Lancaster, PA Red Rose Chapter of ONS RED ROSE RAP Spring 2013 Issue 10 Letter from the President Spring is here with all of its beauty and it is hard to believe that we are coming up on the last meeting before summer break. It has been such a great few months working with you and getting to know you better. I have said it before but it is worth repeating. We have a small but amazing chapter and it is all due to the dedication of the nurses who belong to it! Lancaster Red Rose has started 2013 with a bang, having great speakers and topics from nutrition to myeloma and continues with the May meeting on the 21st with a short discussion on Stivarga and then an evening to celebrate Oncology Nursing Month. We have sent 3 of our members to Congress this past April and we are proud of our vice president, Katrina Fetter who was a speaker at Congress this year! Congratulations Katrina! Through the efforts of Merrily Dombrowski, Lancaster Red Rose Chapter is helping to organize this year’s “Best of ONS” being held the weekend of May 18th in Philadelphia. We have begun to help our less fortunate patients who are in need of immediate rides to office visits, treatments or tests with our transportation program through Yellow Cab. We have met some wonderful nurses not only from Lancaster County but from York and Daulphin counties and have welcomed new members to our chapter. This summer, Katrina Fetter and I will be attending the ONS Leadership weekend in Pittsburgh. After a short summer break we will resume our monthly schedule with our August meeting at Annie Bailey’s and a full Fall schedule leading up to our big event which is the Roundtable in November. I look forward to seeing even more of you at these meetings and hopefully signing more of you up as full members. It is only with your involvement that we can keep all of this great work going. I thank all of you for all of your support and dedication not only to Lancaster Red Rose Chapter but to each of our dear patients in Lancaster County that count on us to help them. You truly are all great nurses and I feel so lucky to know you! Washington DC was beautiful, and so was the weather. National ONS Congress lasts from Wednesday-Saturday and includes countless opportunities for continuing education, inter-professional networking and sight-seeing on the town. This year did not disappoint. There were a lot of sessions about certification, symptom management, and alternative medicine this year. Opening ceremonies included motivational singing as well as a lecture on the impact of technology and the future of health care. The opportunity to attend Congress humbles you when you see the thousands of other oncology nurses in attendance. There is laughter, tears, and a lot of learning. My most memorable moment at this year’s Congress was the opportunity to speak at a precongress session on Wednesday about compassion fatigue. The presentation was extremely successful and got a lot of good feedback from attendees who were anxious to go back to their organizations to combat compassion fatigue. It was definitely the most exciting thing I have been able to be a part of so far in my nursing career!! I encourage everyone who is passionate about oncology nursing to try to attend Congress at least once in their career. It is worth it!! -Katrina Fetter BSN, RN, OCN “One highlight for me was the ONS opening ceremony. It was amazing to see all the different people coming from ALL over the world and uniting in the special interest area of oncology nursing. It is so special and such a hard and emotional field that you could tell, everyone wanted to be there and everyone was happy to be learning more to better themselves for their patients. Another highlight of congress was hearing Katrina speak about compassion fatigue and how it has affected people, and ways to prevent compassion fatigue.” – Cally Adams BSN, RN, OCN Join our Lancaster Red Rose ONS Chapter Team for the Light the Night Walk at Clipper Magazine Stadium on Saturday, October 5th.
