TRAINING OF TRAINERS: POSITIVE DISCIPLINE PROJECT Introduction ActionAid Ghana (AAG) is an affiliate member of an international rights-based organisation working in over 40 countries taking sides with poor people to end poverty and injustices together. In Ghana, ActionAid works in six regions including the Brong Ahafo, Northern, Upper East, Upper West, Volta and Greater Accra Regions. The focus of all our work is to ensure that the rights of poor and excluded people are respected, promoted, protected and fulfilled under all circumstances. Considering education as the key to a life of dignity, it constitutes one of our priority areas of work. The United Nations Convention on the rights of the Child (CRC) stipulates in Article 18 that every child has a right to education and it is the duty of the State to ensure that primary education is free and compulsory, a provision which is echoed in the 1992 Constitution of Ghana. It is important that this is provided alongside other rights to human dignity. Consequently, the school must respect other human rights of the pupil, the child. Purpose AAG considers any action or punishment of the child in which physical force is used and which is intended to cause pain or discomfort to the child an affront to the child’s dignity and a violation of the child’s rights to a safe and non-violent learning environment. Moreover, in many community schools where AAG works, the fear of corporal punishment has been identified as one of the major reason why some children play truant or even drop out of school. Corporal punishment is therefore a violation of the child’s rights and an obstacle to a conducive school environment. AAG is committed to ‘advocating for conducive school and community environments to enhance effective teaching and learning with no infringements on the child’s rights’. Consequently, as part of the Stop Violence Against Girls in School project the organisation developed and piloted a positive discipline model which promotes the positive points of behaviour. This model is to be upscaled to equip more teachers to use positive disciple in managing their classes. Leaders of the PTAs, SMC and local staff of GES will be trained on positive discipline so as to change mind-sets and enable them join the campaign for the national adoption of Positive Discipline and facilitate its implementation in schools.
