Research
Whichever technological stream you choose, you’ll work on real projects with real responsibility
from the start. BT will give you all the technical training you need to become a genuine expert in
your field: you’ll gain hands-on experience and exposure to advanced technologies and you’ll have
the chance to work alongside some of the best technical experts in the industry.
Over two years, you’ll contribute to some exciting projects while 20 days of structured training will
develop a combination of practical and soft skills. You’ll get connected to the different things that
make BT one of the best companies to work for in the world. Working with different markets,
services, products and customers, you’ll rise to different challenges every day.

Streams
Software Engineering
As part of our software engineering team you will have the chance to get involved in the complete
software development life cycle, including application design, development, testing and support.
Our product portfolio consists of real-time, high availability systems in the areas of voice, TV,
content delivery and mobility. You will utilise and enhance your skills in a team developing
applications on a variety of platforms including Linux, Windows and mobile platforms while using a
range of languages including well-established enterprise favourites such as Java and C++, as well as
contemporary dynamic languages such as Ruby.
BT’s software engineering community offers continuous professional development and learning,
ensuring your skills are kept up to date by way of opportunities such as participation in technical
conferences and master classes on a variety of new topics.
Programme specific personal requirements
To thrive in software engineering, you will need to:


Be passionate about writing good code and solving complex problems, following industry
best practices like test-driven development and continuous integration and testing.
Be technologically innovative, willing to learn, enjoy working as part of a larger team and be
excited by the challenge of achieving the seemingly impossible.
Network & IT systems Engineering
As part of the Network & IT systems Engineering team, you'll work alongside specialists in
communications, electronics and information technology, carrying out a range of development and
integration services for external customers. Your role could either focus on applied research or on
the technical aspects of medium-to-large IT and communications engineering projects or
programmes.
Developing bespoke IT systems will be your main responsibility and will involve the integration,
testing and delivery of new systems. You'll work mainly on IP networks, platforms and technologies
such as Linux, Unix, HP-Unix domain, Cisco, Dell, HP, Oracle Middleware and commercial workflow.
For our system development we use OOA and design techniques with a focus on UML, data systems
and data warehousing including business intelligence/data mining tools.
Programme specific personal requirements
Great systems engineers;



Need strong design and development skills.
Need a good working knowledge of IP networks, protocols and network components.
Are happy to be responsible for a number of different technical requirements and projects
at the same time.

Network and IT Operations Management
Graduates enrolled onto the Network and IT Operations Management programme will strive to
provide a service that is acknowledged as world class and a customer experience that sets a
standard to which others aspire.
You'll be responsible for commission and configuration on BT Operate Networks to facilitate the
effective delivery of service to customers which will involve anything from design changes through
to hardware and software upgrades.
You may also provide complex problem diagnosis and resolution for real-time major incidents,
liaising with vendors and customer/developer groups as required.
A key responsibility will be to proactively monitor and analyse network event information for early
identification of performance problems, making improvement recommendations to suppliers,
operations and platform teams as appropriate.
Research
The research you perform will shape the future of BT. A role in one of the best technology
companies in the world is challenging but will provide you with an understanding of the future
challenges facing a global company and the opportunity to develop world class problem solving and
leadership skills.
Your new ideas may lead to patents and you will be supported through the complex global process
of protecting the intellectual property resulting from your research. In some cases you will be
working with other research and technology organisations from Europe and globally on
collaborative projects.
Your main responsibility will be to create new technological solutions that address the key research
challenges faced by the BT businesses. As part of your role you will be expected to both develop and
contribute to the corpus of knowledge in your chosen field of expertise. As part of this, you will be
contributing to BT's world-class standing in telecommunications and ICT research and as your depth
of technical knowledge grows, you will be asked to provide consultancy to teams across the BT
businesses.
Programme specific personal requirements
Research graduates:
Need a broad range of technical skills and knowledge such as; Internet Architectures and Protocols,
Wireless and Mobility Solutions, Data Analytics and Modelling, Virtual Networks and the Cloud,
Artificial Intelligence Systems, Broadband Home Services, Social Networking and Interactive Media
Applications, Video and Content Solutions, Security and Privacy Methodologies and the
construction of new Business and Societal Models.

Entry Requirements
In addition to a demonstrable passion for technology, a strong technical background and a degree
or postgraduate qualification in computer science, electronics, electronic engineering, maths,
physics or an IT-related subject is also required.
Everyone hoping to join the Technology programme is required to have the following:




280+ UCAS points with a predicted or achieved 2.1. degree
280+ UCAS with a predicted or achieved 2.2 degree but with an additional postgraduate
qualification e.g. a Masters in a relevant subject
We also accept predicted or achieved 2:2 degrees if you have 320+ UCAS points
