Administration of Medicines Course for Assistant Practitioners at
Wirral University Teaching Hospital
AIM
This course aims to provide you with the knowledge and skills required to administer
medicines outlined in a safe and effective manner. The medicines covered during the course
of this training would be listed in a Specialty Specific Formulary for Assistant Practitioners
agreed and approved by the Non-Medical Prescribing Team (NMPT).
LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of this course you will be able to:

Safely administer medicines as outlined in Specialty Specific Formulary for Assistant
Practitioners in accordance with relevant Trust policies and procedures
Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the role of an Assistant Practitioner in
administration of medicines within own clinical area.
Demonstrate the ability to deal with adverse effects and how to escalate any issues
beyond own scope of practice
Demonstrate an understanding of the legal and ethical issues related to
administration of medicines.

COURSE FORMAT
The course will run for 3 months and a variety of teaching strategies will take place.







You will be expected to attend 1 full day and 2 half days at the Clinical Skills Centre.
The rest of your learning will take place within your clinical area.
You will be provided with a folder that you will use build your portfolio evidencing
your knowledge and skills in administering medicines as in accordance with NMPC
approved formulary and relevant Trust policy.
A monograph of all drugs that are outlined in the NMPC approved formulary must be
completed (template on page 19 of the course book).
Produce a piece of reflection outlining benefits and pitfalls of experienced by
Assistant Practitioners when administering medicines.
You will be allocated a mentor/assessor who is a Registered Nurse with a recognised
NMC teaching qualification.
A completed portfolio will be submitted to the Clinical Skill Centre at the end of your
course.
On the final attendance day, you will also complete medicines administration OSCE
(Objective Structured Clinical Examination) and a Drugs Calculation Test. Details will
be discussed on day 1 of the course.
