Puzzle Piece Mystery Book Project
Mystery stories are written puzzles made for readers to solve. To complete this project, you
will create an eight-piece puzzle that gives clues about the mystery book you have read.
You will share your puzzle with the class.
Your puzzle project is due on Monday, February 25th!!!
Materials Needed:
Puzzle pieces (template provided)
Colored pencils/crayons/markers
White paper for puzzle pieces
Tag board
Glue stick
Scissors
Blue/black pen to write OR typed on a computer (NO PENCIL ALLOWED)
Directions:
1. Read your book. Use the attached Story Map sheet as a bookmark. Fill it in as you read
the book. It will help you with your project. On the back of the Story Map is a calendar for
the project. It is to be signed at the end of each week by a parent/guardian verifying the
pages have been read or the work has been done.
2. Cut out your puzzle pieces on white paper. Number your pieces 1–8.
Puzzle Piece #1
This piece must include a creative display of the title and author of the book as well
as your name.
Puzzle Piece #2
Describe a main character in the story in about 5 sentences. Include adjectives that
describe the character and include at least one example from the story that supports
an adjective you chose. Include a picture of this character.
Puzzle Piece #3
Describe the setting in about 5 sentences. Also include the time frame.
Did the story take place in the past, present, or future? Include a picture of the
setting.
Puzzle Piece #4
Describe the problem/conflict in about 5 sentences. What is the mystery/problem?
Who is involved? Include a picture related to the problem.
Puzzle Piece #5
Tell the reader about the main events in the story. This puzzle piece should be 2-3
paragraphs in length. Don’t write about the climax or resolution just yet. You do not
have to include a picture on this piece.
Puzzle Piece #6
Tell the reader about the climax of the book. Include a picture that represents the
details in the climax of the book.
Puzzle Piece #7
Describe the resolution of the problem/conflict, but don’t give away the ending of
the book. Include a picture that represents the resolution.
Puzzle Piece #8
Describe your favorite part of the book. Why was it your favorite? Would you
recommend this book to someone else? Include a picture of your favorite part.
4. Put your pieces together on a large piece of tag board. Decorate the edges in the theme
of your book (pictures/symbols/patterns of something that represents your book). Your
pieces must fit together nicely.
5. Your project should be done neatly. Grammar and spelling need to be correct.
Illustrations must be thorough and colored.
