PART 2 of the STAR assignment guides you through some of the processes researchers employ when exploring a research question, and provides tips for how to successfully navigate the UW Libraries online research resources. Choose one general topic below as a focus for preliminary research. 1. Pick a research theme Please check one topic of interest from this list: ... Topic 1: Art Therapy ... Topic 2: Music Therapy ... Topic 3: Dance Therapy Associated areas of study for the three topics above include: Art, Community Psychology, Dance, Education, Health & Medicine, Music, Psychology, Nursing, Theater, etc. You’ll need to translate your selected research topic into a few keywords. Find background information articles using Gale Virtual Reference Gale Virtual Reference is a collection of fulltext e-books (mostly specialized, subjectspecific encyclopedias) for getting background on topics. 2 Using the research topic (and example keywords) you chose in Step 1; conduct a keyword search in the Gale Virtual Reference database, linked from your STAR DCI guide on the “Research” page, to identify background reference articles on your topic. Find scholarly journal articles using EBSCO Academic Search Complete Academic Search Complete is one of the Libraries’ largest databases, containing articles from many different disciplinary backgrounds. It contains scholarly and non-scholarly sources, but allows you to limit your search to scholarly sources with a check box, based on the requirements of your research assignments. Using the research topic (and example keywords) you chose in Step 1, conduct a keyword search in the Academic Search Complete database, linked from your STAR DCI guide on the “Research” page, to identify scholarly articles on your topic. When that happens, look for the “Check for full text” button: This will check for other databases where we might have the full text, and try to link you to the full text. Explore Disciplinary Research using Subject Research Guides The Campus Library Subject Guides provide you access to research tools (journal article databases, background information, web sites, and more) organized by topic or academic discipline. These pages are created by the librarians responsible for the areas of study listed. Based on your research topic, choose a subject research guide: Go to the Campus Library homepage, http://library.uwb.edu, and click on the “Research Guides by Subject” link. From the list of subject research guides, http://libguides.uwb.edu/, choose the subject guide you feel is most related to your chosen research topic. The instructions and links necessary to complete the worksheet are in the online DCI STAR guide at: http://libguides.uwb.edu/Kovalesky The main point of this section is to get you into “the stacks,” tracking down books on the shelves (mostly upstairs on the third floor of the library), and exploring how they’re organized, which may be different from what you’ve experienced in libraries before. First, you’ll search online to find a title and call number. 1. To get started, go to the Campus Library’s home page, http://library.uwb.edu, and click on the tab that says “UW Libraries Search (Beta).” 2. Now, when you search (using the research topic and example keywords you chose in PART 2 back on the first page) your results will be limited to only items that we have in the campus library—mostly books, dvds, and ebooks. Since the goal of this exercise is to give you some practice searching on the shelves of the library, you’re now going to limit to books that are in the Campus Library. Use the “Resource Type” option in the left menu bar of your screen to limit to books. If you don’t see a link for books, you may need to click on “More options.” Then, be sure to click the box in the column “include” next to books. (If you accidentally click in the “exclude” column, you’ll eliminate books from your results.) 4. Click on the dropdown menu next to the search box that says, “Articles, Books and More,” and select “UW Bothell/CCC Library.” Then click Search again. Finally, near the top of your list, where it says, “Show only,” click on the link that says, “Available in the Library.” 5 If you did not find any items relating to your topic with your search, this would be a good time to ask for help from a librarian: http://library.uwb.edu/askus.html. Librarians can help you find a book to fill out this next section with. Be sure to tell the librarian you’re working on your STAR project. Chat is mostly staffed by Seattle campus librarians, so for Bothell-based help, try one of the other contact options (in person, phone, or email), and tell the librarian you’re working on your STAR project. 5. Select a book you think looks relevant to your research, and click on “Availability & Request Options.” There may be more than one UW Library that has the book, but one of them should start with “UWB/CCC Library.” Record the following information about your book. Call number: Going to the shelves on the 3rd floor (or possibly another library location, like Reserves) Now, use the library location and call number you wrote down to locate this book. If your library location starts with something other than “Bothell/CCC” (e.g., “Health Sciences Library Serials,” or “Suzzallo and Allen Libraries Stacks”) then you may have missed some of the instructions in step 4 or 5 above. Please go back and limit to UW Bothell/CCC Library, and choose a book that is available in the Campus Library. It is important that you actually go to the shelves to explore. If you’re filling this out electronically, you may want to save at this point, and come back with notes that answer the rest of the questions in PART 3. Is/was the book on the shelf? Choose an item. Look through that section on the shelf and choose another book of interest from that shelf. If none is of interest, use the book that is right next to yours (or closest to your call number recorded above). You’ve now hopefully found some background information, scholarly journal articles, and books on your research topic! Write a 250-500 word reflective response commenting on the experience of doing library research at the Campus Library. Below are several questions to consider as you write – not all questions may be relevant to your own experience. What did you learn about the process of doing library research using academic research tools? What different types of results did you find across the different research resources? How did the results differ by resource? Did you have to modify or change your keyword searches, depending on the resource? By using subject-specific research guides, did you gain any insight into how research is communicated differently across academic disciplines? The welcome video described many ways of getting help from librarians. At what point(s) in the STAR Project did you have questions? Did you seek help – from a student, a librarian, your instructor? Why or why not? The UW Libraries own or subscribe to a wide variety of research resources for students, but with all this available information it’s often a challenge to find just the right sources for your work. How do you think the research requirements for your college classes may differ from those in high school? What questions do you still have about doing college-level research?
