GRADUATE ASSISTANT PROGRAM
Graduate Assistants (GA): The College of Business and Public Administration values joint
research and opportunities with faculty and students. Each quarter, the college funds
eligible candidates to be graduate and research assistants.
Every quarter an announcement is sent out a few weeks before the NEXT QUARTER to
students and faculty along with the deadline for that quarter. Graduate Assistants will now
work up to 120 hours per quarter (which is 10 hours per week for 12 weeks).
ATTENTION – NEW GA REQUIREMENT: With the increase in weekly hours from 5 to 10 hours
per week, and number of weeks from 10 to 12 weeks, GAs will now be expected to devote
half the time on innovative teaching support, as described below and will need to submit a
300 words report before the end of that quarter, to be eligible for re-appointment in a
subsequent quarter.
Graduate Assistants will now devote an average of 5 hours/week in support of teaching
innovations. This includes assistance with developing instructional resources, such as
developing PowerPoints, finding supplemental resources, tutoring undergraduate students,
or providing any other type of teaching related support (such as developing answer banks
and instructional manuals) to their faculty supervisors.
Students looking for a GA appointment will be responsible to negotiate 60 hours of workload
for the Winter quarter for teaching innovation support with your faculty supervisor. As
mentioned earlier, you’ll need to submit a 300-words report on what type of teaching
innovation support you provided over the quarter as part of your GA assignment. This report
is mandatory if you’re looking to renew your GA contract for a future quarter. The report
should be submitted to the Business Graduate Programs Office in JB-283 before the end of
your appointment period. For GAs working during the Fall quarter, you’ll need to submit
your report before Christmas break in December 2014.
Graduate Lab Assistants: In addition to the general graduate assistant opportunities, there
are a few graduate lab assistant positions available to work in the CBPA Labs each quarter;
these are paid from a separate fund. Students will need to fill out the same graduate
assistant application form and check the Lab Assistant section if they obtain a position with
Ian Jacobs, the Computer Resources Manager.
Students: Interested students in a graduate assistant position are requested to submit a copy
of their most recent résumé with their application before the quarterly deadline. They’re are
encouraged to network with faculty members to get matched with a faculty member before
they submit their application form – typically one GA appointment per student. Remember,
you’ll also need to negotiate with your prospective faculty supervisor 60 hours of workload
for teaching innovation support.
Faculty: Faculty members must also submit a GA request form before the quarterly deadline
– typically one GA per faculty. We encourage faculty to have made a match with one of the
students that approach them for a GA opportunity. If a faculty member needs a student for
more than 10 hours per week for 12 weeks, they must certify through their department that
they have PDF or FSRG funds available to cover for the additional hours. Below are the forms
and important information associated with the Graduate Assistant Program. IMPORTANT
NOTICE TO FACULTY MEMBERS – NEW REQUIREMENT FOR GAs: Please be aware that since
students will now be required to work 10 hours per week for 12 weeks for a total of 120
hours, 60 hours of that time they will be required to assist you with teaching innovation
support. This includes assistance with developing instructional resources, such as
developing PowerPoints, finding supplemental resources, tutoring undergraduate students,
or providing any other type of teaching related support (such as developing answer banks
and instructional manuals).
