Olson Professorship Appointment Criteria – Appointee must have met the following criteria: 1. Must be age 62 or older as of retirement effective date; 2. Has held the rank of full or associate professor for a minimum of five (5) years); 3. Has relinquished their tenured faculty position by filing a notice of intent to retire with UMKC Human Resources; 4. Has indicated the desire to receive the appointment as a James C. Olson Professor following retirement from the university; 5. Has agreed to the terms of the appointment; 6. Whose contributions to the department and the University are recognized as meritorious by a departmental faculty committee; 7. Has been recommended for appointment by the Dean of the faculty member’s school or college; 8. Has completed and submitted all required Olson Professorship application materials and agreements; 9. Has received written notification of approval from the Provost approving the Olson Professorship application. Benefits – Appointees to James C. Olson Professorships shall continue as members of the Faculty; and their names shall appear as members of the university faculty. The James C. Olson Professors will generally have a teaching assignment in the appropriate college or school; in special circumstance there may be an alternate assignment agreed upon in another area of faculty responsibilities. Olson Professors will: Have e-mail, phone and computer support. Have access to parking, library and athletics commensurate with regular faculty. Be eligible for travel funds at the discretion of the applicable dean. Receive office space as appropriate to their assignment. Receive compensation as negotiated with the applicable dean up to the limit specified below. Be eligible for appointment up to 25% FTE and earn no more annually than 25% of the appointee’s final academic year salary, contingent upon departmental need and funding availability. Be eligible for term appointments not exceeding three years in length, contingent upon departmental need and funding availability. Application for a James C. Olson Professorship Appointment Following Provost Approval … 1. Dean works with Chair and Candidate to draft an Offer Letter utilizing Provost's Olson Professorship Offer Letter Template (inserting specific duties, responsibilities, dates, salary and conditions as indicated in template) and sends to Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs for review and approval 2. There must be a minimum 90-day break in service between the Retirement Effective Date and the Rehire Effective Date. 3. Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs returns revised/approved Offer Letter to Dean 4. Dean distributes approved Offer Letter to Olson Professor for signature 5. Olson Professor signs and returns signed Offer Letter to Dean 6. Dean distributes original signed Offer Letter to unit HRF for attachment to re-hire PAF 7. Unit HRF submits Notification of Academic Hire form with request for CBC to HR for processing 8. When CBC is successful and complete, unit HRF works with Olson Professor to collect and complete re-hire employment documentation. 9. Unit HRF prepares HIR/RFE PAF according to the terms and conditions of the Olson Professorship Offer letter, attaches original signed Olson Professorship Offer Letter and all other required re-hire documentation, and sends to HR for processing a minimum of (5) business days prior to Olson Professorship effective date.
