and universities, scholarships, and other items of interest to seniors. Please read it carefully!

ACADEMIC CONCERNS: Your counselor will be checking report cards and talking with students who are failing
classes which are needed to graduate. If you have academic concerns, you should first talk with the teacher and
then, if the concern continues, see your counselor.

FINANCIAL AID NIGHT: December 2, 2013 at 6:00pm. Located in the Board of Education Community Room.
This meeting will focus on the financial aid process and the FAFSA. Students needing financial aid for college
must submit the FAFSA, which is based on information from the 2012 income tax return. The FAFSA is generally
completed in January or February and must be completed on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Financial aid information
can be found at www.oasfaa.org; www.regents.ohio.gov; and by phone at 1-877-428-8246.

CAMPUS CONNECTIONS: Graduates from the Class of 2012 will be visiting NRHS on December 21st to share
their experiences with college bound seniors who have completed a college application or have taken the ACT or
SAT (by the October test date). Eligible seniors will receive an invitation.

Students interested in attending a military service academy (U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S.
Merchant Marine Academy, and U.S. Naval Academy) should complete an academy nomination application and
send all required materials to Honorable Betty Sutton in Akron. The deadline is November 15, 2012. See the
Guidance Office for the application and more information.
APPLYING FOR COLLEGE



College applications are due by December 2nd. Most colleges have their applications online. LCCC applications
are available in the guidance office. All applications processed in guidance after December 2nd will have a $2 late
fee assessed. Call your counselor immediately with any questions. College bound seniors who wish to have their
applications sent prior to winter break must bring their applications to the guidance office no later than Friday,
December 6th. We cannot guarantee that applications received after that date will be mailed prior to January.
This policy applies to both college and scholarship applications.
When you apply, please come to the guidance office to request your transcript. Bring any additional application
forms or fees to guidance.
Your counselor will add your transcript, complete the Secondary School Report form, if necessary, and send in
your application for you. Be sure to give us two weeks, especially if teacher and/or counselor recommendations
are required.

SCHOLARSHIPS
The biggest source of scholarship money is from the college you plan to attend. When researching colleges, be sure to
determine the scholarships they offer. Another source is private groups and organizations. Information on scholarships
will be made available to seniors on a periodic basis in this newsletter. Be sure to review this information when it comes
out and stop in the guidance office to get information on any scholarships you may be eligible for.
Pay attention to deadlines.
Information on the following scholarships is available online or in the guidance office. Please request in writing
applications and nomination forms to Ms. Fedorko 24 hours before you need it. She will get you the information, but if
you have any questions about scholarships see your counselor. You need to submit all completed scholarship and
college applications 7 school days before the deadline to ensure they are submitted to the appropriate
organizations before the deadline.
•
National Perry Chapter Awards – The National Perry Chapter is a program for outstanding young people who
demonstrate qualities of a good citizen. Each individual must submit an essay on the topic provided. This program
awards $100.00 for the winning essay and winners have the opportunity to go to district, state, and national levels to
win larger scholarship amounts. All materials are due by November 4, 2013. See the Guidance Office for more
information.

Stokes Educational Scholarship Program – The program is open to high school seniors, particularly minority
students, planning to major in computer science or computer/electrical engineering. With this program, you will
attend college full-time, and then work during the summer at NSA’s main headquarters in Fort Meade, Maryland, for a
minimum of 12 weeks in areas that are related to your course of study. You would have paid tuition of to $30,000 a
year. Visit NSA.gov/Careers for more information. Applications must be submitted by November 15, 2014.

Youth Volunteer Scholarship Award--$500 award for a winning essay. Students must have at least a 3.5
cumulative GPA and have completed at least 50 hours of volunteer work in the past 2 years. See

•
Elks National Foundation’s 2012 Most Valuable Student - Elks National Foundation will award 500 4-year
scholarships to the highest rated applicants in this year’s competition. The application covers the student’s work
experience, community service, honors and awards, leadership, citizenship, and family income. Visit
www.elks.org/enf/scholars to apply. DEADLINE is December 6, 2013.

Best Buy Scholarship - Up to 1,200 students will each receive a $1,000 scholarship. If you’re a 9-12 grade student
who plans to attend post-secondary education, have solid grades and are involved in community service or work

AXA Achievement Scholarship - AXA Achievers are students who demonstrate: ambition and drive, determination
to set and reach goals, respect for self, family and community, and ability to succeed in college. If you are a wellrounded student who is determined to succeed and demonstrated achievement at a job, sport or extracurricular
activity then go to www.axa-achievement.com and apply today. The deadline is Dec. 15, 2013.
•
Odenza Marketing Group Volunteer Scholarship--$500 award for a winning essay. Students must have at least
a 2.5 cumulative GPA and have completed at least 50 hours of volunteer work in the past 12 months. See
http://www.studentscholarships.org/college.php for the application. Deadline is December 30, 2013.
•
SAE Engineering Scholarships - For students planning a career in engineering. This program consists of
scholarships that can be used at any college or university and scholarships that must be used at a particular college
or university. Applications, FAQs, and full details can be found at www.sae.org/students/engschlr.htm
Deadline is December 31, 2013.
•
The Imagine America High School Scholarship Program - Students who are interested in attending a partner
college can apply for a $1000 scholarship through the Imagine America Foundation’s website at www.imagineamerica.org by December 31, 2013.
•
Foundation for Individual Rights in Education – High school juniors and seniors for the 2012-2013 school year
are eligible to participate in FIRE’s essay contest. To enter, students must submit an essay between 800 and 1000
words on the provided topic. One $10,000 first prize, one $5,000 second prize and three $1,000 runner-up prizes will
be awarded for the best essays. Four $500 winners will be chosen from the remaining entrants in a drawing. FIRE will
accept essay contest entries until January 1, 2014. Visit thefire.org/contest to enter.

GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program – The GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program annually
awards roughly 20 college-bound students who demonstrate exemplary leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship
with $10,000 renewable scholarships- up to $40,000 total per recipient. Visit www.reaganfoundation.org/scholarships
for more information. The deadline is January 9, 2014.

Burger King Scholars Program - Scholarship grants range from $1,000 to $50,000, and are intended to help
students offset the cost of attending college or post-secondary vocational/technical school. Recipients are selected
based on their grade point average, work experience, extracurricular activities and/or community service. The
application period for the 2014 school year begins on Nov. 15, 2013 and ends on Jan. 10, 2014. For more

The Park Scholar Awards through Ithaca College – The Park Scholar Program offers much more than a
scholarship: it creates a dynamic learning community that develops future communication leaders who engage
critically, act globally, and perform ethically. They are renewable for up to three years (for a total of four), cover the
full cost of attendance, and include stipends for living expenses, books, and one-time computer purchase of $2,500.
Park Scholar Award application, essays, resume, three letters of recommendation, and transcript on file are due by
January 15, 2013.

RMHC U.S. Scholarships – $1,000 will be awarded to 100 individuals who are a high school senior, eligible to
attend a 2 or 4 year college. The deadline is January 21, 2014 and applications can be found by going to :

Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship – Through its Education and Leadership Development Program, the
Jackie Robinson Foundation provides scholarships of up to $24,000/four years to minority high school students
showing leadership potential and demonstrating financial need to attend an accredited 4-year college or university of

deadline due by February 14, 2014.

National Co-op Scholarship Program – WACE will award 195 merit co-op scholarships for a total value of
$4,900,000. These merit co-op scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors and transfer students who plan to
participate in college cooperative education at one of their Partner Institutions. For more information, visit
http://www.waceinc.org/scholarship/. Applications are due by February 14, 2014.
•
Cavaliers/FirstMerit Scholarship Program – Awarding ten (10) $2,000 scholarships to students who apply. To
apply provide entry form, 500-word essay on the following question: “What’s the most important lesson you’ve
learned up to this point in your life and how do you plan to apply that lesson going forward”, letter of
recommendation, official school transcripts, and ACT or SAT scores. Deadline due February 14, 2014.

Lake Erie Chapter of the Ohio Credit Union League – The Lake Erie Chapter of the Ohio Credit Union League is
pleased to announce it will be awarding five $500 scholarships to students in Erie, Huron and Lorain Counties. To
qualify, an applicant must be at least a high school senior and in pursuit of any kind of post-secondary education.
Credit union membership is not required. Applications are due by February 28, 2014.

School Employees Lorain County Credit Union Young Adult Scholarship Program: Applicants must be members
of School Employees Lorain County Credit Union, between the ages of 17-25; and registered to attend college full
time, fall 2013. Four (4) non-renewable scholarships of $1,000 each; application must be post-marked by February
28, 2014.
•
Peter Pasula Study Habits Scholarship--$500 award for a winning essay. See
www.mortgagebrokerscoquitlam.com for the application. Deadline is April 1, 2014.
•
USAA Scholarship – The scholarship provides national recognition and scholarship opportunities for teacher
nominated students. The Foundation will award 400 national scholarships plus the $10,000 Dr. George A Stevens
Founder’s Award. Nominations are due by April 5, 2014. For more information, please visit www.usaaacademy.com.

Maple Leaf Dentistry Scholarship----$500 award for a winning application. Students must have at least a 3.0
GPA in the last school year and have completed at least 100 hours of volunteer work in the past 2 years. See
www.peterboroughdentists.com for the application. Deadline is May 30, 2014.
•
Aspiring Animation Professional Scholarship Program--$1000 awarded to student interested in pursuing an
animation career path at a post-secondary school. An application and essay must be completed by June 1, 2014.

Abbott and Fenner Scholarship Program – They award up to $1,000 to winners each year. Students must submit
an essay on the topic that appears on the scholarship page of their website:

BigSun Scholarship – All senior student athletes attending a post-secondary institute and currently involved in any
sport are eligible to apply for a $500 scholarship. Visit http://www.bigsunathletics.com to learn how to apply. The
deadline is June 14, 2014.
ACT AND SAT TESTING
If you plan to go to college, you will probably need to take either the ACT or the SAT. The ACT and SAT school code
number for NRHS is 363-860. Seniors planning to take these tests should test no later than the December test
date. The ACT is the preferred test for Ohio Colleges and Universities. Register online at www.actstudent.org. We
recommend you apply online to receive the benefits of online registration.

NCAA CLEARINGHOUSE FORMS: You need to register with the NCAA Clearinghouse as soon as possible if there is a
chance you will play Division I or II sports in college. You can register on-line at www.ncaaclearinghouse.com or you can
pick up the NCAA Clearinghouse form in the Guidance Office.
