Nina Ricci is pleased to announce Peter Copping as Artistic Director. The appointment of the 42-yearold British born designer is effective immediately. Notable for being a Louis Vuitton veteran – he was
part of Marc Jacobs’s team for twelve years – Copping was brought up in the countryside outside
Oxford.
Copping attended both St Martin’s School and the Royal College of Art where he received his master’s
degree. A chance meeting with Christian Lacroix led to Copping creating drawings for the couture salon
for several seasons. After designing at the Italian label Iceberg for two years, Copping returned to Paris
and worked for Sonia Rykiel in 1994. Here he gained a knowledge of knitwear and via his daily contact
with the esteemed atelier perfected his tailoring methods. Three years later, Jacobs, Vuitton’s first ever
fashion designer, chose Copping to be part of his then tiny team. Since it was very hands on at first,
Copping learnt about every aspect of launching a luxury ready-to-wear line.
Excited by his new opportunity at Nina Ricci, Copping cites the ambition and underlying philosophy of
Robert Ricci, and wholeheartedly agrees with the late founder that the house of Nina Ricci aspires “to
make women look beautiful and to bring out the charm of each one’s personality”. With Copping at the
helm, the Nina Ricci woman will stay at ease with her age and femininity. She is both sensual and
playful but, armed with a sharp eye for cut, fabric and detailing, always looks modern. In keeping with
the great Ricci’s legacy of romance and lightness, Copping also plans to develop the tailoring side of
the Brand.
On the accessories front, Copping stresses the huge potential. Further developing the leather goods
collection, he will also open up the range of shoe styles. In general, Copping aims to focus on
accessories by adding bows, flowers and other Ricci-like elements. The accessories will remain
fundamental to the expression of the spirit of the House.
