Approval of Minutes: The October minutes were accepted as submitted. Committee reports/Chair Selections: - - - - - - Executive Committee – Tom McGinn: This is our last formal meeting of 2013. Mock Interviews will take place in December in place of our December meeting. Mock Interview/Career Conversations Committee – Gwen Harring and JoAnne Brack: o Advisories 11/22 – we have enough presenters and 2 back-ups. Presenters have the presentation which includes a new social media slide. Gwen will resend it. Presenters should arrive by 8:15; gather in College and Career Center. Advisory lasts from 8:45-9:15. o Mock Interviews December 9-12 (M-Th) during 11th grade English classes (7 classes). Volunteers can sign up via SurveyMonkey. We need 10 more interviewers for the week. New this year is a resume station providing resume review and advice (“Resume Doctor”). John Nicodemus and Sue Gallagher will take the lead on this; Gwen also has reached out to AAWDC for additional support in this area. Website: If anyone has suggestions to enhance the website, contact Joanne. Jim Cleveland maintains the site. BAB minutes are posted on the site. We also will post footage on the mock interview process and other student oriented activity. BAB membership list is posted on the website. Guest Speaker Directory: Next big push to recruit speakers will be at Mock Interviews – those volunteers will be invited to sign up. Career areas needed are on the form which is available on the BAB website. Financial Literacy Advisory: March 28 – grades 10-12. We need 63 volunteers for this event. Recruitment will start when Mock Interviews are finished. A PowerPoint and talking points will be provided. Marketing/Membership/Appreciation Committee: nominations for business partner of the year will be due in late January. We should be thinking about who we would like to nominate – a business that supports the school on many levels. Last year our nominee, Jody Giles at UnderArmour, won for the county. Signature – JoAnne Brack: o 28 faculty and 3 Board of Education members participated in a Pride of Baltimore II entrepreneurial training experience. o A teacher is interested in talking with a business partner about how Spanish language is used in business. How does it incorporated with hiring practice? Contact Joanne if you have any ideas. o Will schedule some teacher shadow days – teachers will go out and shadow a business partner for a half-day to get a sense of what it’s like to be in the business world. o Planning Business and Innovation Entrepreneurship day in Feb – looking for people to serve on the planning committee. It probably will be a speed-dating format: speakers will move from table to table to talk to groups of students about being an entrepreneur. Alternative: more like college fair. Stacey volunteered to work on this. Announcements/New Business: - - - Question - How do students become aware of university activities in the area? There is a desire to create a pipeline of pathways to majors. E.g. in March there will be a virtual reality fair at UMCP. How do we connect students to this event? Stacey will share the info with the BAB and SPHS will share it with the students. There are other similar events being planned. These are all within computer science area; other departments are scheduling other similar events. Chartwell Foundation: Jim Cleveland, Tom and Joanne, Jill Mckay and Pcounselor Jill Mckay met with Andy Frank: o Looking for help with Chartwell Foundation Website; discussed combining this with other work at Chartwell to create a full 135-hour internship. o They have raised scholarship money but have had difficulty giving it away. We should inform school counselors about the scholarship; Andy wasn’t clear on qualifications and application process. o Andy wants to be more visible and vocal in the community – how can the Chartwell Foundation be eyes and ears of Severna Park? One option could be he could be involved with Community Based Challenge being incorporated into the Signature Explorations class. - He will come into the class, present problem, and students come up with viable solutions. Taste and Sip of Greater Severna Park, sponsored by Chamber of Commerce – great networking event. Shared flyer. Dr. Jessica Heard, former BAB chair, is ill and will begin treatment; we discussed doing something for her. Thanked Dave Rigotti from Benfield Shell for providing donuts and coffee for teacher appreciation.
