GRADE 9 MATHEMATICS
CURRICULUM RENEWAL
Interdepartmental Meeting November 5th, 2009
SK Grade 9 Math Curriculum
www.curriculum.gov.sk.ca
Example: Outcome P9.4
Demonstrate understanding of polynomials (limited
to polynomials of degree less than or equal to 2)
including:
•
modeling
•
generalizing strategies for addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division
•
analyzing
•
relating to context
•
comparing for equivalency.
[C, CN, R, V]
Examples of Indicators
a) Model (concretely or pictorially) and describe
the relationship between x and x^2.
b) Represent polynomials concretely or
pictorially, and describe how the concrete or
pictorial model reflects the symbolic form
c) Write a polynomial for a given concrete or
pictorial representation.
Why the change?


Development of a Common Curriculum Framework:
Western & Northern Canadian Protocol (WNCP,
2006)
According to the WNCP, the critical components
students must encounter in a mathematics program
are: communication, connection, mental math and
estimation, problem solving, reasoning, technology,
& visualization.
Renewed Curriculum Research
WNCP: There is a posting of the research as well as
the results from the Post-Secondary, Business and
Industry survey that defined the pathways in the
new framework.

Brain Research


Connections in the brain are strengthened if they
are reinforced with a variety of stimuli (Sousa,
2006)
Learning is different from memorization. When
you learn, you cross-reference new information
to multiple other categories so that you can detect
new patterns & relationships (Nunley, 2003)
Brain Research


You are more likely to remember learning that
has an emotional connection for you (Sousa,
2006)
The more actively involved students are in the
learning, the more rehearsal they do of the
information, & the greater the retention and,
therefore, the learning (Sousa, 2006)

Questions & Concerns
Questions & Concerns
Not enough time . . . Should we be considering
extending the Math 90 course or offering
Yearlong Math 90?
No modified Math 90 – rather adaptations to
allow for students to be successful
Grade 9 Math Implementation
Thanks to the Math 90 teachers for all their
efforts and hard work!

Modified Math
In the future, modified math courses will be
developed. Surveys will be conducted to
figure out what math these students need.
The plan is to have a resource created
(for Grade 10 and 11 only).
In the meantime, continue offering Math 11
and 21 for students who legitimately
require a modified program.
Gr. 10 Math Courses for next Year

In Grade 10, students are strongly encouraged to
take both math courses: Workplace and
Apprenticeship Mathematics 10 & Foundations of
Mathematics and Pre-Calculus 10.
Saskatchewan Curriculum Documents for Grade 10
Math will be available February 2010
 In meantime, view the WNCP Common Curriculum

Final Thoughts
Division is committed to supporting the
curriculum renewal
 Importance of a positive attitude and consistent
message within our division
 As educators, we need to be competent and
confident with our delivery of the new
curriculum.
 We need to be positive when we are talking
with members of the community, parents and
students.
