Walk A Mile is Coming to Owen Sound
The Women’s Centre and Women’s House are raising funds together for the shelters in Owen Sound
and Kincardine. These women’s organizations are literally asking men to walk one mile in women’s
high-heeled shoes.
This high profile fundraiser has been “walking” all over the province and this year on June 9 th will be
in the city of Owen Sound. Men will champion to end woman abuse and sexual violence by walking
the walk and talking the talk by asking friends, co-workers, their workplaces and family to sponsor
them with pledges. Men are partnering with women to increase awareness to end the abuse while
raising much needed funds for their local shelters.
On June 9th everyone is invited to the Heritage Place Shopping Centre from 11:00am to 1:00pm to
have some fun while watching these courageous men walk a mile in high heels.
The Executive Directors Patty Kelly and Casey Weichert agree that this is a great fundraiser as there
is lots of opportunity to raise awareness while supporting the shelters. The first event is in Owen
Sound but the Directors have great aspirations that this event will be “walking” in your local
community next year.
These women know it is not easy to walk in high heels and it is not easy for some to talk about
gender related violence and sexual abuse. It's critical to open communication about sexualized
violence. Unfortunately, it's difficult to get people talking.
Every man who walks and every pledge he receives is a show of community support to end woman
abuse and violence.
Abuse is not just a woman’s issue let’s get walking and talking here in Grey Bruce.
