OREGON BIRDING ASSOCIATION—35th Annual Meeting
Special Pelagic Trip
Friday, September 26, 2014
As part of its 35th Annual Meeting in Bandon, Oregon, the Oregon Birding Association is offering a
special, deep water pelagic trip prior to the Meeting. Registration for the trip is separate as the pelagic
registration check will be returned should weather and coastal conditions prevent the charter from
departing on the morning of September 26th. You can participate in the special pelagic trip only
without or attending the Annual Meeting or being a member. Should the pelagic trip be canceled on
the morning of Sept. 26th, land based field trips will be made available as an alternative at no cost for
those who have registered for the Annual Meeting. Space is limited to 30, so please register for the
pelagic trip ASAP.
The Trip
This will be a 9 ½ hour deep water trip with three pelagic guides. This day long trip will return you in
time for the OBA Annual Meeting’s Friday night dinner and speaker. Potential sightings include Blackfooted Albatross, Parasitic and Pomarine Jaeger, Pink-footed and Sooty Shearwater, Northern Fulmar,
Sabine’s Gull and Red-necked Phalarope. Participants should bring a lunch, seasick medication if needed,
warm clothing—layers is best plus rain pants and rain coats—sunscreen and water/beverages.
The Schedule
Meet at the Betty Kay Charter in the Charleston Marina at 6AM. The restaurant in the boat basin will
open at 5 for those who want breakfast. The trip will go from 6:30 AM to 4 PM. Dinner at the Annual
Meeting in Bandon begins at 6 PM in the Community Center. Registration there goes from 4 to 6 PM.
Directions
30 minutes from Bandon. North 8.7 miles on Highway 101, turn left on West Beaverhill Road (sign on
Highway 101 marked “Charleston”) which turns into Seven Devils Road for 12 miles, then right on Cape
Arago Highway for .3 mile, left on Boat Basin Road. Marina comes up less than ½ mile on right. From
Coos Bay follow signs “Ocean Beaches / Charleston”. Go 8 miles on Cape Arago Highway from Coos Bay,
cross bridge, turn right on Boat Basin Road.
