Lab 1
Notes:




I expect you to use the shortcut keys you learned last week, in particular Alt + Tab to switch
between application and Alt + F4 to close application.
I want you to show formatting marks for the document.
I want you to use nonbreaking spaces when writing number and units, such as “20 years”.
Use page breaks between sections (such as computer info, translations).
Lab Requirements
1. Find out how much Hard Drive space your computer has (used and total). You can do this by
opening the properties for C (or any other hard drive letter).
2. Open a new word document and create 2 numbered lists (a list for each number: used and
total space on hard drive), such as the one below, with the conversions to megabytes,
kilobytes, byte and bits. Use the Windows calculator (Start, All Programs, Accessories,
Calculator), NOT an online converter, to do the calculations. Use the table below to do the
calculations.
3. Change the list styles of two of the lists to other formats (Roman numerals, letters, …)
4. Change the spacing to 1.5 lines or double.
5. Change the font all three lists to some funky fonts, like Monotype Corsiva or Harlow Solid
Italic (but make sure the text is still readable) and adjust the size if needed (if they’re too
small or large).
6. Use AutoCorrect to change one of the units (kilobytes for example) from its acronym (KB).
So basically what I want is for you to type KB (or MB) and have Word change it to kilobytes
(or megabytes) automatically. You will need to demonstrate this at the end of the lab.
My computer’s hard drive used space is:
1.
2.
3.
4.
XXXXX megabytes
XXXXX kilobytes
XXXXX bytes
XXXXX bits
1 gigabyte (GB)
1 megabyte (MB)
1 kilobyte (KB)
1 byte (B)
1024 megabytes (MB)
1024 kilobytes (KB)
1024 bytes (B)
8 bits (b)
Did you know that you can use Google (http://translate.google.com/) to translate sentences or
paragraphs from one language to another?
Adrian Maries (Adapted from Ryan Moore)





Write a sentence that has at least 7-8 words.
Use Google Translate to translate it into a language that uses a Latin alphabet (such as English).
Some examples are Spanish, French, German, …
Then translate it into two languages that use a different alphabet, languages like Russian, Thai,
Chinese, Hebrew… Make sure that Word can translate the languages you choose.
Use Word to translate one of the words in the middle of the sentence to English.
Arrange the 4 sentences in a bulleted list and customize the bullets to a format you like
(character or image)
Also
1. Add a title page to the document with a title that spans over at least two rows. Use a manual
line break at the end of the first row. Center the title vertically on the page without pressing
Enter.
2. Open header of the document and insert the current time. Add a few words to indicate where
the local time is (city, country). Then use Google to find out the time in two other cities outside
North America and on two different continents. This can be done using a command such as
“time Pittsburgh”. For larger cities you should get the result immediately, while, for smaller
cities, you’ll need to navigate to the first provided link. Add them, on different lines, to the
header.
3. Record a macro to change a few (at least 3) properties of a font. They can be size, emphasis,
color, background color, effects (shadow, strikethrough, …). You will need to demonstrate this at
the end of the lab.
4. Change the document properties to add your name to the author field and a few words to the
title field.
5. Call me over to look at your lab and I'll give you credit.
