WISENT
IN THE
MIROSŁAWIEC BIOREGION
Conference aim:
The Conference would be the twelfth in the cycle of international meetings
concerning the wisent. The conference will be held in Wałcz, in the Central Sports
Centre - Olympic Preparation Centre. The host will be the commune Mirosławiec in
the district of Wałcz. There lives E. bison free-living herd - one unit of the West
Pomerania population. The commune is very proud of the presence of E. bison in its
area and tries very hard to propagate knowledge about those animals as widely as
possible. In Mirosławiec takes place the Festival of European bison, which is
initiative of Mr. Piotr Pawlik, the mayor of the city. The mayor makes a lot to
ensure the E. bison the feeling of the well-being and safety. At every opportunity,
he says: I would like E. bison were an emblem of the region and that everyone
would be able to link in his mind this species with Mirosławiec Bioregion.
Mr. Olgierd Geblewicz Western Pomerania Marshal and Mr. Piotr Świderski Mayor
of the Commune Wałcz are also interested to take patronage of our conference.
In the West Pomeranian province the E. bison are kept in the exhibition enclosure
in Międzyzdroje, and free-living herd live in the area of Mirosławiec and Drawsko.
The free-living herd of E. bison, also called West Pomeranian herd, was created in
February 1980, by prof. Ryszard Graczyk, head of the Department of Zoology,
Agriculture University in Poznan. The founders of the herd were four bulls and
four cows of E. bison from the Bialowieza Forest. Currently, the West Pomeranian
Society of Nature takes care of the herd of 110 individuals.
Since this year the new exhibition enclosure is open in Jabłonowo.
The visiting of enclosure is a part of our conference plan, beyond the main aim,
which is the exchange of experiences and discussion on the current problems of
conservation and breeding of wisents.
Program:
September 3rd is predicted for arrival and ice-breaking activities in the evening.
On Thursday (4.09) we plan session in the conference room of the Central Olympic
Preparation Centre, and for the next day – Friday (5.09), there are scheduled
session as well as field trip to the wisent exhibition enclosure in Jabłonowo.
On September 6th, we are planning a trip to German town – Prätenow, located on
the Uznam island. In this town, located about 14 kilometers away from Świnoujście
(going through the border crossing Garz), there was created the enclosure of
European bison (Wisentgehege). The enclosure was established in 2004 started
with four Lowland E. bison. Animals predicted for the beginning of the breeding,
were transported to the Uznam island from the enclosure located in Wolin
National Park.
We invite you to present results of projects and your experiences as oral
presentation: “long” (ca. 10-15 min) or “short” (ca. 5-10 min.). Because of the
simultaneous translation of the conference, both types of presented speeches,
should be prepared in electronic version.
We also would like to encourage you to publish papers or reports in the seventh
number of „European Bison Conservation Newsletter”. Papers published in this
journal will be reviewed. All details on papers' preparation are given at The

Cost and place
The conference will be placed in The Central Sports Centre – Olympic Preparation
Centre in Wałcz,

The conference fee for EBFS members will be ca. 350 PLN and for other people
400 PLN. The fee will cover:
- conference materials,
- food service (supper on September 3rd, whole service on 4th and 5th of
September)
- field trip (exhibition enclosure in Jabłonowo).
Accommodation costs are covered separately and will amount to ca. 90 - 140 PLN
per person per day (payable at the hotel).
Conference participants will be accommodated in the Central Olympic Preparation
Centre (single, double and triple rooms).
The costs of the trip to Prätenow are also covered separately. The fee depends on
the number of members of the conference interested in trip (the cost of renting
the bus). The fees will be given after the initial declaration of interested
individuals (deadline for declaration: April 30th).
The individuals interested in participation in the trip will be asked for making the
payments to the 1st of July 2014
