RECORD BOOK
BY:
Replacement Heifer Record Books
2015-2016
Record books should be used to record all expenses relating to your replacement
heifer project beginning at the first validation date and ending at the second
validation, this includes the purchase cost of the heifers. The record book should
be turned in to ______________________, at the time of show check in. The
record book may be typed or hand written. Record books will not affect the final
order of placing in the replacement heifer show but will count towards the Jr.,
Intermediate and Sr. Stockman awards. Record books will be judged by an
impartial judge. Scoring will be based on the accuracy of the record keeping,
organization of records, completeness of records and legibility of documentation.
Record books should be returned as they were received. Additional records may
be included such as receipts, vaccination or breeding records. Each student
showing replacement heifers MUST turn in a record book. Record books must be
signed prior to turn in. Completed record books should be turned in as they were
received and in the original binding to insure fast and accurate judging and scoring.

2 heifers constitute a pen. Only 2 or 3 heifers will be eligible to be shown. Each pen may not exceed 3 heifers per
project. The exhibitor must own all heifers. There will be no family entries. Class will be open to commercial or
registered heifers. No additional points for registered heifers. Registration transfer paperwork to be provided at
final weigh in.
Heifers must be weighed and tagged at first validation. First validation schedule Sept. 19, 2015 at No Name Cattle
Company in Bells Texas from 8am -12pm. Entry fees of $35 per pen, 2-4 pens $30 per pen & 5 or more pens $25
per pen are due at first validation weigh in. Exhibitors must provide proof of calf hood vaccination including
brucellosis.
Pens of heifers must weigh a minimum of 400 lbs each. Heifers not meeting the minimum weight requirement will
be sifted.
There will be 2 Divisions. One for open heifers & one for bred heifers. Each heifer has to have been vet checked
within 2 weeks of the 2nd validation to provide proof of pregnancy. Open heifers will show against open heifers in
division and bred heifers show against bred heifers in division. NOTE: If a heifer has calved before the second
validation she may show with calf at side and will be shown in the bred division. She must still comply with the
minimum daily gain requirement to receive the points for daily gains. If any 1 heifer in a pen is bred, the entire pen
will show in the bred division. Each division will have 1st and 2nd place. Overall there will be Grand Champion and
Reserve Champion picked from the total show of heifers. (Example: Grand and reserve may come from either or
both divisions based on the judges placing overall)
Animals may be grazed or fed, and will be judged as replacement heifers. No nurse cows will be allowed. Each
heifer is expected to gain an average of 1 pound(s) per day from 1st weigh in until 2nd weigh in. Any pens not
meeting 1 pound (s) /day average will receive 0 points for weight gain. Students will be instructed on the
calculations for target daily gains for each set of heifers. For each pen that meets the target daily gain a bonus of
25 points will be added.
Final weigh in date February 27, 2016 (161 days) at No Name Cattle Company in Bells Texas 8am – 12pm.
Exhibitors must provide reproductive certification and record book at the time of weigh in.
If hair is clipped/torched, it should be done at least 30 days prior to last validation. Heifers should not look “too
fresh” on show/sale day.
Livestock show check in Wednesday March 2, 2016. Pens must be in place by 11am. Heifers will be penned
immediately upon arrival. Show at 3pm. Auction will be held Friday March 4 at 1030am. Animals will be
released once sale is complete and buyers have settled with the livestock office.
It is the responsibility of each exhibitor to clean his/her pen and alley daily. Each exhibitor is responsible for
getting his or her pens ready before check in day. The chairmen will assign pen numbers prior to check in. Items
allowed for display are: Exhibitor sign (name & 4-H group/FFA Chapter) Breeder & Pen #. Feed & water
pans/buckets must be removed after use. No bedding is allowed. Cleanliness of pens will be judged by a random
committee and points (up to 20 points) will be awarded counting towards stockman award.
Heifer judging scores, reproduction certificate and weight gain verification, will affect the final placing. Record
book scoring, participation points and interview will determine the Jr., Intermediate and Sr. Stockman award. Jr.
Stockman students will be between 8 and 11 years old, Intermediate Stockman 12-14 and Sr. Stockman students
will be between 15 and 19 years old. Tie breaker will be Stockman points, then placing points, then closest to
Grand Champion Pen.
Two (2) individuals that are operators in the cow calf industry will perform judging. Judges will be sought that
have no preference to any exhibitor. Each judge will score each pen of heifers. There will be a student’s interview
on Saturday of the final weigh in for the Record books and questions. This will go towards the Stockman award.
Judges should make every effort not to score an exhibitor with the same score to avoid a tie. *Judges score sheet to
be included with the rules.
All pens of Heifers are required to sell. If an animal(s) is lost and the number of heifers falls below 2, the exhibitor
is not eligible to compete for Grand or Reserve in the show, but will be allowed to interview and sell their
remaining heifer. The floor price will be established prior to show based on the Durant Livestock Sale results
Thursday March 3, 2016. This floor price will be the minimum pricing established for the auction. No pens will
sell for less than this floor price.
Pens will be sold as pens. No single animal will sell with the exception of Rule# 12.
14. Pens will be awarded 1st and 2nd Bred Division, 1st and 2nd Open Division, Grand Champion Overall and Reserve
Grand Champion Overall followed by third place thru the final number of exhibits. Grand and Reserve will receive
buckles. Jr., Inter. and Sr. Stockman winners will receive awards.
15. There will be Field Days throughout the year. These will count as participation point that will go toward the
Stockman for each age division. These will be announced as they are scheduled. The first field day will be the 1st
validation of heifers September 19th, 2015 at No Name Cattle Company in Bells, Texas. Students must be present
at the field day in order to receive points.
16. There will be a 3% commission on the sale of each pen. If pen does not sell above the floor price and the exhibitor
chooses not to sell to the floor buyer, the Exhibitor is required to pay TELS a 1.5% commission on floor price
value of the pen. Floor price will be established the Thursday prior to the sale based on current market values at
the Durant Livestock Commission.
