The 2nd Catchment Research Group Water Circle Seminar of 2011 was presented by Prof. Kate Rowntree of the Rhodes Geography Department. Her seminar, entitled: Landscape connectivity, a hydro-geomorphic framework for landscape restoration in the Baviaanskloof, South Africa, provided an overview of research being conducted by Lindie Ado-Smith, Rebecca Joubert and Kerry Bobbins under the joint supervision of Prof. Rowntree and Prof. Ellery of the Rhodes Geography and Environmental Science Departments. The focus of her seminar surrounded the development and application of a framework to demonstrate an integrated approach to catchment restoration using the geomorphological principle of connectivity. This framework is positioned within a broader restoration initiative undertaken by Living Lands, a Dutch non-profit organization, through their research network PRESENCE. Their philosophy of integrated catchment management is being used to guide future developments in the valley within which the Rhodes research is positioned.
