PRACTICAL INFORMATION NOTE

ABOUT MOZAMBIQUE
Mozambique received its independence from the Portugal in 1975. Its first president was
Samora Machel who ruled the country until 1986. It is currently President is Filipe Jacinto
Nyusi, elected on October 15, 2014. It has a population of about 24 million people.
Mozambique is a country in Southeast Africa bordered by the Indian Ocean to the
east, Tanzania to the north, Malawi and Zambia to the northwest, Zimbabwe to the west,
and Swaziland and South Africa to the southwest. It is separated from Madagascar by
the Mozambique Channel to the east. The capital and largest city is Maputo.

WEATHER
The weather in March is generally warm. March falls within the rainy season and the
evenings are cool. It is advisable to bring light clothes, light jumpers for the evenings and an
umbrella.

LANGUAGE
Official language for communication is Portuguese while the local language of Vilankulo is
Bitonga.
4.0
CURRENCY
The unit of the currency is the Meticais (MZN) depending on the market forces but currently
the exchange rate for major currencies to the MZN is as detailed below:

PAYMENTS
Credit and debit cards are accepted in major hotels and banks. Travelers’ cheques are also
widely accepted and exchanged. It is advisable to take some hard currency in US Dollar or

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
A valid passport, with at least six months to expiry date from intended exit date, is required to
enter Mozambique. Visas are not obtainable at points of entry but must be organized prior to
travelling through the nearest Mozambican Embassy or High Commission. Please note that
all SADC-members do not require a visa to Mozambique.

WATER AND ELECTRICITY
The country sometimes experiences water and electricity problems; however, most hotels and
lodges will have water reservoirs and generators. The tap water is safe enough to drink, but
bottled water is readily available for those who prefer to drink bottled water.
Available at Vilankulo are the standard British square electricity plugs with a voltage supply
of 240 V / 50 Hz.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS
The main service providers for mobile services are Moçambique Celular (Mcel), Vodacom,
Movitel and Access Communications Limited with good 3G and 3.4 signal coverage in the
major cities.

RELIGION
Mozambique is predominantly a Christian country with Christians coming from the
mainstream churches (Roman Catholic, Anglican, God Assembly, Old Apostolic Church) and
the Pentecostal churches. There is also a good number of Muslims especially in most of the
districts in the north part of the country.

SAFETY
Mozambique is a very peaceful country and considered safe for travel with friendly people all
over the country. However, usual precautions should always be taken i.e. avoid travelling
with large sums of money and always try not to be isolated especially when travelling at
night.

BUSINESS HOURS
from 8:00 hrs to 13:00 hrs on Saturday. However, most banks do operate from 08:00 hrs –
15:00 hrs from Monday to Friday and from 08:00 hrs – 12:00 hrs on Saturdays. Most
businesses are closed on Sundays as it is a prayer day for most churches.
