Dear Sir or Madam, The TERRA Environmental Research Institute HOSA Team is currently seeking your support so it can enter another successful year of competing and learning about health careers through the HOSA Leadership Conferences. The purpose of the HOSA organization is to develop leadership and technical HOSA skill competencies through a program of motivation, awareness and recognition, which is an integral part of the Health Science Education instructional program. In addition, it lets students exercise knowledge they gain in their school classes for real world applications, gives them experience working one‐on‐one with other health students and professionals to solve scenarios, and teaches them good business and communication skills that are essential to a successful healthcare career. HOSA Students at TERRA achieve this through much dedication and studying on their own time. They meet and prepare for their competitions in many areas including Medical Math, Terminology, Biotechnology, Clinical Nursing and CPR/First Aid. They use their personal time to study and prepare for these competitions. They seek out advice and assistance from local professionals that are willing to teach and engage in the active learning process of these students. Our HOSA team is based at TERRA Environmental Research Institute in Miami as a competitive club in the Biomedical Academy. We entered HOSA in 2010, we assembled a group of forty students to compete in various areas. We were new and oblivious to the wonderful experience that this would be. Of the 40 students in the club, much to our surprise, we had students place in the top three places in the region who went on to represent the region at the State level in Jacksonville, FL. From those students many went on to represent the State of Florida in the National Competition in Orlando, FL in the areas of Biotechnology, Epidemiology and Health Lifestyle. In the last two years we have grown even more successful and last year we had 50 students attend the state competition, the largest school group to represent the South Florida region. Our club this year has reached an alltime high of 150 members. The cost for providing these students the support, books and supplies they need to continue to be successful has skyrocketed. In the past we have managed with minimal parental and teacher support and were able to succeed. Our goal this year is to have even more representation and the State Competition in Orlando, Florida and at the National competition in Anaheim, California. We are asking for your support in whatever form you can give. We will gratefully accept any monetary donations that you are able to give us. The cost of just half of the students being able to participate in the State Competition is $30.000. That is $400 per student to cover the cost of the registration, hotel and food for the 3 day competition. The amount to cover the National Competition is even higher. This amount does not even include the cost of books and materials which is over $10,000 per year for all the students in the club. Just think about what would happen to the modern world if suddenly no one else was interested in becoming a nurse or doctor. Despite the large price tag, HOSA gives back by educating young students about healthcare and medicine and inspiring them to put their skills to use in the real world. Having more students in the HOSA program equates to there being more students who will enjoy studying nursing, medicine and allied health, as well as more students who will just go to college. In addition to enhancing our HOSA experience, our students are currently involved in various projects such as America’s Tooth Fairy – a dental hygiene education program in cooperation with Walmart as well as participating in many healthcare internships at FIU, UM and various healthcare facilities. Please support us to help ensure the existence of future health professionals while giving young people the opportunity to explore a whole new world.
