Library

Welcome back to those of you who are returning for a new year at Bradford, and also to those of
you who are new! We hope you enjoy your time with us and wish you every success in your
studies.
We provide:

academic and technical guidance, with 24 / 7 access to computing facilities, including free

Office 365 ProPlus
Students and staff can download the latest version of Microsoft Office via Office 365 ProPlus free
of charge through their University Office 365 email account. It can be installed on up to five
personally owned PCs or Macs, as well as mobile devices including iPad, Android and Windows
tablets.
Office 365 ProPlus is licensed by Microsoft for home use only and therefore should not be
downloaded on University PCs.For more information see

Library language: words and definitions
If you’re struggling to understand some of the words we use in the library, look them up on our
‘Library Language’ page, where we’ve created a list of words and definitions. You can find this
page under the ‘Help’ section on the library home page: www.bradford.ac.uk/library.
Referencing styles
We have reduced the number of referencing styles in use in the University from 14 to 4! This
means there might be slight changes to the style in use for your programme. For more
information see www.bradford.ac.uk/library/help/referencing
Sunray cluster replacement
The Sunray clusters in room 0.38, Student Central and room F42 Richmond building have been
replaced with PCs.
Laptop and laptop lock loans
If you choose to borrow a laptop from the Library you can now install your own software for the
duration of the loan period. When the laptop is returned the software will be removed ready for
the next user.
If you have your own laptop you can choose to borrow a Kensington lock to secure it. Please ask
at the Library Enquiry Desk.

If you are a new student in September 2015, we’ve added £2 to your printing account, to help get
you started.
Logging in
The format of your login details differs depending on which service you are accessing:

username (eg jbloggs2) and password – for PCs, Blackboard, e:Vision, PebblePad, and
RoamNet;

username@bradford.ac.uk (eg jbloggs2@bradford.ac.uk) and password – for email and
eduroam;

University of Bradford number and Library PIN – for your Library record and printing.
If you forget your password or Library PIN you can set a new one in the About UoB app, on the
web at www.bradford.ac.uk/it-services/password or at a password kiosk in the J. B. Priestley
Library, the Hub or the Cartwright Building at the Faculty of Management and Law.

Problem with your computer?
The PC Clinic is a diagnostic troubleshooting service dealing with software and minor hardware
issues on your own PC or laptop. The service is available by appointment only .To book please

Abode Creative Cloud
Adobe Creative Cloud “Design Web Premium” is now available on cluster PCs. This gives you
access to over 20 Adobe Creative Cloud applications including the following:


Adobe Dreamweaver.

Adobe Flash Professional.


Edge browser and University applications
If you’ve upgraded your own PC or laptop to Windows 10 then you’ll know that the default
browser is ‘Edge’. Some services (eg Blackboard) aren’t quite working with Edge yet. If you find
problems, please use another browser (eg Firefox or Chrome) for the time being.
Library support for disabled users
Additional Library support is available for disabled users. You can find information at:

New scanning to email facility
You can now scan using the Library MFD machines that you currently use to print and photocopy.
This is a much faster way of scanning particularly multiple page documents. The scanned
document will then be sent directly to your email.
New Microsoft Office Version
Microsoft Office 2013 is now available on student cluster PCs.

Password security
It is essential that you protect your data and your personal identity by choosing a strong
password. Weak passwords are believed to be one of the major ways that ‘hacks’ into personal
accounts are successful.
Strong password best practice

Passwords should be longer than 8 characters – longer passwords make stronger
passwords.

Password should be easy for you to remember and so NEVER need to be written down.

Passwords should contain upper and lower case letters, numbers and punctuation.

Passwords should not be based on personal names or user names, e.g.
jrbloggs@bradford.ac.uk cannot have the password jrbloggs, jrBLoggs, or jrBloggsisAce.

Passwords should not be based on words that can be found in any dictionary, including
foreign language dictionaries.

Whilst substituting letters with numbers can be a good thing, common substitutions such
as 1 for I, 0 for 0, etc., confer no additional security when applied to simple dictionary
words. Password cracking tools have rules in place to test for these.

Passwords should not be reused for different services.

The best passwords can be based on phrases. Choose a line from a song, book or poem
and use the first letter of each word. Eg Phrase: The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain,
initial letters: trisfmotp, password: Tr!SfM0tp
Finally, no member of staff is permitted to ask for your password. Your password is the key to
your safe and should never be shared with anyone.
Keep your details safe

Never enter your University username and password on any website, other than University
of Bradford systems. Always access the systems you need (eg Blackboard, email, e:Vision)
via the University's internal home page.

Never share your password. The University will never ask you to confirm your password,
especially not via an email or phone call. If you receive an email claiming to be from an IT
department asking you to supply your password, simply delete it – emails like this are
phishing emails, intended to steal your account details.
When registering for an account on non-University websites, never use the same password that
you use for University systems. For more tips see:

Improvements to eduroam (WiFi)
We have changed the way that eduroam checks usernames and passwords. This gives a more
reliable connection than the current system.
Some devices, especially Apple and Windows, now have to accept a certificate to connect to
eduroam. Android devices should connect automatically.
Apple devices
If you connect to eduroam on an
iPhone or iPad you may see a screen
with the heading 'Certificate'.
1. Check that the name is citrinec.net.brad.ac.uk
2. Select Accept or Trust.
You should now be connected to
eduroam.
Troubleshooting
If the WiFi symbol on the top of your device has disappeared, and you know the room has WiFi,
you may need to do the following:
1. Select the Settings icon from the home screen and then choose WiFi.
2. If WiFi is turned off, turn WiFi on.
3. Select the network named eduroam.
4. You may need to fill in your username and password.
Note: Important: you must use your username, not your email address. For example: a student
called 'J B Priestley' would have the University username 'jbpriest', his email would be
'j.b.priestley@bradford.ac.uk' (or 'j.b.priestley@student.bradford.ac.uk' if he registered with
the University before 16 June 2014), however to login to eduroam he would need to use
'jbpriest@bradford.ac.uk')
5. Select Join.
6. When asked, choose to accept the security certificate.
Windows devices
Accept the certificate if prompted. More detailed information will be available later.

About UoB mobile app
Improved menus and design
About UoB is the official mobile app for the University of
Bradford. Based on feedback from the 2014 / 15 app contest
we’re streamlining the content and overhauling our menu
system to make things easier to find. The menu items will be
finished by the end of September. See the UBU tile which has the
new look already. We hope you like it. If you want to you can
feed back via app’s Settings menu.
Location aware content
We’re working closely with the Students’ Union to bring location aware services to About UoB. We
hope, as this service is developed, that it may be able to include things such as: an alert on your
phone to tell you that your library books need renewing when you walk past the Library.
GPS doesn’t work well indoors, so we’re in the process of deploying the latest Bluetooth beacon
technology across campus. These little beacons broadcast a location ID which your phone can
pick up when you come into range. Although currently limited, location services will improve as
we deploy more beacons across the campus.
If you’d like to receive location specific content:
1. Install the About UoB app.
2. Turn Bluetooth on.
3. Choose allow location based services when asked.
If you don’t like receiving some types of messages you can choose to opt out and not receive
them in future.
