TUTOR VACANCY: Literacy Tutor
Closing date for applications 5pm on the 5th July 2013
General Information
The Mary Ward Centre offers high quality adult education and community services, covering the
areas of Digital Media, Computing & IT, Business and Management, English and Maths, Languages,
Humanities and Social Sciences, Health and Social Care, Writing and Publishing, Visual Arts, Music and
Singing. In 2004 it was awarded Beacon College status by the DfES, and was the first adult education
college in the country to have this distinction.
The Centre’s main premises at 42 Queen Square consist of two interconnecting Grade II listed
Georgian houses overlooking the Square. The Centre also holds classes in a second, modern building
at 10 Great Turnstile. The atmosphere at both buildings is relaxed and friendly but purposeful.
Students come from all walks of life, both local and London wide (and beyond). Their education, work
and life experience varies enormously. Some students do not have English as their first language.
Information about the vacancy
The Centre requires a tutor to teach adult literacy at Entry Level 3. The tutor would also act as cover
for our other literacy courses.
For the academic year 2013-14, the E3 literacy course is on Mondays and Thursdays 1-3pm.
Successful candidates will have a Skills for Life (Literacy) qualification at level 5 or above, plus
substantial experience of teaching ESOL in an adult education context.
The literacy tutor will often work with SLDD and dyslexic students. Experience in this area is a
requirement, and an SLDD or a dyslexia qualification is desirable although not essential. At the
Centre we work with a range of special needs, including mental ill-health. Teaching experience in the
sympathetic and constructive support of students with multiple difficulties is desirable.
There is a 12 months’ probationary period for all new teachers at the Mary Ward Centre.
