NEWSLETTER TERM 1 WEEK 11 2014
Principal’s Update
Nga mihi mahana ki koutou
(A warm greeting to everyone)
This has been a long term and we can see both
teachers and children are ready for a break!
Teachers have had a lot of professional development
this term – mainly focused on technology tools and
Modern Learning Practise. We’ve also been busy
preparing for the merger – even though it is still
some months off there’s been a number of meetings
that we have been involved in.
Children have benefitted from a good eight weeks of
swimming and in the juniors their ‘weather unit’ has
been engaging while the seniors have been equally
engaged with their ‘plant unit’.
A highlight for me has been The Arts programme we
are now offering in particular the school band is
awesome. Equally exciting is Whaea Sharon’s
programme with te reo and kapahaka.
Staff had a planning session last night looking ahead
to term two and it looks equally busyWe will have student interns (trainee teachers)
joining us for seven weeks, we have winter sports
beginning and we will have our juniors going to
‘circus school” for a four week block. Just a few of the
things we have to look forward to.
Have a safe and relaxing break and we will see children
back at school on Tuesday 6 May.
Day Care for Monday May 5
We are closed for a Teacher only day on Monday
May 5 but you may need day care so…
SKIDS, who run the after school programme at
Freeville School, have agreed to run a day programme
on the 5th of May for the children of Freeville, North
and Central New Brighton Schools whose parents
have work or other commitments. Children can
come at 7 am for breakfast ($5), from 8.30 am to
5.30pm ($20) or do both ($25). Children will need
to bring their own morning tea and lunch, afternoon
tea will be provided. Please contact SKIDS if you want
to book in - ph 388 3533 or email sarah@skids.co.nz
for details and bookings.

Tomorrow, Thursday 17th April, is wheels day. All
children who have consistently shown or school
values this term are invited to bring bikes,
skateboards and scooters. Children must have helmets

ramps and have an awesome time!
Incredible Years Parenting Programme
The next courses start in August – there is a day
course and an evening course.
Incredible years is available to parents of children up
to and including eight years of age.
This is an amazing programme that supports parents
by providing a number of strategies and supports. It is
runs over a number of weeks and the providers can
help with child care arrangement s for younger
children if needed.

Leadership Opportunities
Last week we had a group of senior pupils attend a
health forum with students from twelve other
schools.
Thanks to Llynda for supporting these children. Below
is a report written by TeRina and Megan about their
day.
Student Health Leadership Forum 2014
8th of April 2014, was the day that we made room for a new
aspect of learning in our lives. The aim of this health forum
we attended was for other schools including ourselves, to
bring each-others school values together and for students
and teachers to begin the journey ‘to improve the ideas in
developing a safe and supportive learning environment’.
The course was divided into 4 parts; the first was “what
things help us do well at school?’ We started with a mind
map of ideas then moved into a global café where all
schools rotated to look at others’ ideas comparing the
differences and similarities. We then went back to our
station and built on what we had.
Then we moved on to ‘Te Whare Tapa Wha’ .This meant
that the 4 walls each had a purpose in supporting each
other. If one wall was to fall the bond would become weaker
then the next wall would weaken until the bond is broken.
The four walls were ‘Taha Hinengaroa- Mental Health’,
‘Taha Tinana- Physical Health’ ‘Taha Wairua- Spiritual
Health’ and ‘Taha Whanau- Extended Family Health’;
Later we use our ideas from ‘Te Whare Tapa Wha’ to create
a Hauora Banner which were strips of paper with our ideas
woven into a work of art.
This represented our four walls of student wellbeing.
The final part was adding the final touch to our work. Every
school had to write an action they would like to pursue
throughout their school community. Our action is to make
opportunities for seniors to take more leadership
responsibilities.
To end the session Hornby Primary closed with a karakia. It
was a truly great day!
Fun in the Office
A joyful part of every day is the steady stream of
children who visit me before school.

Winter is coming, and the race is on to patch up cold,
unsafe and unsanitary Christchurch homes.
CanCERN in partnership with various agencies and
companies has launched a campaign called Let’s Find
& Fix that will enable people to have approved
temporary work done, at no cost to them, without it
impacting their final settlement or temporary
accommodation allowance.
“As earthquake-related repairs and rebuilds continue,
the community-led collective is concerned that there
may be people who will face another winter in cold,
damp, unhealthy homes,” says Canterbury
Communities’ Earthquake Recovery Network
spokesperson Leanne Curtis. “This campaign is about
finding those people and providing temporary fixes to
get them through the winter months,” she says.
Previously the cost of temporary repairs may have
been deducted off a property owner’s temporary
accommodation allowance or counted as part of their
final settlement for earthquake damages but under
the Let’s Find & Fix programme that won’t be the
case for approved repairs.
A range of agencies, including CERA, Christchurch
City Council, insurers and claims management
companies, EQC, Community Energy Action, Red
Cross and Canterbury Earthquake Appeal Trust are
supporting the community initiative. Between them
they are covering the costs of the temporary repairs
and those associated with running the campaign.
The type of the damage from the earthquakes will
include: • Holes in external walls, the roof or floor, or
where residents still have gaps in their homes covered
in plastic. • Problems with drainage where the toilet
backs up, or there is raw sewerage/waste water or
polluted liquefaction lying on the property• External
winds and doors that do not open, shut or lock
property. “touch with us and we will make the
temporary fix happen,” she says.Red Cross staff are
currently visiting houses throughout the city as part
of the Let’s Find and Fix Campaign. If the resident is
not home, the callers are leaving a card inviting
residents to call 0800 233551 for help. Householders
are also being provided with information about
appropriate services and support available.
