THE METAPHOR ESSAY
In the story The Metaphor by Budge Wilson, Charlotte the protagonist changes
drastically from grade seven to grade ten. In grade seven she loved her teacher Miss.Hancock,
but in grade ten she does not even want to talk to her because she has given into peer
pressure. Everybody in her grade thinks Ms.Hancock is weird so Charlotte does not want to be
caught talking to her. Then Charlotte regrets it later.
One character who impacts charlottes life is her flamboyant teacher Ms.Hancock.
Ms.Hancock inspires Charlotte to be creative by writing metaphors. Miss.Hancock would always
ask Charlotte if she was okay when she was feeling down and make her feel good. Also when
Miss.Hancock dies by jumping in front of a bus, Charlotte felt like it was all her fault. She felt
like it was all her fault. Charlotte felt like it was all her fault because she was extremely rude to
Miss.Hancock. Overall Miss.Hancock plays a big role in Charlotte’s life.
When Charlotte gets older she will have the character traits of her mother, the
antagonist. Charlotte will have the character traits of her mother because she lives with her.
When Charlotte is older she is most likely going to turn out like her mother because she lives
with her and her mother has been shaping her for years. Charlotte is more around her mother
then Miss.Hancock. If Charlotte is not around Miss.Hancock she is not going to turn out like her.
Charlotte is most defiantly going to turn out like her mother. When Charlotte is older she is
going to have all the character traits of her mother. The main reason why Charlotte is going to
turn out like her mother is because Miss.Hancock was not constantly around her like Charlottes
mother is continuously around her. As a result Charlotte is more influenced by her mom than
Miss.Hancock.
The Character that greatly influences Charlotte is her mother. One thing that Charlotte
learns from her mother is that appearance matters. In class Charlotte does not want to talk to
Miss.Hancock because she does not want people to make fun of her, so Charlotte gives into
peer pressure. Charlotte’s mother also teaches Charlotte to be a perfectionist. When there is
nothing to clean at Charlotte’s house Charlotte’s mother would tell Charlotte to clean up the
mess because she is a perfectionist. Also, Charlotte’s mother teaches Charlotte not to express
her feelings. Overtime Charlotte does not express her feelings because her mother tells her not
to. Overall Charlotte’s mother teaches Charlottes different character traits.
Ultimately, though both Charlotte’s mother and Miss.Hancock greatly impact Charlotte,
overall Charlotte’s mother will be more influential in shaping Charlotte as she grows into an
adult. Charlotte’s mother teaches her that appearances matter, to be a perfectionist, and to not
express her feelings. In the future Charlotte is going to be the same cruel and callous person as
her mother.
