GRAD NEWSLETTER 2015-2016

This is an exciting and most important year for all potential graduates. The Guidance Staff is looking forward to working with you to help you through the process of moving from high school to your post secondary destination successfully. We are here to help you make these important decisions but remember...it is ultimately your responsibility to meet deadlines and search out available scholarships and to complete all applications on time. Let’s work together to make this a successful year!

APPLYING TO UNIVERSITY?

Information sessions will be held for all graduating students.

Students planning to attend a university in Ontario will complete an on-line application beginning November. The nonrefundable application fee of $150.00 allows you three university/program choices. If you wish to have more than three choices, you must pay an additional charge of $50.00 for each additional selection after. Deadline for submission of online applications to OUAC is January 13, 2016 for equal consideration by the universities. You may still apply after this deadline but spots may be filled and you may not get your program choices.

Final grades for semester 1 courses will be submitted in February and mid-term marks for semester 2 will be submitted in

April. Some entrance scholarships are based upon the best six 4 U/M marks after these two transmissions. The University of Windsor’s is based on final marks received in early July.

Early acceptances may be received in April and the latest date by which applicants can expect a response from an Ontario university is May 27. The earliest date you may be required to respond to an admission offer is June 1. In general, early decisions will be based on the results achieved in Gr. 12 U/M courses including the required courses where applicable. All offers of admission will carry explicit conditions to be met with respect to final marks. In other words, if your semester 2 marks end up being significantly lower, you may find that your offer(s) of admission will be rescinded.

APPLYING TO COLLEGE?

Information sessions will be held for all graduating students.

Fill in an application for Ontario’s colleges in November. The fee of $95.00 will give you five choices of schools or programs, with no more than three choices at any one school. February 1, 2016 is the date for equal consideration by the colleges but is not the deadline for submitting applications to OCAS. You may still apply after this deadline but spots may be filled and you may not get your program choices. February 1 is also the earliest admission offer date and the earliest date that applicants may confirm an offer of admission. You must make your final choice by May 1st. First transmission in November will include Semester 1 midterm marks.

RESEARCHING POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION

One of the most valuable tools for university-bound students is the re-designed website eINFO which is accessed from the website: www.electronicinfo.ca. The equivalent resource for college-bound students can be found at the

Find a

Program

feature at ontariocolleges.ca. Both contain a list of every program in the province and where it is available, as well as a list of admission requirements and academic cut-offs. There is also data on residence living and expenses.

Many other resources may be borrowed on a three-day loan from the Guidance Office. These include:

 Handbooks and calendars for all Ontario universities and colleges

 Handbooks and calendars for many schools in other provinces and in the U.S.

The internet is a very valuable resource for research! Try individual College and University websites and the following websites for additional information:

LOOKING FOR A SCHOLARSHIP?

There are currently over 60,000 Canadian scholarships, awards and bursaries. Listen to announcements, check the bulletin board and search the many web sites (some listed above).

Not all scholarships/awards are based solely upon your academic record. Many consider community activities, leadership and athletics. Others are offered to specific groups based upon parental employment, heritage or financial need. There are also automatic entrance scholarships that are offered by universities and colleges.
