DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
This position sits in the Centre for Health and Community Services department which encompasses key
programs with in the health, community services and wellbeing sectors. It is an adult learning
environment although students may be school leavers or mature age and come from diverse cultural
backgrounds.
The Centre for Health and Community Services is a large and diverse department providing training for
both pre-service and existing workers from the Community and from Industry. Training can take the
form of qualifications, short courses, industry/workplace training or up-skilling. The department
includes the following key teams and program areas:



Nursing – Enrolled Nurse, Health Sciences
Integrated Health - Pathology, Health Services Assistance, Allied Health, and VETiS
Community Care and Support - Disability Work, Aged Care, Home & Community Care,
Community Services, Youth Work
Child Studies – Children’s Services, Education Support

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE
The incumbent will be required to be involved in the whole of TAFE teaching experience which
includes:
 Teach units relevant to expertise from the Health and Community Services Training Package
including; Certificate III, IV and Diploma of Community Services, Diploma of Community
Development and other related programs. Eg youth work, mental health, AOD

Develop materials and resources appropriate to the needs of students;

Participate in classroom, workplace based and flexible assessment of students;

Supporting students with program content and workplace based training.


Contribute to the evaluation of programs and procedures within the Health and Community
Services area;

Participate in internal and external meetings, planning/networking activities;

Select, enrol and support students in departmental programs as required;

Play an active role in industry liaison and placement arrangement/supervision;

Maintain a pro-active approach to Equal Opportunity issues and Institute policies;

Maintain and monitor classroom and practical learning activities with due regard to the
Institute's commitment to Occupational Health and Safety;

Contribute to and participate in the Institute's quality improvement processes;

Maintain a customer-focused approach towards the achievement of the organisation’s
objectives;

Maintain records appropriate to Australian Quality Training Framework and Institute policies.
REPORTING LINE
This position reports directly to the Assistant Manager and, at department level, to the Manager of
Centre for Health and Community Services.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Train and administer within the educational and/or business activities in the Community
Services area from student recruitment through to graduation;

Teach a range of units across the Centre for Health and Community Services courses, using
effective communication and high level organisational skills to achieve results;

Participate in classroom teaching, delivery of blended and online learning, work-placement
facilitation and flexible assessment of students;

Develop relevant learning materials appropriate to the needs of students;

Be responsive to the needs of students including the positive management of student issues
and model professionalism in an adult training/work setting;

Work collaboratively with team members in the provision and development of quality
education and training-including resource development- for a range of learners;

Apply sound problem solving and innovative thinking skills to meet stakeholder needs;

Apply knowledge of quality management, occupational health and safety and equal
opportunity principles within an educational environment,

Apply well developed computer skills in classroom and administrative contexts;

Maintain a client focused approach towards the achievement of business objectives;

Take an active role developing capabilities through reflective self-assessments, formal
reviews, professional improvement and development processes;

Undertake allocated duties, not specifically mentioned in this document, but within the

KEY COMMUNICATIONS
The role communicates with:
Internal Manager CHCS, Assistant Managers, Teaching staff;
 Existing students;
 Personnel from Student Administration and other departments across the Institute.
External Students and potential students,
 Student placement agencies;
 Community Service Organisations;
 Current and potential business partners, relevant industry and government bodies & key
industry personnel.
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
Qualifications

Bachelor in Social Work, or similar/equivalent

Certificate IV in Assessment and Training (TAE)
Experience



Minimum of 5 years experience in community services/development sector.
Minimum of 3 years experience in teaching/training - preferably in adult learning or TAFE
environment.
Proven capability in effective development and implementation of teaching programs and
material.
DESIRABLE

Considerable demonstrated knowledge of VET and competency based training systems.

Experience with and an understanding of the workforce issues in a range of community
service settings and organisations.

Direct service work in relevant vocation – youth work, community development, youth
work, etc
