Wilkes County Schools Curriculum Director Language Arts/Social Studies 6-12 NATURE OF WORK The curriculum instructional director is one whose primary concern is the improvement of learning opportunities through the provision of instructional leadership. The director has the role of decisionmaker, consultant, and specialist in advising administrators, teachers, and other professional personnel. The curriculum instructional director serves as a member of the instructional services staff charged with the responsibility for planning, implementing, and evaluating an educational program relevant to the needs of the student population in the Wilkes County School System. The curriculum director plans for and supervises curriculum development and implementation. The director also provides advice and counsel for teachers and principals on matters pertaining to instruction along with planning and implementing staff developmental programs. Under limited supervision, performs a variety of supervisory and administrative tasks in monitoring and assisting the programs of Language Arts and Social Studies, Grades 6-12. Curriculum director directs and supervises programs and services for students in language arts and social studies education. The curriculum director monitors the overall effectiveness of programs and ensures all are implemented within federal, state and local regulations. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Directs the planning, development, field-testing and evaluation of curriculum; Directs the publication and provision of division-wide instructional-related staff development; Provides in-service training designed to support implementation of newly developed curricula; Supervises preparation of curricular content for instructional materials; Supervises development of instructional guidelines, policies, and regulations; Interprets statutes and regulations for principals and teachers; Provided assistance in the interpretation of data to administrators and teachers; Works closely with the Director of Accountability as pertains to EOC and EOG results; Works closely with the textbook adoption process; Works in conjunction with the State Department of Public Instruction, the Office of Civil Rights, and various other agencies to meet the needs of students; Regularly attends meetings of instructional services team, middle school principals council, high school principals council, monthly principals meetings and any other deemed necessary; Works with teachers and staff to ensure curriculum is aligned with North Carolina Standard Course of Study and/or Essential Standards and is achieving goals; Reviews current curriculum and recommends changes based on performance data; Reviews EVASS information; Maintains good relationships with students, staff, parents and community members; Exhibits strong leadership skills; Exhibits a professional and collegial approach to educational programs. Completes random moment in time studies as required by MAC program guidelines. MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE Master’s degree in administration or the commitment to attain within a specified time period. Ability to work constructively within a team environment, as well as the ability to communicate effectively with administrators, principals, teachers, students and parents. Exhibits a broad knowledge of the principles and practices of school administration and of current educational trends in curriculum and instruction. Demonstrates an ability to manage fiscal, physical and human resources to successfully carry out the function and programs of the office. Possesses the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Must be able to multi-task. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Works collaboratively with middle and high school coordinators and administrators. Initiates and oversees curricular and instructional programs designed to improve instruction and student achievement in middle and high schools. Coordinates and integrates the 6-12 curriculum and instructional programs in the areas of language arts and social students with principals, department heads, team leaders and other directors with principals and curriculum specialists. Coordinates professional development for 6-12 content areas on district approved days. Works towards developing an improved understanding of adolescents’ educational needs on the part of teachers, administrators, and parents. Designs professional development opportunities that align with the district’s mission and goals. Initiates and maintains effective liaison with other school districts and with independent schools in order to keep abreast of new educational development and ideas. Stays abreast of current educational developments and the literature; participates in the affairs of state and national professional societies. Maintains contact with specific content area state supervisors. Assists in developing strategic plans for improving student achievement. Leads the process of creating and revision of curriculum guides that are inclusive of pacing, scope and sequence, instructional strategies, sample assessment items, aligned resources and linkage to North Carolina Standard Course of Study and/or Essential Standards. Assists principals with school-based staff development plans. Maintains open communication with all levels of school system hierarchy; serves as liaison between schools and the various departments within the Central Office; maintains regular contact with other directors to exchange ideas, share information and develop plans. Serves as a member of the district-wide planning teams. Performs other related work as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge of federal, state, and local policies and procedures as pertain to language arts and social studies in grades sixth through twelfth. Knowledge of Wilkes County Schools Board of Education Policies and Procedures. Knowledge of the organizational and communication channels of Wilkes County Schools. Knowledge of the ethical guidelines applicable to the position as outlined by professional organizations and/or federal state and local laws, rules and regulations. Knowledge of the current literature, trends, methods of implementation and delivery in the areas of language arts and social studies grades 6-12. Knowledge of the principles of supervision, organization and administration. Knowledge of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and/or North Carolina Essential Standards. Skill in team building. Skills in oral and written communication. Competent computer skills. Ability to plan, develop, implement and evaluate large programs. Ability to assess the needs of children. Ability to analyze test data to implement changes necessary for student growth and development. Ability to develop and implement policies, procedures and standards within the curriculum areas. Ability to maintain complete and accurate records and statistics and to develop meaning feedback. Ability to articulate necessary communications to large groups of people. Ability to professionally interact with all members of the community. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all stakeholders.
