English Key Stage 3 At Oasis Academy Arena, Key Stage 3 literacy is embedded into all English lessons by using a half termly literacy focus, which is then incorporated into at least 5 lessons each half term. Year 7 Course Content Students study a range of texts from fiction and non-fiction that allow them to develop their reading, writing and spoken language skills, so that they consolidate and extend their learning from KS2. These texts included a novel, one Shakespeare play, poetry and drama. Additionally, each half term students focus on two skills from reading and writing, and complete a spoken language task. Term 1 Non-fiction: Autobiography and Prose: Holes Term 2 Drama: Chamber of Nothing and Poetry: Beowulf Term 3 Shakespeare: A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Media: The Apprentice Assessment 1 written assessment each half term completed under exam conditions that assesses reading and/or writing skills. 1 spoken language assessment each half term that assesses speaking and listening skills. Year 8 Course Content In year 8 students’ reading, writing and spoken language skills are developed further through the selection of texts with more challenging themes, ideas, language and structure. A range of non-fiction and fiction texts are studied including Shakespeare, short stories, poetry and drama.
