The most important thing that you can do to prepare for your trip is to get plenty of Cardiovascular Exercise! This includes activities such as running, strenuous hiking, cycling, swimming, basketball, etc. The main point is to get your heart rate up high (between 160 and 180 beats per minute) and keep it there for at least 20-30 minutes. This will also cause your breathing to be faster and deeper. You should be getting a cardiovascular workout at least three times per week for a few months preceding your trip. 2. Anything you can do to get in shape is helpful. If you play soccer, keep it up! If you work out with weights, that’s great, but you’ll also need to do some cardiovascular conditioning as well. The better your conditioning, the more fun you’ll have, so go for it! 3. The worst thing you can do to prepare is to sit on the couch playing video games, eating potato chips, and drinking soda. Acclimatizing to Altitude: Altitude sickness is no fun at all, so proper acclimatization is essential if you are from a lower altitude. Here are some guidelines that will help: 1. Ascend slowly if possible. Spend at lease one night at a moderate altitude (50007000 feet) if possible. This will allow your body more time to adjust before moving higher. 2. Avoid caffeine and carbonated beverages for several days before making the ascent to altitude. These can cause dehydration, which will complicate altitude sickness. You should be drinking plenty of water (about 2 quarts per day minimum). Being well-hydrated is one of the best things to help you acclimatize. 3. Try to get plenty of sleep! Boots and Foot Care: Quality-hiking boots are essential to the enjoyment of any backpacking trip. Some brands to consider include La Sportiva, Merrel, Vasque, Montrail and Raichle. These boots are generally well suited for backpacking and carrying weight. One of the biggest problems people have is a blister on their feet, so boots should be purchased and worn until they are broken-in BEFORE arriving at camp. We suggest wearing them as often as possible - around the house, shopping or whenever. Hello Friends, Are you ready for one of the greatest experiences in your life?! I can’t wait; God is going to be doing some incredible things in our group and we’ll be challenged and stretched beyond anything you could have imagined. I can’t wait! The Schedule. We will meet here at the church Sun. July 8th at 6:00am. We will then embark on an Journey on our beloved school bus all the way to Texas Creek, Colorado and setup camp and hangout and begin adjusting to the ALTITUDE. Then Monday, we will begin our camp schedule for the week, which you can see below. Saturday, we will eat breakfast, spend some time together and pack up and then get our sack lunches and leaver around “noonish” and then drive to Goodland to spend the night. Sunday (15th) morning, we will enjoy a nice complimentary breakfast and then drive home to be back in Gardner by 6pm. Next, there are a few other details to mention. First off, we will stop to eat b-fast, lunch, and dinner Sunday night on the way. Monday morning through Saturday lunch will be out “beloved” camp food. On the way home, we will eat dinner Saturday night and lunch Sunday. If you want to eat a big b-fast before we leave and/or bring a sack lunch with you, please feel free; otherwise bring enough spending money. We will try to eat cheap, but plan on $5 $8/meal. You could eat big breakfasts and then just munch on snacks, but that probably depends on your eating habits. A word of Caution, do not drink a lot of CAFFEINATED drinks. We are going up high into the mountains and we don’t want you to get altitude sickness and/or bad headaches. Secondly, do note the stuff to bring!!! I would encourage you to pack VERY compactly. Bring layers of clothes, but think of wearing some items several times (come on, it’s not that gross – you’re in the mountains and we don’t have anyone to impress anyway). In all seriousness, try and keep it all in a “small” suitcase or backpack. We will be staying in our own tents the whole week, so consider how much stuff you want laying around you. You might also want to bring a swimsuit as we will be able to swim at the hotel and you might want one for rafting too. Girls, please bring a “modest” swimsuit (no bikinis – preferably a one-piece) and/or bring a dark shirt to wear over your swimsuit. Thanks! Next, do not bring electronics of any kind (including cd/mp3 players or video games), drugs/alcohol, tobacco, guns, knives, explosives, or weapons of mass destruction or anything else violating Philippians 4:8 – doing so will result in you being sent home at your expense. I especially want you to note to not bring mp3 players or cell phones. This is a trip about getting out of your comfort zone and “getting away”. I am not trying to be the “communication nazi”, but one of the purposes is for us to build community among our group and it won’t really matter for most of you; as it is so remote that most cell phones won’t work and you’re not going to have electricity to keep them charged anyway. In case of an emergency, you can contact the camp office and or call me on my cell phone at 785-893-1596, but I cannot guarantee availability. Finally, make sure and look at the altitude issues & work-out regiment!!! This is highly suggested and I would strongly encourage you to get some regular cardiovascular exercise starting NOW! It may seem silly or even unnecessary or like hard work, but trust me, it will make your camp experience a whole lot better!!! The camp itself is over 7000 ft high and literally “just walking around” will take your breath away and when we do the “Peak Ascent”, we’ll go over 13,000 ft high. It’s going to be awesome, but do prepare. For details, look at your camp info packet, as JourneyQuest has given more specifics to make your experience more enjoyable. So, start getting in better shape and we will have an incredible JOURNEY together. One final note. This should be obvious, but bring your Bible and notebook as we will have many times for you to “Encounter’ God in a variety of ways. This is going to be an awesome time in our group. I am already praying that you will meet God in a way that you never could have imagined and that our group will draw closer together and will bring this experience home and be real “difference makers” in our group and school this next year. Who hooo!!!!! I can’t wait – did I mention that already! Let’s Go!!!!!
