The aim of the program is to stimulate progress on fundamental scientific questions of major importance in mathematics, theoretical physics, and theoretical computer science. Grants of up to $2.5 million will be awarded in support of collaborative projects that address a mathematical or theoretical topic of fundamental scientific importance and create a novel area for exploration or provide a new direction for progress in an established field. Projects should have clearly defined initial activities and goals by which their progress and success can be measured, should involve outstanding researchers in a variety of career stages, and should be organized and managed in a manner engendering a high level of collaboration. Excellence of scientific leadership is one of the main criteria in the selection process, and support from the Simons Collaborations in MPS program should be seen as critical to the success of the project. Each collaboration must be led by a collaboration director who will determine the scientific agenda, coordinate the scientific activities of the other members, determine (in collaboration with the other members) the project’s scientific themes, and organize collaboration meetings and activities as appropriate, including a one-day annual conference at the foundation. The director will be the foundation’s main point of contact and will be responsible for coordinating all administrative deliverables. The director also will be responsible for monitoring the overall progress of the research effort and for deciding on research directions and personnel as the collaboration evolves. The collaboration director should hold a faculty, or equivalent, position at a U.S. or Canadian institution in a Ph.D. program. PIs must also hold a faculty or equivalent position at an educational institution in a Ph.D. program. There are no restrictions on the department and/or discipline of the director or PIs. The Alfa Fellowship Program is designed to address this problem by providing a new and exciting opportunity for young professionals from the U.S., UK, and Germany to live and work in Russia and develop a genuine knowledge of the country through individualized professional assignments. The annual program offers up to eighteen accomplished young Americans, Britons, and Germans the opportunity to complete a high-level professional development program in Russia. Over the course of the program, fellows complete work placements at leading institutions, attend professional seminars, and receive intensive language training. Key goals of the Alfa Fellowship Program are to expand networks of American, British, German, and Russian professionals; develop greater intercultural understanding; and advance U.S.-Russian, UK-Russian, and German-Russian relations. The fellowship provides a monthly stipend, accommodation, insurance, all program-related travel costs, language training in Russia, and private tutoring in the U.S., UK, or Germany. Alfa Fellows must have a demonstrated interest in Russian and European/Eurasian affairs, exceptional academic and professional credentials, proven personal initiative, and clear goals and expectations for their professional assignments. Fellows tend to be between the ages of 25 and 35 and have a graduate degree and professional experience in business, economics, journalism, law, public policy, or a related field. In addition, fellows must possess leadership potential and be active in community or public service. While Russian language skills vary, most fellows have studied Russian for at least two years at the postsecondary level. To be eligible, applicants must be a U.S., UK, or German citizen between the ages of 25 and 35 and should possess a graduate degree and at least two years of professional experience in business, economics, journalism, law, public policy, or a related field. Candidates without a graduate degree either completed or in progress must have an undergraduate degree and approximately five to six years of professional experience in their field. The program is funded by Alfa-Bank and is administered in the U.S., UK, and Germany by Cultural Vistas and in Moscow by the Fund for International Fellowships and Cultural Dialogue. The fellowship program is part of a larger effort by the Open Society Foundations' Criminal Justice Fund to reduce the destructive impact of current criminal justice policies on the lives of individuals, families, and communities in the U.S. by challenging the overreliance on incarceration and harsh punishment and ensuring a fair and equitable system of justice. Fellowships of up to $110,250 will be awarded in two categories: Advocacy Fellowships and Media Fellowships. Advocacy Fellowships: These eighteen-month grants fund outstanding individuals -- including lawyers, advocates, grassroots organizers, activist academics, and others with important perspectives – looking to initiate innovative policy advocacy projects at the local, state, or national level that will have a measurable impact on one or more of OSF's U.S. criminal justice priorities. Projects may range from litigation, to public education, to coalition-building, to grassroots mobilization, to policy-driven research. Fellows are expected to work full-time on their projects during the term of the fellowship. Fellows are expected to work full-time on their projects during the term of the fellowship. Projects can begin in either the spring or fall of 2015. The program strongly encourages applications for projects that demonstrate a clear understanding of the intersection of criminal justice issues with the particular needs of low-income communities; communities of color; immigrants, gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people; women and children; and those disproportionately affected by harsh criminal justice policies; as well as applications for projects that cut across various criminal justice fields and related sectors such as education, health and mental health, housing, and employment. In addition, the program particularly welcomes applications from individuals directly affected by, or with significant direct personal experience with, the policies, practices, and systems their projects seek to address (e.g., applicants who have themselves been incarcerated or who have a family member or loved one who has been incarcerated and whose fellowship project emerges from that experience).
