The Clinton High School Athletes Hall of Fame committee has finalized the process for
the inaugural class of the Clinton High School Athletes Hall of Fame. This is
culmination of an eighteen month process. The Committee is pleased to announce the
following members:
1. Hank Dihlman – Contributor
Hank was a 1930 graduate of Mason City High School. He started at KROS
radio in 1942. After a stint in the army during World War II, he returned to KROS
and did the play by play of Clinton High School football and Basketball for over
40 years with his last broadcast coming in March 1986. Hank also did the
broadcast of minor league baseball in Clinton for 26 years and served as the
General Manager of the station from 1976 until his retirement in 1987.
2. Richard Farwell – Athlete/Contributor
Dick is a 1954 graduate of Clinton high School who still holds single game and
season scoring records in basketball. He was elected to the Iowa High School
basketball Hall of Fame in 1995. After high school Dick lettered in basketball and
golf at Iowa State University. He has also served as the president of the Clinton
High School Athletic Booster Club for over thirty years.
3. Bill Holmstrom – Contributor
Bill was the Athletic Director at Clinton High School from 1969 – 1992. He was
very active in the state and national Athletic Director Organization. He was voted
the National Athletic Director of the Year in 1992 as well as being selected to the
National Athletic Director Hall of Fame in 1992.
4. Bill Holsclaw – Coach
Bill was a long time teacher and coach at CHS who has won 7 state
championships in cross country and track and field. He was selected state coach
of the year six times during his career. He was elected to the Iowa Track Coach
Hall of Fame in 1987.
5. Howard Judd – Coach
Howard served as CHS Swimming Coach for thirty-five years. He won 11 state
championships and finished as the state runner-up fifteen times. He coached 54
swimmers who earned All-American honors. His 1945 team was selected the #1
high School team in the nation. He was inducted into the Iowa High School
Swimming Hall of Fame in 1979.
6. Dan Knight – Athlete
Dan is a 1987 graduate of Clinton High School. He was at that time the seventh
wrestler in the state of Iowa to finish as a four time state champion. His high
school record was 128-0. After high school, Dan earned All-American honors at
Iowa State University. He currently serves as the Head Wrestling Coach at
Bettendorf High School.
7. Bob Lueders – Coach
Bob was a 1946 graduate of Clinton High School where he was a three sport
athlete, earning a football scholarship to Bradley University. In 1963 he became
the Head Wrestling Coach at Clinton High School. During his career he won 294
dual meets, coached individuals to fifteen state championships, and won the
state team championship in 1987. He is also a member of the Bradley University
Hall of Fame and the Iowa High School Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame.
8. Max Lynn – Coach/Contributor
Max was a long time teacher, coach and administrator at CHS. He served as
Head Football Coach from 1944-1953 winning over 56% of his games. He also
served as Clinton High School Athletic Director until his retirement in 1969.
9. Gary Morris – Athlete
Gary was a 1955 graduate of Clinton High School who was a six time high school
All-American. After high school, he was a member of the University of Iowa swim
team where he was a seven time All-American, three time Big Ten Champion
and won an NCAA Championship in the 50 yard freestyle in 1958. He also
qualified for the 1956 Olympic Trials. He was elected to the Iowa High School
Swimming Hall of Fame in 1979 and the University of Iowa Hall of Fame in 2008
10. Carl Nelson – Athlete
Carl was a 1933 graduate of Clinton High School, a track athlete who still holds
the school record in the 100 & 200 meter dash that were set in 1933. His time of
9.5 in the 100 yard dash in 1933 was second only to the Jesse Owens time of
9.4. Carl’s time remained the second fastest time for a high school student until
1941.
11. Ken Ploen – Athlete
A 1953 graduate of Clinton High School, Ken was an all-state athlete in 3 sports
in high school. In 1956, he became the starting quarterback for the University of
Iowa and led the Hawkeyes to victory in the 1957 Rose Bowl. After college, Ken
played professionally in the Canadian Football league where he led his team to
four championships. He is a member of the Canadian football Hall of Fame,
Manitoba Sports hall of Fame, Rose Bowl Hall of Fame, and the University of
Iowa Hall of Fame.
12. Dan Roushar – Athlete
A 1979 graduate of Clinton High School, Dan was an all-state selection in both
football and basketball. After high school, Dan attended Northern Illinois
University where he played quarterback. After college, he held numerous college
coaching positions including offensive coordinator at Michigan State University.
He is currently the running back coach for the New Orleans Saints.
13. Fred “Duke” Slater – Athlete
Duke moved to Clinton at the age of 13 in 1911. He played football for Clinton
High School and led them to Iowa State championship games vs. West Des
Moines High School in 1914. After graduation, he attended the University of
Iowa and was a four year lettermen. He was a three All Big Ten selection and a
first team All-American in 1921. After graduation from Iowa, he played
professional football for ten years. During that time he also earned his law
degree from Iowa. In 1948, he was elected as a Municipal Court Judge in
Chicago. He is also a member of the University of Iowa and College Football
Hall of Fame.
14. Chuck Vogt – Athlete
A 1953 graduate of Clinton High School, Chuck was an outstanding basketball
player for the River Kings. As a senior, he led the conference in scoring, was
part of a state tournament team and was voted 2nd team All-State. After high
school, Chuck attended Iowa State University where he was a three year starter
and co-captain during the 1956-57 seasons. Chuck was elected to the Iowa High
School Basketball Hall of Fame in 1984.
