Brown Bag Introduction Speech – 15 points – Due Tuesday!!!
Assignment: Choose 3 items: 1 to represent your past, 1 to represent your present, and 1 to
represent your possible future. Give a speech in which you explain the stories behind these
items and tie the items together to demonstrate your identity.
Speech Duration: 2-5 minutes.
Requirements: Items must fit in a bag of some type. The bag does not technically have to be a
brown bag. If the item is much too large, bring a picture of it instead.
This speech does not have to be memorized, but I suggest that you don’t write your thoughts
out word for word. You may certainly bring up notes though.
Format: The speech is informal, but you will still generally follow this outline:
-Introduction –
-Use an attention-grabbing statement, question or quotation to start things off.
-State your name.
-Make some kind of overall statement or reflection about yourself that will
reveal something about your identity and convince us to keep listening.
-Object #1
-Tell any stories behind that object and explain why that object is important and
significant. What does the object reveal about you? If it symbolizes something,
explain the symbolism.
-Object #2, follow same format as object #1
-Object #3, follow same format as object #3
-Conclusion-Tie the objects together somehow with an overall point.
-End with an interesting overall reflection or realization about your identity.
Hints:




Don’t write the speech down word for word and read from a piece of paper.
Choose objects that really are important to you and show something about you.
Be honest and be yourself as you speak.
Don’t end your speech with “That’s it” or “Yeah…Ok…I’m done.” BORING!

Speaking Skills: Use the notes we took yesterday to guide you in this category.
Organization: Follow the suggested format and clearly transition to and from each section.
Detail: Go in depth with your examples and stories to really illustrate your point.

Speaking
skills are
implemented,

always
effectively.
Speaker lacks
confidence
and speaking
skills, if

are not often
effective.
Speaker
seems
unprepared

Format is used;
3 items are

However,
Introduction &
Conclusion do
not grab
attention &
give closure.
Format is
used
somewhat
but
transitions
and
connections
between
ideas are
unclear.
Format is
difficult to

Almost no
clear

Elements
may be
missing
completely.
Stories & detail
are used;
however, more
explanation

Some detail
used, but not

Discussion of

limited. Much
more detail
could be used.
Almost no
