Objective is to force the offense into putting the ball on the floor. Pushing off the back foot, stepping forward with the front and sliding the back foot forward. BLOCK- Committed by the defense, stop the movement of the ball from moving to other players on opposing team. BOX OUT- what every player should do when a shot goes up -try to block out or “box out” the person he is guarding to keep him away from the basket to prevent him from getting an “inside position” for the rebound. CENTER- 5 player good rebounder. Must be able to play with back to the basket and solid inside scoring threat, may draw the most fouls- good free throw shooter. CHARGE- Committed by the offense, CROSSOVER DRIBBLE- an effective way for ball handlers to change direction. CROSSOVER STEP- if offense executes a jab step the defender responds by sliding over in the direction of that step, the offensive player can then go opposite direction with a crossover step. DENY- preventing the player you are guarding from obtaining the ball DOUBLE STEP- two steps to help players get into triple threat position making them ready to make o move or shoot every time a pass is caught only taught once stationary moves are learned. EURO STEP- helps player avoid charge or defender in front of them. Pushes off the inside foot across the defenders body, jumps with opposite foot and shoots with inside hand. FAKE REVERSE DRIBBLE- same as reverse dribble, but only a half spin (changing speeds not direction) 8 FOOTWORK- key in helping players become multidimensional FRONT THE LOW POST- on defense, this has to do with how you defend the Low post player. The defender can stay between he and the basket or get out in front of him between the low post player and the passer to deny the pass. GIVE AND GO- basic play where after passing to a teammate, the passer quickly cuts toward the basket, and receives the return pass back from his teammate for the lay-up HELP SIDE- letting up on the individual you are guarding to help a teammate prevent inside “penetration” INSIDE PIVOT- used when player is on the move and catching a pass, swinging his outside foot around so he can face the basket. Man-to-man DEFENSE- each defensive player is assigned to guard a specific opposing player. He may “switch” his player with another teammate if he gets screened. ON THE LINE- refer to defenders position on the floor relative to the ball handler and his man. Defense position is such that the player can see his man and the ball and has his chest facing toward the player (imaginary line) with his arm up in the passing lane for a “full denial” situation. PICK AND ROLL- a play where an offensive player sets a “screen” (“pick”) on a teammate’s defender, freeing up the teammate. After, the screener moves (or rolls) off the screen to the hoop or an open area for the return pass. POINT GUARD- 1 player best ball handler, runs the offence and excellent passer. An extension of the coach on the floor POST UP- offensive move where in a low post player positions himself and “seals” his defender off so that he can receive the pass down low on the block, where he can use a “post move” for a score, or quickly pass the ball back outside to an open teammate for a three pointer. POWER FORWARD- one of biggest and strongest on the team, dominant rebounder, “4 player” 9 RETREAT STEP- player pushes off the front foot, taking a step back with the back foot and slides the front foot back to reestablish balance and stance. REVERSE DRIBBLE- spin keeping the body between the ball and the defender REVERSE PIVOT- when a player’s back is to the basket, catches the ball, swings shoulder to get more space from the defender when turning to face basket. REVERSE THE BALL- quickly move the ball by passing to the opposite side of the fore-court, either by a series of quick passes, or by means of a “skip pass” SKIP PASS- a pass directly across court, thereby “skipping” one or more offensive players in the succession around the perimeter. SHOOTING GUARD- bigger of 2 guards, “2 player”, best outside shooter, good receivertypically gets first pass to start offense. SMALL FORWARD- “swingman”, versatility, taller than other guards but maybe not as quick. “3 player” possesses many same skills as guards. SPIN MOVE- used when a player has back to the basket and is being pressured by a defender. STONG SIDE DRIVE- attack the defender. Jab step to get the defense to react and to get head and shoulders past the defender, then explode towards the basket with one dribble STOP AND GO- while dribbling and protecting the ball, sudden stop will get defender to stop. It will leave them off balance giving the ball handler the opportunity to dart past. SWING STEP- defensive maneuver to counter an offensive attack at players front foot. Pivot on the back foot while swinging the opposite elbow and front foot in the direction taken by the offensive player. TRAP- set when two defenders double-team the ball handler, trying to forcea turn-over of jumpball situation 10 UP THE LINE- refer to defenders position on the floor, relative to the ball-handler. In a position backed off of the imaginary line, toward the basket, in a position where you can see both the ball and your man. From here you are able to prevent a “back cut” and be able to force the ball handler to pass away from the player you are defending. 11 Offensive Plays Man to Man “Rocket” As soon as Player 4 clears the screen set by Player 2, Player 5 sets a down screen for Player 2. Player 2 will flash to the top of the key for an open 3-point shot. If Player 4 is open flashing across the lane, Player 1 will throw the pass. If that's not open, the second option is to pass the ball to Player 2 at the top of the key. 2-3 Half Court Zone “Hole” Player 1 will dribble off the screen. If nobody steps up to guard him, he will shoot the 12-15 foot jump shot. Soon as Player 1 starts to dribble Player 4 will cut underneath the hoop to the ball side and Player 3 will float to the corner. Player 2 cuts to the weak side to keep the defensive Player #3 honest. 12 3-2 Half Court Zone “Empire” 4-2-2 Half Court Zone “Eagle” Player 1 and 3 flanking the X1 defender, and 4 and 5 down on the blocks, or just above. Your best shooter, 2, runs the baseline from corner to corner, always on the ball-side. If he/she can make a couple from the corner, the X4 defender will have to come out to defend 13 2-1-2 Half Court Zone “Diamond” The pivot player 5 is at the high post and forwards 3 and 4 are wide at the free-throw line extended. Guard 1 cuts through as shown. This puts one guard 2 as the odd man outside. Player 2 is assumed to have the ball. The free-throw line extended positions of the forwards usually split the positions of the two defenders on the sides of the zone, making these forwards the responsibility of the outside deep defenders in the zone. 1-3-1 Half Court Zone “Basket” Player 4 goes up the lane and seals Defensive Player 5 by posting up. Player 2 sets a screen on Defensive Player 3 then player 5 curls around the screen and goes to the hoop. 14 Box & 1 half court zone “Playing Spades” Player 1 brings the ball up court and Player 2 stays even with 1. Prior to crossing the half court line, Player 1 passes to 2. After passing to 2 Player 1 crosses half court. Player 2 quickly passes the ball to 3 at or near the top of the key. Player 3 looks for 4 cutting to the basket or O1 on the wing to start the offense. Triangle and 2 half court zone “Goliath” Player 1 and 2 are on the wings with their defenders. They both take their men down and screen on the defenders. Player 4 and 5 pop out to the wing for the shot, 3 cuts through the lane to the ball side corner for the shot, if 4 and 5 are covered. 15 Match up half court zone Full court man to man press “Explode” 3, 4 and 5 are up-court. 1, the best dribbler takes the ball out-of-bounds. He passes it inbounds to 2. Player 2 immediately returns the pass to 1 and immediately clears up-court. (Both 2 and 1 use fakes to decoy the defensive players away from their intended positions.) Player 1 dribbles up-court, using reverse dribbles and protecting the ball. The positions of 1 and 2 could be reversed. Half Court zone press (double the ball) (pick up at mid court) “Falcone” 16 With three defenders across the center line, and two at the top of the key, again have your "tight end" in the middle player 4 and one of your wings along the ball-side sideline. Send one tall, good receiver down deep, to the hoop. If the two back defenders cheat toward outside, you may find your deep receiver wide open for the "over the top" pass to the hoop. Mid court and end line out of bounds play against Man to man defense. 17 Defensive Plays “Base” zone defense This the original set on the 2-3 zone. The top two players will pinch towards the middle to stop dribble penetration. TRAP 2-3 defense Players 3 & 4 need to deny the pass to the wing and Player 5 needs to deny the pass to free throw line while your top players have to option to trap the ball once it has been moved past half court. 3-2 defense Player one drops to the high post while player 3 moves out to guard the ball. 18 Hammer 1-2-1-1 Press defense Line X1 directly behind 5 and parallel to 3 and 4 to intercept any long passes. X4 denies any inbounds pass to the middle. X2 and X3 look to force the inbounds pass to go into the corners. X5 is the safety in case of a long pass. Stretch 2-2-1 defense full court stretch Start in the basic matchup zone set and stretch it up the floor with the same responsibilities as an half court stretch 19 20 Last Second shots Cloud 9 Player 4 sets a pick for 1 then player 1 dribbles to the right wing. Allowing player 2 screens for 3 at baseline and 5 at elbow. So player 1 can pass to 5 inside the lane or 3 at deep corner for a shot. Cover Up When the official hands the ball to player 1, player 4 curls around the three players on the free throw line. If open, player 1 can make the inbounds pass to player 4 for an open or contested shot. 21 Transition Plays “Fire” 22 Out of Bounds Plays 23 Mid court inbounds “Savage” On the slap of the ball, Player 5 sprints to the opposite low block, and Player 4 sprints to the ball-side elbow or the ball-side baseline near the three-point line. Player 2 takes two strong steps forward, and Player 3 back pedals about six steps and very high. Player 1 pretends to focus on Players 2 and 3, but he is actually hoping to hit Player 4. If Player 1 is able to pass to Player 4, then he sprints directly toward the hoop, hoping for a return pass for a lay-in. If Player 5's defender helps on him, Player 5 should be open for a dink shot End line out of bounds inbound “Blazer” The cutter flares out to the right corner, receive the pass, and reverse the ball to Player 3 at the free throw line. Player 3 is in good position to dump down to Player 1 as he steps in bounds after inbounding the ball. Player 4 cuts low off of Player 5, and Player 5 steps to the mid-block area. Somewhere in all that action, there is an easy shot waiting for someone. 24 Swing Players 3 and 5 fake towards the ball and sprint down court while player 1 hooks around and player 2 crashes down toward the in bounder. 25 “Stack attack 3” 5 has the option to inbound the ball to player 3 or swing it around the back side to player 4 if open. “Zombie” Player 1’s first option is player for then looks off to player 2 if open. 26 Scouting Report Bulls 113 vs Cavs 98 February 12, 2015 Chicago Bulls 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
