Body (Main) lies underneath of a sheet CS. Priest enters singing religious hymn. People begin to enter one by one, placing flowers on the ground in front of the coffin, and go to individual positions. Individual’s tableau in specific mournful positions. Priest folds back sheet covering the body to expose the face and neck, and walks off SL. Main sits up, confused; all other characters are still frozen. She gets up frantically and begins to wave her hands in front of tableau faces. LFX: Lighting up about 75% on coffin, but still lighting up faces of mourners. SFX: None until transition, transition- fade in “Arrival of the Birds- Cinematic Orchestra” fade out. MAIN CHARACTER: I… I don’t, understand. Where am I? I can't die before the end. It would be so embarrassing. It can’t be, there’s no reason for it. There has to be a reason. (Pause) I look for patterns. Clues to keep me going. This goes against everything I’ve ever believed in. What do I believe in? There has to be a reason. Main runs back to the bench, crying a little and sits in front of the coffin, back to the audience. The mourners come out of tableau, completely unaware of Main and do not acknowledge her in any way. As the mourners walk offstage they repeat the words “there has to be a reason,” overlapping and walking horizontally across stage to transition into next scene. 4 Act 1, Scene 2 Lucky Woman partakes in the transition, but catches herself before exiting SR. She flings off her cardigan and walks back over to the bench where Main Character is. LFX: Lights up brighter to highlight most of the stage now. As characters enter from sides, lights up on either DSL or DSR. SFX: None until transition, transition- fade in “Arrival of the Birds- Cinematic Orchestra” fade out. LUCKY WOMAN: I was born lucky. wants. I have something everybody MAIN CHARACTER: I think I was born unlucky… You know, even in the Bible, at the end, there's the part about when the world ends? You’re completely screwed and there’s nothing you can do about it. (Coughs) just dust in my throat. You were born lucky? Help me if you can (gestures to what was previously coffin) I don’t think I was ever really happy, I wonder if I knew that. LUCKY WOMAN: They want my luck. They believe it’s contagious. Or somehow transmissible. WOMAN 2: The flu. No spitting. No kissing. No public gatherings. If you have it they put a notice on your door. You're quarantined. WOMAN 3: Overheard some people talking about the soldier. They thought it was a bad idea that a man that had been around the flu out east was now in town, and that it was lucky for us he couldn't move around too much. He’s not doing very well. WOMAN 2: Don’t be so quick to judge. One day you might find yourself in a position where you need a little luck. LUCKY WOMAN: They think they’re so lucky. The fact he was badly wounded indeed made them lucky but for a very different reason. But it would be no use with these types WOMAN 4: I don’t believe in luck. 5 WOMAN 5: Then explain this… My sister has recovered quickly from the flu. She's always been a little faster at most things than the normal person. WOMAN 4: Are you saying luck is genetic? So where did your “luck” come from. WOMAN 5: (After a pause) I kissed a boy a few days back. I still feel him on my lips. He was very, very… lucky. LUCKY WOMAN: (to Main Character) That’s ridiculous. The truth is, you can’t change your luck. And it will end, sooner or later. So quit while you’re ahead. WOMAN 2: It’s about the winning. Everybody wants to be lucky. Or luckier. Three more dead in Rosetown. WOMAN 3: Being lucky is not all it’s cracked up to be. Doesn't necessarily mean you’re better off. Or happier. WOMAN 2: Well, people are dying; luck is like your penis, you can always use a little more. LUCKY WOMAN: (to Main Character) Just because there’s a chance of something happening, that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen. You still need a little luck. WOMAN 4: Am I unlucky? I had the flu already this spring. But I kind of liked it. Lying around a lot. Abruptly, everyone on stage turns to stare at Woman 4. WOMAN 2: Idiot. WOMAN 4: You like to bet, don’t you? WOMAN 5: That’s what we do, we lucky people. After all, he who lives by the coin flip should die by the coin flip, don’t you think. MAIN CHARACTER: Let’s say you are lucky. Why? Why are you so lucky? That’s what I want to know. Women 2, 3, 4, 5 walk towards Main Character on bench. Touch her forehead and shoulder, in a friendly manner. 6 WOMAN 3: (to each other) She has a fever, poor dear. WOMAN 2: We hope you feel better. MAIN CHARACTER: What? I’m not sick? Main Character starts coughing uncontrollably. Lucky Woman walks behind bench. LUCKY WOMAN: Luck is relative. It will end. Sooner or later. It has to. Main Character starts coughing and cannot stop. She dies on ground in front of bench. Everyone walks across the stage in the background repeating “it has to” over and over again. Idol enters and steps on top of block. Priest enters and takes Lucky Woman’s place behind the coffin, tying a belt around the idol. 7 Act 1, Scene 3 Main Character awakens in scene with Idol covered with the sheet UCS, coffin is still CS. LFX: Lights the same as scene 4. SFX: None until transition, transition- fade in “Arrival of the Birds- Cinematic Orchestra” fade out. MAIN CHARACTER: Is this you, God? PRIEST: Yes. MAIN CHARACTER: … Does God get angry? PRIEST: God does not get angry my child. MAIN: I’ll ask him, next time I talk to him. PRIEST: If it’s God’s will. I think it’s God’s will we are here right now, face to face. (Pause) Like the lamb, you were the first, it’s all a part of God’s plan. Priest walks over to the bench and holds arms up in a similar way to the idol. PRIEST: And behold! A pale horse and he who sat upon him, his name was death. Can you guess what followed? Main silently answers no. PRIEST: We are here because God created us and power was given to him with sword, famine, and with death! MAIN CHARACTER: That is such a tragedy… PRIEST: If it’s God’s will. MAIN CHARACTER: But what if God doesn’t exist? Priest moves toward Main Character to console her. PRIEST: This is why He brought you here. This is why He kept you here. This (motion to coffin/ bench)… this is God’s will. 8 Priest moves to the edge of the stage and Main Character moves to look at the idol and during the final sentence slowly falls to her death. PRIEST: What is meant to be will be. You cannot fight it. Transition happens and all characters walk across stage repeating the words “you cannot fight it.” While transition is going on Priest walks off and new scientist walks on (Scientist One) and removes the belt from the idol UCS. 9 Act 1, Scene 4 Scientist One enters during transition and tries to reason about how science influenced the events. Meanwhile, the idol is still there, but will soon be revealed as another scientist (Scientist Two). LFX: Same as scene 3. SFX: None until transition, transition- fade in “Arrival of the Birds- Cinematic Orchestra” fade out. SCIENTIST ONE: I’m the observer. I see things happen. Like triangles or circles, there’s a pattern. I look for patterns. Clues to keep me going. SCIENTIST TWO: Science is not a belief, it’s an absolute. It’s not a creation. It’s a discovery. SCIENTIST ONE: Most human bodies are the same. (Uses the belt to measure) Draw two parallel lines down from the pupil of the eyes and you find the corners of the mouth. Tip of the thumb to the tip of the index finger is the length of the nose. Length of the nose is one-third the length of the face. SCIENTIST TWO: Differences are only on the surface. Look closely and you will see the same. The model is consistent. SCIENTIST ONE: Our genes are the very building blocks of life. The order of the four base pairs in your DNA has programmed everything about you. That sequence created you. SCIENTIST TWO: There is nothing in the universe that cannot be explained by science. MAIN CHARACTER: If you’re a scientist, then prove that God doesn’t exist. SCIENTIST ONE: That’s impossible. MAIN CHARACTER: I’m not questioning gravity or disputing that the earth is round, but science is not the whole story. It gives us the what, not the why. Why is there gravity? Why is the earth round? It seems to me like science needs God as much as God needs science. 10 SCIENTIST ONE: Science needs God like an amoeba needs a Golgi apparatus. SCIENTIST TWO: God is unnecessary. God is redundant! We are the product of genes and evolution and probability. We do not need God to be our fudge factor. Science is the answer. SCIENTIST ONE: (Motions to the coffin CS) That person died of the flu. SCIENTIST TWO: People are dying front and rear. SCIENTIST ONE: The body carries germs. Burning it may be wise, in a way. I’m not saying it’s all right, really, but– MAIN CHARACTER: You don’t treat a human body like some pile of rubbish! Both Scientist One & Scientist Two walk towards Main Character behind the coffin CS. SCIENTIST TWO: I have something that might help. It’s a sort of salve for the skin. Scientist One grabs Main Character’s right wrist and checks her pulse. Looks at Scientist Two and shakes his head. SCIENTIST ONE: Call it. SCIENTIST TWO: Time of death…? SCIENTIST ONE: (Interrupts) Irrelevant. Main faints back into Scientist Two’s arms and dies. Scientist One walks off SR and Scientist Two places Main Character’s body on the coffin. Transition starts with Anonymous characters walking on in a line from SR holding a red string (all Anonymous people in black). Everyone is chanting a variety of numbers, in any order: one, two, three, five, eight.” 11 Act 1, Scene 5 During transition, the Anonymous characters walk across stage to create a Fibonacci Spiral with the red string behind the coffin CS. The Anonymous characters freeze. Mathematician enters SR and walks toward box DSL. LFX: Lighting the same as scene 4, light up DSR when Mathematician enters. SFX: Heartbeat sound fade in when Anonymous characters surround Main Character, and abruptly stops when she screams stop. MATHEMATICAN: One, one, two, three, five, eight. It’s the first six numbers of the Fibonacci sequence. The most fundamental and universal mathematical sequence ever identified. The Fibonacci sequence is seen in everything. In science. In nature. It is integral to the structure of the universe and everything in it. ALL ANONYMOUS CHARACTERS: All you need is a little math. MATHEMATICAN: You’re (to Main Character) a strange woman, mathematically speaking. MAIN CHARACTER: Why is this happening? MATHEMATICAN: Sorry to disappoint you, but math is absolute. You can’t mess with it. Sooner or later, probability will prevail. ALL ANONYMOUS CHARACTERS: Trust the numbers. MATHEMATICAN: Fibonacci brought you here. To me. ALL ANONYMOUS CHARACTERS: Look closely and you will see the same. MAIN CHARACTER: (to Mathematician) I knew there was a reason. There always is. I don’t believe in luck, good or bad. I think it’s a bunch of bullshit hogwash… But I believe in Fibonacci. ALL ANONYMOUS CHARACTERS: All you need is a little math. 1st ANONYMOUS: See this? It’s coming for sure. 12 2nd ANONYMOUS: 6,000 minus 4,082 equals 1,918. 1918 Main Character starts to feel uneasy onstage. 3rd ANONYMOUS: Born 1856, came to power in 1912, reigned 6 years, his age 62. Add those numbers up and it’s 3836. 4th ANONYMOUS: But it makes sense. The war. The weather. 5th ANONYMOUS: President Poincarré of France. Born 1860, came to power 1913, reigned 5 years, aged 58. Add it up...3836. Divide by two = 1918. Main Character starts to hold her head and act as though she has a headache. Starts to breathe heavily. 6th ANONYMOUS: How do I know? It’s common sense. 7th ANONYMOUS: It works for the King of England, Italy, the Czar, even the Mikado. 8th ANONYMOUS: Like triangles or circles, there’s a pattern. I look for patterns. All Anonymous characters begin to unravel their spiral and circle around Main Character. Each Anonymous character chants their line stated before, increasing with aggression and getting louder each time. Main Character gets overwhelmed and screams out, faints onto the coffin CS. Anonymous characters freeze, look at Main Character and walk off silently. MATHEMATICAN: (to audience) Trust the numbers. 13 Act 1, Scene 6 Main wakes up and walks toward DCS to face audience. She repeats the monologue from scene 1. MAIN CHARACTER: I… I don’t, understand. Where am I? I can't die before the end. It would be so embarrassing. It can’t be, there’s no reason for it. Characters from scene 1 (funeral) begin to walk on randomly and get into tableau from the first scene around the coffin CS. MAIN CHARACTER: patterns. Clues everything I’ve There has to be There has to be a reason. I look for to keep me going. This goes against ever believed in. What do I believe in? a reason. Main Character looks around at all the funeral goers. She walks over to the coffin and lays down, pulling the sheet over herself. PRIEST: Thank you all for coming today. We must remember the joy she brought us, and celebrate her life. We will never know why this had to happen, and maybe it doesn’t matter. Rest in Peace. LFX: All general lighting fades out into a blue spotlight on the coffin. Fin. 14
