The name change from English for Information Systems to English for New Media will better
represent the focus of the revised program on studying and creating multimodal texts using everchanging publishing and communications technologies.
The specializations of Business and Computer Programming are seldom used anymore. The
Desktop Publishing specialization is being incorporated into the Professional and Technical
Communication major, and the Text Analysis specialization into this program. Electives are being
increased to 18, to facilitate students’ completing a minor of their choice.
As computer and communication technologies change, the EIS program at DSU needs to change
to continue to fulfill the mission of the university and to prepare graduates for the challenges they
will face in future education or career opportunities. The aim of this program modification is to
better prepare students to use traditional as well as emerging computer technologies to study and
create multimedia texts using and anticipating ever-changing publishing and communications
technologies. In addition, the modification responds to the emphasis on informatics at DSU by
emphasizing the application of computer text analysis as well as the creation of multimedia
publications using database storage of multimedia files.
Multimedia positions in new and emerging mass communication niches
Public relations
Graduate study
Publishing in emerging technologies
Communications consulting
Variety of careers in government, business and retail which require a broad
base of preparation
Information technology generalist (money.cnn.com: “young and restless,
top 20 jobs”)
This program will promote a creative problem solving approach that is increasingly important for
many of these careers – as publishing and communication technologies change, these students
will be prepared for the current technologies and to adapt to new technologies.
