Erasmus Placement – Health Sciences
Cyprus International Institute for Environmental and Public Health
in association with the Harvard School of Public Health
Cyprus University of Technology (CUT), Limassol, Cyprus
EMPLOYER INFORMATION
This Erasmus Internship will take place at the Water and Health Lab
(www.cut.ac.cy/waterandhealth), which belongs to the Cyprus
International Institute for Environmental and Public Health in
association with the Harvard School of Public Health (CII). The Water
and Health laboratory was established in 2009 and it is led by Prof. K.C.
Makris with an active research group of two postdoctoral fellows, one
PhD student, 2 MS students and 2 researcher assistants (MS holders).
Cyprus International
Prof. Makris also holds an appointment as Adjunct Assistant Professor
Institute for
Environmental and Public of Environmental Health at Harvard University, USA. The Harvard
Health
School of Public Health and the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT)
in association with
have established an international research and education initiative for
Harvard School of Public
environmental and public health, i.e., the CII (www.cut.ac.cy/cii). The
Health
CII brings together researchers, educators, and health practitioners
from Harvard, Cyprus and the Mediterranean region to address
environmental and public health issues.
Name of Organization
The ultimate goal of the Water & Health research program is to
minimize the human health risk associated with chronic exposures to
environmental chemicals, including those associated with various
water uses and sources. Towards this goal, the Water & Health research
program applies improved exposure assessment protocols for
endocrine disruptors and disinfection by-products that refine the
degree of association with their corresponding health outcomes. The
group aims to improve our understanding of chemical exposures and
the health risk of environmental and social determinants of metabolic
diseases. The group for the last 12 months has been engaged into the
setup of metabolomics protocols for health studies and the application
of advanced GIS and Bayesian network models. The water and health
laboratory is equipped with state-of-the art instrumentation (GSMS/MS, ICPMS) to measure low concentrations of environmental
chemicals in biological fluids such as blood and urine.
The CII is part of the Cyprus University of Technology, which is a new,
public and independent university, aspiring to develop itself into a
pioneering academic organization in the fields of science, technology
and health. The CUT is located downtown, at the sea-side area of
Limassol, the second largest city in Cyprus. Limassol is considered a
cosmopolitan touristic resort for thousands of visitors nearly all year
round, due to its mild winters.

1. A research statement (2 pages max) concisely describing your
research interests, and why you want to specifically apply for
placement in our laboratory team. This letter weighs a lot
towards the evaluation of an applicant’s package.
2. Detailed curriculum vitae
We accept applications throughout the year. We will respond to
your application within a week from the date of receipt.
