PURPOSE
The purpose of the PNICU preparation for experiment 2 is to ensure that all materials needed for care have been disinfected and are readily accessible for the next experiment.
II SCOPE
This procedure provides instructions for the preparation of the PNICU. Some suggestions will have to be adapted depending on the facility being used.
III RESPONSIBILITIES
It is the responsibility of Metabolic Assessment Laboratory personnel to follow this procedure.
It is the responsibility of supervisory personnel to ensure compliance with this procedure and to train employees and students responsible for performing this procedure. Students will report accidents to the principal investigators immediately.

VIII.A. Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) – Standard Operating Procedure is a document that provides instructions for completing a specific task in the lab.
VIII.B. Metabolic Assessment Laboratory (MAL) – The Metabolic Assessment Laboratory is the laboratory that will use this SOP.
VIII.C. Piglet Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (PNICU) – The PNICU is a unit where the piglet is monitored by 24 hour care and routine check-up parameters using PNICU SOPs conducted by the MAL.
VIII.D. Piglet Facility — The Piglet Facility is comprised of three rooms: the PNICU used for piglet care; a surgery room used for surgical procedures; and a transition/entry room used by staff to prepare items for care or surgery and to transfer the piglet from surgery to care.

IX.A. The PNICU is the first room in the piglet facility to be prepared.
IX.A.1. Empty the room of all of the furniture. Use a hose sprayer filled with disinfectant detergent to thoroughly wash the ceiling, walls, and floor. Allow the detergent to remain on the surfaces for approximately 15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with copious amounts of water. Wipe the ceiling with a soft cloth and allow the walls and floor to drain and dry.
IX.A.2. Prepare the Piglet Incubators and Piglet Care Cart for each piglet, if needed, according to SOP# CP029.00. Refer to Figure 1 for picture of the incubators.
IX.A.3. Wash the surfaces of all furniture and other items with disinfectant detergent before bringing them into the cleaned PNICU.

IX.A.4. Prepare any needed cabinets or equipment according to their SOP.
IX.A.5. Place reminder signs as needed. For example:
IX.A.5.a. Place reminders signs of the duties during an experiment in the
PNICU.
IX.A.5.b. Place the piglet activity level description onto the walls using white tape.
IX.A.6. Designate and clean container for trash.
IX.A.7. Designate and clean container for laundry.
IX.A.8. Clean the humidifiers if needed. Fill the humidifiers with deionized H

IX.A.9. Maintain a room temperature appropriate for the piglet’s condition.
IX.A.10.Clean and place autoclaved heaters in room for use as needed.
IX.A.11.Clean and place the balance for weighing the piglets in the room as well as general experiment supplies into one of the PNICU cabinets.
IX.A.12.Clean and arrange the PNICU furniture as appropriate. For example:
IX.A.12.a. Place the blue supply chest against the right wall from the entrance.
IX.A.12.b. Place the stainless steel cart with balance in left corner closest to entrance.
IX.A.12.c. Place the tall stainless steel cart centered against the rear wall.
IX.A.12.d. Place one pig pen on both sides of the tall stainless steel cart against each side wall.
IX.A.12.e. Place one incubator on the side walls next to the pig pens.
IX.A.13.Check to make sure that there is an adequate supply of 95% oxygen 5% carbon dioxide in supply for later use.
