Job Title: Associate Director of Development & Communications Team: Administration, Resource Development Immediate Supervisor: Director of Resource Development The Neighborhood Developers (TND) is a non-profit community development corporation working to revitalize neighborhoods by building affordable housing, promoting economic empowerment, and supporting community building through organizing. TND believes great neighborhoods empower people to grow and prosper. Our target areas are in Chelsea and Revere Massachusetts, historic but largely low-income gateway communities, home to a richly diverse population of first and second generation immigrants from Central America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Position Summary Description This is a new position that will support expansion of TND’s Resource Development strategies. The Associate Director will join a team that is building and implementing a new fundraising and communications plan to raise the necessary revenue to achieve long-term organizational goals. The key areas of focus for the position will include: stewarding relationships with individual donors, building a leadership giving program, cultivating corporate sponsorships and managing TND’s external communications plan to support organizational fundraising and visibility goals. We are looking for someone with the ability to relate well to corporate and individual philanthropic donors and who has relevant experience to shape, manage and drive our results-driven resource development plan. The Associate Director will develop and implement a specific individual and corporate sponsorship fundraising and communications plan to leverage and maximize impact of the Community Investment Tax Credit (CITC), a new fundraising tool available beginning in 2014. This work is reviewed by the Director of Resource Development, and will work closely with the Executive Director, the Board and TND’s program directors. While this is a new position, the Associate Director will join a resource development and communications team of four staff and consultants that manage grant writing, data collection and evaluation, and communications. Together the team will raise more than $1.5 million in 2014. Existing Resource Development Program TND’s 2013 operating budget is $2.37 million with a resource development goal of $1.5 million. The organization has a solid track record of fundraising results largely generated through institutional donors (foundations, corporations, and state and federal government sources). TND is a member of the national NeighborWorks America network, a Congressionally funded network of community development nonprofits that provides annual funding and capacity building support. Over the last three years, the organization has tested new resource development strategies and raised $275,000 through sponsorships and individual donors. The Director will further build out TND’s private-sector philanthropy, managing corporate sponsorships and leadership giving. Additionally, the Director will take responsibility crafting the organization’s communications work plan and overseeing its implementation. In 2012, TND and five partners launched a systems-changing collaboration called CONNECT. The program is housed at TND’s headquarters and TND serves as the sole operational partner. A three-year $3 million US Department of Labor grant was received in mid-2012 to launch the collaboration. CONNECT provides many opportunities for expanding our public and private funding resources and 1 strategies. Responsibilities: 1. Implement Individual and Corporate Resource Development activities, including: Develop and implement annual individual and corporate resource development plan; devise strategies to achieve external meeting and fundraising goals set in plan. Implement new CONNECT Leadership Giving Campaign that seeks to raise $1 million for programming and capital over three years. The work plan includes corporate and institutional sponsorships, facility naming opportunities, and establishing new advisory board and leadership council giving activities. Develop TND’s capacity to utilize state-supported Community Investment Tax Credits as a private sector fundraising tool, beginning in 2014. Research, identify and cultivate relationships with existing and potential individual and corporate funding sources in collaboration with the Executive Director, Board, TND program directors, and other resource development staff. Develop and staff a leadership giving committee; build new leadership giving program. Represent TND and CONNECT throughout the fundraising process; attend external meetings and community events on behalf of TND as needed. Work with program managers and TND evaluation staff to market new and existing programs and products to donors and potential donors. 2. External Communications Responsibilities Develop and direct TND’s Communications Plan. Manage staff responsible for coordinating communications and public relations activities. Oversee the development of communications materials, including the annual report, donor newsletters, press releases, organizational brochures, program/product information and general information packets. Take responsibility for messaging delivered during all TND public events. 3. Other Participate actively in TND’s organizational meetings, events and initiatives Other activities as requested Work Requirements Bachelor’s degree is required; a master’s degree in a related field is preferred. In addition, five (5) to seven (7) years of responsible experience in resource development is required, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills and abilities: Knowledge: Knowledge of fundraising techniques with relevant expertise in private sector philanthropy, including individual and leadership giving. Knowledge of public and private resources as potential sources of funding for programs and projects, including those involved with housing and economic development activities. Knowledge of program/product development in housing and economic development. 2 Understanding of local, state, and national media procedures and practices. Experience in working with and in racially and culturally diverse communities. Excellent computer knowledge: Word processing Spreadsheet creation and interpretation Database management (TND uses SalesForce to manage our fundraising activity). Skills and Abilities: Must be a motivated fundraiser with a demonstrated ability to raise funds. Excellent verbal and written communication skills—i.e., demonstrated ability to express thoughts, perceptions and ideas clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing, including editing and creating original materials. Demonstrated ability to manage a large volume of activity and to adhere to strict schedules. Demonstrated ability to show accuracy, timeliness and follow-up on tasks. Ability to interact positively with the public and with staff, board and advisory board members. Ability to work independently meeting overall objectives within specified timeframes. Demonstrated ability to take initiative. Ability to make sound decisions within the scope of the job.
