and Bacon, Inc. Cousy and Power, Jr. discuss in this book all of the important aspects of basketball, such as the offense, the defense, coaching skills, etc.. However, in the pages I selected in this book, they discuss how coaches should choose their players every season. One of the main points is that picking a team should be determined by the Rachel Brown Working Annotated Bibliography for Ethnographic Essay previous season: he/she must pick a workable size of players and also predict how older members may have improved over time. Another point is that coaches should focus on how they select their players. When there are players returning to the varsity team, it is important to group those varsity players together in order to help out new players or see if there are people eligible to be on that team, which allows a bond between everyone. This book proves that this sport is considered a discourse community because there is a good mix of new and older players. These particular pages were found in the book Basketball Concepts and Techniques, which was found in the on-campus library. Giannini, J. (2009). Court Sense: Winning Basketball's Mental Game. (pp. 146-149 and 158159). Champaign, IL: Human Kinetics. Gianni describes in this book the ways to becoming successful in this sport, but in these particular pages, he discusses the importance of intercommunication among players and the coach. One of the main points discusses coach-to-player communication, which involves the coach knowing his players and what messages can break through to them the best. He also must display his knowledge and have credibility: all of these characteristics will keep players motivated. Player-to-player communication is also involved in this sport, where players have to talk on the court during plays and constantly support players verbally. This source displays how much intercommunication is involved in basketball, an important aspect in a discourse community. These pages were found in Court Sense: Winning Basketball's Mental Game, a book found in the on-campus library. Rachel Brown Working Annotated Bibliography for Ethnographic Essay LaGrand, L. (1967). Coach's complete guide to winning basketball. (p. 29). West Nyack, New York: Parker Publishing Company, Inc. LaGrand created a novel about how basketball coaches can become successful and help bring the team to the top. His main point in bringing the best out in your players is the communication between the coach and the players. He lists what materials should be on the bulletin board in the coach’s office for the players to see, such as scouting reports or statistics of the team, individual players, and other teams. He also says putting the pre-practice warm-up plan, inspirational messages, and a brief outline about the next opponent the team will go against are all ways that players can be kept up to date. What LaGrand is describing is a characteristic of a discourse community. The players and coach have a way to provide information and feedback to one another- through posting on a bulletin board. This information was found in the book Coach’s Complete Guide to Winning Basketball, which was found in the TAMUCC library. Mand, A. (2001, July 23). WNBA shoots for online ballots. Advertising Age, 72(30), 25. Mand discusses in this article how the WNBA is advertising its events online compared to other sports websites. One main point made in this article is that the WNBA ranked number 4 in advertising, with more male-dominant sports websites taking the top 3 spots. Another point is that during the All-Star games, the league used banners to advertise their online ballots and also posted audio casts throughout their season. This particular periodical was able to prove that women's basketball has ways to communicate with individuals outside Rachel Brown Working Annotated Bibliography for Ethnographic Essay of the community through internet and physical banners in cities, also called genres. It allows people to give feedback on the season and also keep up with the players and the games. This periodical was located within the TAMUCC database where there are a large amount of credible periodicals and articles such as this one. Podmenik, N., Leskosek, B., & Erculj, F. (2012). The effect of introducing a smaller and lighter basketball on female basketball players' shot accuracy. Journal of Human Kinetics, 31, 131-138. These several authors create an interesting study on the effects of bigger vs. smaller basketballs on a player’s performance. One of the main points involved in this study is that shooting is a major part of playing the game, so in order to shoot effectively, the ball needs to be a certain size. Another point involved in it is the materials and methods required to fulfill this study. They took all female players in national teams, dividing them into three groups based on positions: guards, forwards, and centers and saw how they shoot based on those positions. All of this is important in order to be successful playing this sport because knowing how the ball affects performance and what position a player can shoot the best will take a player far. This article includes a lot of words and phrases affiliated with basketball, such as free throw or field goal, which emphasizes that basketball is its own discourse community because of a common language amongst individuals in it. This article was found in the EBSCO database, a website that includes many other articles on a variety of topics. Rachel Brown Working Annotated Bibliography for Ethnographic Essay Ramsay, J. (1963). Pressure basketball. (p. 187). Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice-Hall, Inc. This book written by Ramsey talks about different areas of basketball, such as defense and offense. However, this book also pinpoints the season, and one of the most important aspects of the season is picking the players to play in it. One of Ramsey’s major points is that you must have enough players in order to substitute; he recommends ten at the most. Another point is that having a variety of players with different skills is vital for winning games. It isn’t smart to have all of your players good at shooting; it’s important to have some good at defending, others good at blocking, etc… This particular section in the book proves that basketball teams have different players with different levels of expertise, and also states that they must have a certain number of players in order to exist. These characteristics of a discourse community were found in Pressure Basketball, a book found in the main section of the on-campus library. Swales, J. (2014). The concept of discourse communities. In E. Wardle & D. Downs (Eds.), Writing about Writing (2 ed., pp. 215-228). Boston: BEDFORD/ST.MARTINS. Swales defines and outlines the components that makes up a discourse community. He says that discourse communities have shared goals, purposes, and uses of language. Another main point involves understanding the lexis and shared goals, which allows someone to move forward or enter into a community. His primary focus on examining his issue is literacy. How we understand it is evolving, and our language use also changes when we interact with certain groups. This source was found in Writing about Writing, a text that is a composition of several essays Rachel Brown Working Annotated Bibliography for Ethnographic Essay Ward, R. (2013, April 21). Two Opals same goal. The (Melbourn) Sunday Age, p. 16. Ward talks about two Australian girls named Rachel and Jenna who are both going to different teams, but are fighting for the same goal- the championship. One point made in this article is that both girls are working hard to achieve this goal by going to training camps and working on their skills. Another point that is made is that although they are both working hard, the future is still uncertain for them. Entering a new country on a new team would be frightening for any player, but they are both focused on just winning. This article defends my point of this discourse community sharing common goals. Every player, no matter from what country is fighting for a spot in the championship, but in order to achieve this long-term goal, short-term goals (such as working on strength or weak skills) must be completed as well. This article was found in an online newspaper on the on-campus database, a website that includes an infinite amount of resources on different subjects. Wolff, A. (2011, November 21). How i spent my lockout. Sports Illustrated, 115(20), 68-73. In this article, Wolff talks about a famous national basketball player named Jose Juan Barea, who plays for the Dallas Mavericks but may play for Puerto Rico in the Olympics. One main point made in this article that proves basketball is a discourse community is the large amount of advertising done for this sport. Billboards, Sprite, Converse, T-Mobile, and even a clothing line are all advertising endorsements that get his name and the Rachel Brown Working Annotated Bibliography for Ethnographic Essay basketball association’s name out there. According to Swales, discourse communities must use genres to communicate to others around them. This article proves that there are hundreds of genres the National Basketball Association uses to provide information to the world and persuade them to go check out some of the top basketball players. This article was found in the school database EBSCO, but more specifically through SPORTDiscus, where you find hundreds of articles about a variety of sports.
