Texas Bison Fun Facts ~ All 50 states in the USA have bison herds and ranches. ~ Texas has more bison herds and ranches than any other state. ~ Texas had one of the first bison ranches in the country in 1894. ~ There have been bison being ranch raised in Texas now for 119 years. ~ Charles Goodnight, bison rancher, cattle rancher and Texas Ranger from the Texas Panhandle was the one who helped save the bison from extinction in 1894 and started that first bison ranch in 1894 in the Panhandle. ~ In the State of Texas the first week of May has been for the past 5 years and for the next 10 years has been Proclaimed “Texas Bison Week” by the State of Texas. ~ Our North American Bison, Icon of The Plains, may soon become our National Mammal and is already being honored with National Bison Day the first weekend in November. You ~ Bison Bulls or males can easily weigh 2,000 pounds ( 1 ton) and some reach over 2,600 pounds! ~ Female Bison are also called cows or heifers and can have babies past 25 years old and can live to 30 years or more. ~ The Texas Bison Association is working to create an approved curriculum for FFA students for ranching Bison. We have had a booth at the past three FFA State Conventions. Students are very excited about becoming Bison Ranchers.
